- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard launched in 2017 seeking to return the franchise back to its Survival Horror roots and for me I was blown away by it.
Its been 4 years since I last experienced the game, and after playing all these entries back to back does it still have the same shine it used to?
During the course of this review I'll explain what I loved, what I hated and ultimately if it still holds up.

The game that got me into the series. 🙌 Can’t wait for your Village review ❤️
I'm aiming for 2 weeks time, it gives me chance to run it through a few more times and more importantly give people time to play It before I put a big spoiler filled review out
I'm surprised you didn't like the last Jack fight, I just played this game for the first time and I felt like each boss just got better, aside from Eveline which I thought was still a cool set piece. Jack's final form threw me off guard so much because I thought he was actually dead, and when he shows up like that and throws you into the boss area I was like how am I gonna kill this thing? And then the way that you can just mess him up is so satisfying and feels very rewarding after feeling like you're playing defense up to that point. I think mechanically it's just a ton of fun
Anything following Marguerite is going to be a step down as I adore that boss fight so much so that could be part of it 🤔
That perfect summary of RE series. Some people still stupidly claims ohh, you classic fans want cluncy controls or whatever. No, they can't understand RE is exploration, item management, limited resouces, solving mysters but most importantly making choices. That's why backtracking is important part of the RE series, ones you abandon that the game became lineer and lost its mystery and kills making choices. I missed how I'm deciding which path should I choose, which enemy should I spend my resources. That's how RE7 brought that back. I doubt at first when I saw first videos about RE7, I thought Capcom chasing new trend but when I see a complate walkthrought of the game, my doubts removed. It really has the classic feeling. I bought complate edition and it is awesome game.
The game has a really good story, finally a grounded story, you are isolated and trying to survive and solving the mystery. Bakers are amazing, I really loved Jack. He is a great antagonist and actually a victim himself beyond saving (that is the strong part). I agree Marguerite is best boss and really scary. Evelyn is a little disappointing boss I agree that to. Visually and gameplay is simply amazing.
Now for the parts I think they could make it better. The choice part could have handeled better. I sow Mia ending and tried Zoe but it is just identical game. Instead they could make Zoe is the character we control and make the choice more useful. Enemy variant is limited, they could add different enemy types like giant bugs or mutated snake and giant spiders. Ship section is good if they add Zoe playthrough it would be better. Mine section is a little unnecessary, it should left DLC. The game should have ended after ship with final encounter with Evelyn. Instead of mine section they should develop Zoe choice.
Now you didn't mentioned DLC. First is Chris part. I thought same as you, I belived he is an imposter first but they didn't use that idea. His part is okay, especially defeating Lucas is satisfiying. But the real star of the DLC is Joe Baker with End of Zoe campaing. Just beating enemies with bare fist is enjoyable. I haven't played other minigames but these two campaings are really good.
RE7 brought the series to its roots while some parts disappointed me in RE2 Remake, it is still a good game and thanks to RE7 the path opened again (except RE3 Remake which I heard not good thing and I choose to wait until it gets cheaper). Now RE8 looks amazing but I'll wait for complete edition.
Looks like we agree on all of this!
Personally RE3 remake I really enjoyed but I can see it not being to everyone's taste, I'd recommend picking it up - you can probably find it for £15-20 these days. Village (without giving too much away for my review) Is amazing
Man do I love this game. After RE6, I gave up all hope on the series returning to what I loved so much about it. I enjoyed the Revelations games as they gave me the closest experience, huge props to Capcom for doing a COMPLETE 180 and delivering this great game.
Must have taken a lot of courage to look at the high sales numbers of RE6 (despite the mixed reviews), and throw everything out that they had planned for the next installment. I just remember while playing this, thinking "I can't believe THIS is Resident Evil 7". And then to get spoiled next by RE2 Remake! RE7 kicked off the revival of the series it so sorely needed, putting it back on top as the king of survival horror.
Thanks for the video, great stuff!
At least you had revelations to give you a bit of hope! I was drowning in sorrow from operation racoon city for years 🤣
This was my all time favorite RE game until I played and beat RE2 Remake early this year. Among the 3 best games I played in 2017. I started the year with RE7 then Prey 2017 and ended it with The Evil Within 2 ah what a year.
I love thinking back to years which have hit after hit, 2017 was a great year
My favourite RE! Been looking forward to this video :)
I hope you enjoyed it 👍
Yes yes it does in my opinion i’ve been a hardcore fan for 20 years and was so fucking happy to see the direction they were taking the series even though i liked rev 1 and 2 this was looking promising and it was
I wish I'd played rev 1&2 after 6, I wouldn't have checked out for a while if I had
The best VR experience to date.
