You ask where Nightwish are popular - the quick answer is - worldwide with the exception of of your continent. Whilst there are many fans in the US the band dont fit into the prevailing music scene. They don't do 3 minute songs or use autotune and they are unlikely to get on any radio playlists. Meanwhile they sell out venues throughout east & west Europe, Russia, Japan, Australia & New Zealand, Asia, central America and, especially South America.

The structure of most Nightwish songs is complicated. Songwriter and keyboardplayer Tuomas is a poet and his poetry is not only in the lyrics. It's in the music, the instruments, the voice of Floor (/Tarja/Anette) and the structure. It's also in the visuals on stage, the movements of the musicians, the video's. The ascend/descend Floor did is the metal version of a glissando, going from low to high and back in one breath, something classical singers do for training their voice. Floor is doing this twice a day while brushing her teeth.😀
Massive fan from Melbourne, Australia. They used to come out here regularly, but haven't been for quite some time. I think I've seen them four times. I also ADORE the audience shots. Now do 'Dark Chest of Wonders', the tune they opened the Wacken show with.....
She's 6 foot and 1/25th of an inch, but she wears 4 inch heels on stage so she looks taller than everyone. Marko is 6'1", Tuomas is 6'2 and Emppu is only 5'3" 😁 The second vocalist is Marko, who also sings lead in many of their songs as well as in his own band 'Tarot'. He is known as "The voice of Finland". I'm sure that you'll be hearing more from him. My personal favorite is the bands cover of Pink Floyd's 'High Hopes, where his vocals really shine'. I always like it when a newer reactor hits Romanticide. If they follow the usual order, it's usually their first experience with the bassist/male singer, Marko Hietala, who is a phenomenal singer in his own right. All during the Floor/Marko era Nightwish was graced with two of the most talented singers in their field. Both are extremely talented, though their styles are quite different. And, their harmonies are glorious. The glissando that they both do at the end is a good example. The control that they exhibit is so masterful. Floor usually gets noticed more because of how high she can go, but Marko's breath control is equally as notable as he slides up, then down, then, just at the end, starts going up again to meet Floor coming down, all the while the two are managing to stay in harmony. You'll see much more of Marko as you continue your journey as he has a large role in many of their songs, and takes the lead in some. Probably one of the best examples of Marko's ability is the Nightwish cover of the Pink Floyd song "High Hopes" from the End of an Era DVD. Plus, as a guitarist, you will certainly appreciate the solos that the guitarist, Emppu, performs in that song.

There is much to do ,these days,about LIVE concerts (lot of lipsyncing going on) ,everybody knows Nightwish are using "backing recordings" BUT,these are mainly the symphonic orchestral parts and choirs you hear in the background,it really is massive impressive how this band sounds live and they are all ,very skilled musicians/vocalists and Tuomas the keyboard player.is considdered as one of the great composers of our time. I love Nightwish but You have to know that on the concert of Sabaton in Poland in 2012 were about 600 000 people (Woodstock Festival , now it's Pol&Rock Festival)
NW Army, Western Oregon SoggyFootRot Division my favorite part of the glissando up/down is: - Just as Floor gets near the apex of her gliss-up, the sound-board crew kicks an additional delay that's got about a 350 msec interval, and she is able to match her decent that interval in a way that her echoes are in perfect harmony with herself. Kinda like the classic Brian May guitar part in Brighton Rocks. Kinda/sorta/same idea about playing in harmony with yourself. I've heard a few people say she does a perfect gliss all the way up (no pitch breaks) but there is one (maybe two?) where she gracefully skips an interval or two around her passaggio ... but she does it so well (exiting on pitch on a high-mix, and popping right back in head voice about 2 steps higher, right below the apex...she has her tambre set so well you hardly notice the flip to head voice.. Just amazing, that young lady is. Continue on with the enjoyment. - - Blind Doc Jones, Honorary Nightwish Hydration Team Coxswain, General Dentist, Tooth re-implanter, and mosh pit Search And Rescue diver.
Tuomas saw Metallica perform in the US while he was on holiday before he created Nightwish - so they were an influence! Floor is Dutch so her hair-swinging is called a windmill! (see the Metallica concert in Moscow!? 1.6 MILLION in attendance!) Emppu rocks! He can shred - see and hear "Crownless" by Nightwish!
