It's a movie that in a way shows what so much of the 30years war was about. Killing Soliders and civilians. A most primitive time.Barrys music was perfect and Caines performance was so good. Good to see it occasionally.⛪
Wonderfully unforgettable soundtrack. I saw the movie years and years ago and found it also to be unforgettable given the theme of the Thirty Years War and the individual performances by the actors. There has never been another English language film centered around the thirty years war which ran from 1618 to 1648 and involved almost every country in Europe. The siege depicted in the film was the siege of Magdeburg.
The meeting and the relationship between the Captain and Vogel made me think of a kind of "War and Peace" with Pierre Bezukhov and Prince Andrei Volkonski, with mutatis mutandis the same philosophical dimension. Anybody thinking the same?
Am 67 - saw this movie in 70mm on its release at the Leicester Square Theatre in London. It remains just about my favourite historical movie with this great score. The famous film critic, Dilys Powell, wrote: "At last - Mr Caine shows us he can really act!"
Have watched this great movie in Sterling Cinema, Mumbai, India, multiple times in 1975, when I was in college. 70 mm, Dolby sound. One of the best experiences of my life. These modern day multiplexes have destroyed the grandeur of cinema
The lyrics are from Andreas Gryphius (1616-1664), a german poet and contemporary witness of the Thirty Years' War. It's a piece from the poem called "Thränen des Vaterlandes" (Tears Of The Fatherland): Die Türme stehn in Glutt / die Kirch ist umgekehret. Das Rathauß ligt im Grauß / die Starcken sind zerhaun / Die Jungfern sind geschänd’t / und wo wir hin nur schaun Ist Feuer / Pest / und Tod / der Hertz und Geist durchfähret. English Translation: The towers are on fire. The church is cast down. The town hall lies in ruins. The strongest are maimed. The Virgins raped And wherever we look there is fire, plague and death that pierces heart and mind.
I do not mean this as a criticism. I can detect traces of Barry's work on 'Moonraker' and to a lesser degree 'The Black Hole' underneath the choir. Just the kernals of some ideas he would use for the space scenes. I know Jerry Goldsmith's 'The Final Conflict' has been linked with 'The Last Valley'. I wonder if director Graham Baker used Barry's music for a temp track for that film?
Zach Goff - "completely forgettable." Well, it certainly WOULD have been better without those appalling bloody (token?) Americans trying to compete with PROFESSIONALS. Even so, Michael Caine DID say it was his favourite 'Michael Caine movie'. Pity you don't share his sentiments......................

The soundtrack to this woefully underated and forgotten film is the greatest of all John Barry's compositions.
"Out of Africa" is also beautiful, but I agree with you, this piece is epic beauty.

My favourite John Barry score.

If a film deserves re-evaluation and re-release, its "The Last Valley".
Yes

A wonderful and absolutely superb score for a wonderful film, one of the best about the Thirty Years War, if not the best.

La banda sonora, algo fuera de serie. ❤
Roger to that, Roger.A superb film and what a musical score!
And everyone should see the movie. And to think it was shot in 70mm... how spectacular it should have been to see that in a proper theater !
It was photographed in Todd-AO 70mm.
A beautiful, epic, haunting film score...for a movie that's completely forgettable.
YOU'RE completely forgettable. Take that
Zach Goff -
"completely forgettable."
Well, it certainly WOULD have been better without those appalling bloody (token?) Americans trying to compete with PROFESSIONALS.
Even so, Michael Caine DID say it was his favourite 'Michael Caine movie'.
Pity you don't share his sentiments......................
Completely forgettable?! My arse!
Well, I haven't forgotten it.
@@pp312 And neither have I. Excellent score by John Barry. One of his finest.
A Great Theme, but too much like "The Lion In Winter", which I much prefer!
john barry ...merveilleux
What is the English translation of the German lyrics?
The towers are on fire.
The church is cast down.
The town hall lies in ruins.
The strongest are maimed.
The Virgins raped
And wherever we look there is
fire, plague and death
that pierces heart and mind.
Una, gran película. La música, extraordinaria, maravillosa, es... Como de otra, dimensión. ❤
The Worst
