  • Destination Culture: Discover Germany’s oldest castle! Hannah Hummel travels back in time in Albrechtsburg Castle. The site in Meissen used to house Europe’s first porcelain producer. Porcelain designers show Hannah how the material is being further developed today. She also visits the picturesque old town and learns the interesting story behind the Meissner Fummel - a unique pastry, where fragility plays an essential role.

    Oh the confusion with castle (Burg) and castle (Schloss), it took me a second to get that difference. If you want to call it 'oldest' it would have been more understandable if you said palace, chateau, residence or manor house. It is not the oldest castle (Burg) in Germany, however the oldest castle (Schloss) in Germany ;)

      Burg is a castle,,,Schloss is a Palace,,,there is a BIG difference

    • @henningbartels6245

      @@DWTravel a Burg = castle is simular to a fortress and has a military and strategic purpose. In Germany you will easily find a Burg or a Burg ruin which is older than the one in Meißen.
      A Schloss = palace or chateau has a residential and representative character.
      Sometimes there are fluid boundaries and this might be the case in Meißen as well: former castles were remodelled to serve as a residence etc. The period in the 19th century can be particularly tricky, when there was a romantic view towards the Middle ages. It became fashionable to build residences which look like castles or using architectural fearutes of castle. But all there defense features are fake and for pure decoration only: Schloss Wernigerode in the Harz mountains, Schloss Marienburg near Hannover or Neuschwanstein in Bavaria to name a few.
      Anyhow, Albrechsburg is regarded to be the oldest "Schloss" in what is today Germany, but it is not the oldest castle or Burg.

Buy you one of the Herrenhuter Stars, it’s one of the very few authentic souvenirs from Germany, and when you hang up this star in Christmas time you will always remember .

    You got something important wrong here. The Albrechtsburg is not Germany's oldest castle, there are many much older castles in Germany, it was Germany's first palace.
    And that is the special thing about it, because only in the late Middle Ages the rulers and very rich began to built large homes not to be protected and to sit out something like a siege in safety, but to live in a home that is just beautiful, artful and luxurious.

    • @DWTravel
      @DWTravel  Год назад +1

      Now that's a tricky one. In German, there are two meanings for a ‘castle’. One is a "Burg" (a fortress, built for protection) and one is a "Schloss"(a palace with playfull architecture, gardens, etc.) And to make it even more complicated: The differences sometimes blur.. But if we start from this definition above, Albrechtsburg Castle is indeed the oldest German castle (Palace) . 😅😉
