- The term hermeneutics comes from the Greek word ἑρμηνεύω (hermēneuō), which means translate or interpret.
Hermeneutics, therefore, is the theory and method of interpreting texts.
Originally used for biblical interpretation, it has been later extended to the interpretation of other written texts, as well as of verbal and non-verbal communication.
Today, hermeneutics is primarily understood as a philosophical discipline which deals with questions of what enables interpretation and understanding.
In this video, we explore what hermeneutics is by examining its history, key philosophers, and main ideas.

Thanks folks. Really didn't imagine that interpreting is such a highly differentiated art. Albeit one could know that it is hard creating a timeless, commonly accepted interpretation for an event or a txt.
Thank you too @farrider3339 for watching! Indeed! Heidegger and Gadamer helped us realize that there is no such thing as a timeless, universal interpretation.
@@languageandideas agree. Me found that by own experience. Say something and be sure u'll be misunderstood.
All we can say as an opener : _please misunderstand me right_ hehe
Hahaha! Now that's funny! 😄