I'm so jealous! I'll get a PSVR when #2 comes out and finally try RE7 that way
Amazing video, I can't wait to play this after I finish 4
You've got Village straight after which carries on the story from 7 too so you've got a great couple of games to dive into! Hope you have a great time 👍
oh now that the Alan Wake remaster is out you must play and review that
Bro you are funny, and deserve more notice
Thank you, I'm glad you think so. I just piss my wife off 🤣
I like your RE review series, i grew up with this franchise and i mostly agree with your takes.
Have you played the evil within 2?
Thank you I'm glad you're enjoying them 😊
No I havnt, I started the first one a few years back and it didn't vibe with me, I need to revisit them and give it a real shot
I don't blame you for not continuing with evil within 1. It's a very sloppy and punishing experience that feels dated in all the wrong ways.
Part 2 is not like that. It is a much more focused and polished experience. If you do decide to return to the series i would kindly suggest starting with 2.
I don't think you'll regret it. Keep up the good work and i await your village review
Do I need to play the first one to understand what's going on in #2?
If I can force myself through the final parts of RE6 I'm sure I can power through #1 with enough will power 🤣🤣
That's actually tough to say because both games stories are kind of their own thing. They do connect and they do reference the first game in 2 but it's not a requirement.
I don't think 1 is without merit. I like the art design, the shooting mechanics and a few of the bosses. Unfortunately i don't think it's anything other than just ok.
Part 2 was a better game to me almost across the board. Definitely one of the best action survival horror games I've ever played.
My top games
5. RE 8
4. RE Outbreak file 2
3. RE7
2. RE2 remake
1. The best RE game ever is RE1 remake.
Yeah I'm weird. RE4 isn't in my top 5.
Not in mine either 👍
@@SSJdavey nice. Guess I'm not so odd after all. So often I hear people giving masterbatory reviews to RE4 and it sickens me.
I picked up Zoe because was thinking that she is more sane and strong one from these two and that Mia can be picked up later. It was wrong choise.
Oh nooo!!! Someone had to do it, I'm glad you jumped on the grenade for the rest of us 🤣
@@SSJdavey 😆 lol
Tbh I was excited for RE7 as I enjoyed RE6 and I wanted to see Ada and Jake's new journeys after that game. I even thought that the woman on the phone for the demo was Ada LMAO :V
I wasn't that interested in it at first as I thought that it was so disconnected with RE and that there are no legacy RE characters in it (seeing Chris in RE7's ending made me believe that he is an impostor or a clone tbh hahaha) and only this year did I decided to buy it (Gold Ed.) and I Platinum'd it within just a month! :3
I truly love this game now and I hate myself for not giving it a chance from 2017 to 2020~
Your reviews are as brilliant as ever and you deserve much more subs ;---;
Well done on the platinum it can be tough on madhouse!
@@SSJdavey tell me about it! hahaha that damn circular saw was so useless (like 80% of the time) as I needed to first get closer to these aggressive Molded and most of the time I get injured LMAO clearing it without it was just so challenging and clearing the game in Madhouse was such a treat ♥
Also, even having infinite weapons makes me scared of the game in Madhouse and I LOVE IT! looool
I loved my madhouse run too it was terrifying!!!
@@SSJdavey AMEEEN ;^;
This game reminded me of Doom 2004 game and Dead Space 2
What reminds you of those games?
(Both excellent games!)
@@SSJdavey Resident Evil VII because you have to use torch during navigating through the dark, in 1 boss battle, you are allowed to use Chainsaw. And like Deadspace 2, you keep going deep to find the cure and the horrifying creatures come after you from nowhere. RE7, Deadspace 2, Doom 2004 are all good games of their own era.
Fantastic games! Dead space 2 is my favourite from that trilogy hands down
@@SSJdavey mine too as well...best game among the 3
Great review
Thank you!
I hate how some idiots will call ANY first person game an FPS
Its so redundant isn't it. Sure its literally a FPS in how it appears but it's anything but
Chris from RE7 looks like the guy that played Chris on the live scenes in the original RE 1996, not sure if they were going for that, but they look alike. Glad in Village they got back to Chris usual look, but creates a bit of a mess in the continuity.
Didn't like it as much the first go around. But now it's incredibly comfy
What was it that didn't vibe with you on the first go round?
@@SSJdavey just how different the atmosphere was from the noir zombie outbreak vibes
But second go around it's not scary anymore...
God I fucking love this game. The atmosphere is for me the best in the series and I looks amazing, like you said, and I thought the first person view was definitely a good choice. The best resident evil game that isn't really a resident evil game ( if you know what I mean). Nice vid and I think you should check out alien isolation if you haven't already
I do need to play it, it's been on my hit list for years!!
