  • DW Travel Guide Lukas Stege shows you the famous suspension railway in Wuppertal, a spectacular landmark in this city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Wuppertal was once the center of the German textile industry. And philosopher Friedrich Engels, known as one of the founders of Marxism, lived here. In the video you’ll find out why the Engels monument is very popular with Chinese tourists.
Lukas’s climbing session in the hilly Bergisches Land region around Wuppertal is a real highlight. In spite of his fear of heights, he tries to climb up Müngstener Brücke, Germany’s highest railway bridge. It’s breathtaking!

Living in Wuppertal, it's kind of crazy to watch this video and see people so stunned about our Schwebebahn. I have used it all my life and it's just an everyday thing to me!

As someone who's scared of heights, it was really nice to see you be so proud of yourself even though you didn't make it to the highest point of the bridge. Well done for giving it a go, you did so well! I am looking forward to visiting Wuppertal (but won't be attempting the bridge!)

I so understand the reaction of Lukas to the bridge. I have taught myself over the years to overcome my own fears, and have done various things that I could not, at the time, believe I'd achieved. Then I went to the coast of Wales... There were two routes back to the car, along the inland path we had already used, or the cliff path. I stupidly thought that I could cope with the cliff path. I walked about 0.5km before I froze in terror. I could not move forward or go back, and as the seconds passed by I felt a scream building up deep inside. My friend eventually held tightly on to me and, with my eyes shut, he guided me to the end of the path...I totally refused to go back, which somehow felt worse than the longer walk forwards, the unknown felt safer than the known!
Well done Lukas for what you achieved. You should be proud of yourself.

Wuppertaler Schwebebahn Germany is the best public transport in the world, there are many green areas like a park, it is very beautiful, paradise and clean and also the German foods are very delicious. That you are very afraid and scared the Müngstener Brücke bridge is the most famous in Germany because you could get dizzy and then fall, you are very careful to protect the security control as a lifeguard.

It used to be quite noisy back in the 80/90, because it was old. But in the 2000s the whole track got replaced piece by piece over a 10 year stretch. In the 2010 new wagons/trains where introduced (build in Valencia). The new engines are super quite, just a whisper. But before that yeah, annoying, metal on metal sounds, especially when the train drove the curves.
