@@jayasnhy966 we made bets and supporting actress was the biggest toss up really. But after much thought and discussion we all ended up agreeing on JLC. Because her range in that was so wide, from calm tax agent to whooping drop kicking maniac. All the meanwhile she held the emotional tone and was quite the counter to Michelle. Wakanda forever was unwatchable for me. I tried twice and couldn't get through it. I'm sure Angela Basset was great, but I frankly I hated the movie. Meanwhile I consider EEAAO one of the best movies I have ever seen. As an almost 40 year guy who never cries in movies, I cried in EEAAO. I also laughed and cheered. Nothing has ever been as creative or inventive as that for me. And it's the actors that made it so just as much as the directors and everyone involved. Keep in mind it was made on less than 25 mil and shot in only 38 days. That film is the definition of what movies should bring to the table and it did it fast and with almost no budget. Absolutely best picture and everyone involved deserved to win.

It is incredibly hard to get into the film industry, let alone be successful in it, and to be this successful for as long as Michelle Yeoh has is truly special. It’s a great moment for her, for the Academy, for cinema and for us. Bravo.

I have been a fan of Michelle Yeoh since her role in The Heroic Trio in 1993 when I was 10. I am Cantonese Chinese. Years later, I watched her in Crouching Tiger and I was surprised that she could speak Mandarin. I could not understand her at all so I read the subtitles (Cantonese is not much like Mandarin if you don’t understand both). Years later, I watched Michelle Yeoh in James Bond and I was surprised that she could act in English. It still amazes me that on top of this she can speak Hokkien, Malay, and Tamil. She is even quite good with French. I have always been super impressed with her abilities. I was born here in the US and if I had to act, I can really only do it in English. There is no way I could sound natural with my Cantonese because I don’t think or dream in Cantonese and I rarely use it in life. When I watch Michelle Yeoh in every language, she is completely natural in all of them. That is truly an amazing feat. I remember in EEAAO, she spoke in a few languages in some scenes. When she spoke Cantonese, it sounded like home. I felt like I was with my family. Someone else was saying that Cate Blanchett deserved the Oscar because she learned another language (mind you, I LOVE Cate Blanchett too). I am impressed with that but please don’t let a white person learning another language take away from an Asian person who knows many languages. It’s like when people say how impressed they are with white people who can speak Chinese. Hello. There are so many of us Chinese people who can also speak English. Why aren’t you impressed with us? It’s such a strange double standard. Anyway, I just hope people stop trying to claim that Michelle Yeoh won because the Academy is “woke.” Michelle Yeoh won because she’s amazing at what she does and she finally got to star in a movie that utilized her talent to the max. Most of these awards go to actors in amazing movies. The movie is like the vehicle. Erin Brockovich was a great vehicle for Julia. The Blind Side was a great vehicle for Sandra. EEAAO was a great vehicle for Michelle Yeoh. To the people saying she won because of wokeness: Michelle Yeoh was able to do so many things in her role in EEAAO that neither Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock can do (and I love them too so I’m not biased against them). How is it wokeness when Michelle’s capabilities surpass those of most actors? And no, it’s not just because she can do fight scenes. Tons of actors can do fight scenes. Jackie Chan can do fight scenes. Arnold can do fight scenes. And as much as I love them both, they don’t exactly have the emotional range Michelle Yeoh has. So you can keep your work accusations to yourself.