Loved this game.
And my 1st playthrough I did pick Zoe 😏
Did you!
Why!?
@@SSJdavey just because I figured everyone would pick wifey so I was curious about the Zoe ending.
Then I played it again and picked mia 🤣
I picked her on my 2nd run and was gutted when nothing really changed 😪
Though wasn’t my first resident evil, it was my first resident evil that got me sucked in, next to revelations 2
It helps that this game was also a soft reboot
I think that's a great point, 7 is a great jumping on point for the series
It definitely plays like a resident evil game but I personally disliked this game because it has none of the original characters except Chris but he’s so unrecognizable that it barely counts
Much prefer 8 going back 7 feels like a headace doesnt help that there is no replayability reasons unlike 8.
I still havnt replayed 8 since I beat it when it came out, not sure why tbh as the unlockables make it way more replayable than 7, I'm going to revisit it after I playthrough Shadow of rose and see if I want to take on the platinum grind for it
The game's great but not really Resident Evil. With the amount of horror pop culture references in this and Village a fittingly shlocky name would've been like Ethan Must Die (I know it's the name of the one dlc mode but it would've fit the whole game) . They would've benefited a lot by making 7 and 8 their own thing outside of the RE story
The core gameplay is classic RE but I see what you mean with the enemies and the setting.
Its different...but familiar at the same time 🤔
@@SSJdavey Yeah the core is familiar with the item boxes, walking around the house and inventory. But it's the enemy desing, first person (didn't really like), story, handling of bow's in the context and Ethan himself all feel like they don't quite fit Resident Evil. Guess it's too different from earlier titles while being too familiar at the same time. Still one of my favorites in the series but nowhere near the remake trilogy
Granted I've only played through it one and a half times so maybe I'd enjoy it more on a fresh playthrough
@@K1LLeRc0ck It's different but I'd rather play the new ones over code veronica, revelations 1 and 2, and RE 5 and 6.
Hey, why was Resident Evil Village afraid of Resident Evil Biohazard?
Cuz 7 ate 9
I knew a dad joke was coming but I wasn't ready 🤣
Well, this game is good and I really enjoyed it at my first playtrough. But the more I think about the game the less I "love it" and more I "hate it". At first I though it was better than 5 and 6, but after thinking more and reflecting about the game well... it just went downfall. Nowadays in my rank list of re game this game is only above re1(1996), revelations 2 and tied with re0 (between the 12th/13th position in ranking 15 to 1 list), and maybe it can go really bellow more being the 15th in the list someday if I replay it someday. There are many factors that increased my anger to this game. First of all even if the game tried to bring back the horror of the series and the classic gameplays it presents a lot of backseats if you compare to earlier games, I´ll try to be quick on it but some of the bs that the game has.
One of them is the enemies that are pretty dull and a lost oportunity since that the concept was interesting and quite disturbing but they´re just stupid humanoid bullet sponges meatwalls tryng to be a regenerator 3.0, I really can say that the re7 enemies are one of the worse or even the worse enemy design in the entire franchise like omg it´s something that I can´t find a thing to defend on it, they might be scary at first but only for a few minutes after this they´re only annoying, the raskplajantes from re6 had a better and more interesting design than all the molded (even if it wasn´t exactly scary), and to complement a game originaly made for 3ds had such a better enemy design than re7, I´m talking about revelations 1, and the enemy design of revelations 1 it´s still flawed though.
Another thing that is a bs to the franchise it´s the content and post game content that re used to have a huge point on it it´s basically unexistent (even more just buying the basis game), first of all the game is really overpriced due to what it offers the campaing was good but not mindblowing or so impacting though and was really short though, and after finishing the game you basically have to milk a stone if you´re trying to get more compensation from what you paid since there isn´t too much of doing after finishing the game, no mercs mode, extra mode, only a higher difficulty game that has a different experience but only if you have the will for it, allright I finished the game and platinum it on ps4 but it was by the energy of the anger and the will to compensate the price I paid and all the will that I had to play the game and wanting to talk about for a year (since I was could only play it in feb 2018) of the game because if it wasn´t for that I wouldn´t have cared about doing anything more of the game, it´s a game that lacks content and replay factor to me and I just did what I could do for that energy so I wouldn´t need to touch it again. And still about the content there are the dlcs that are ok but the way capcom did put it being paid dlc that should have been free it´s just a spit in the face but I need to talk about it more detaily later because I was talking a lot about the content and replay factor.
Another bs I see in the game is really the backtracking and puzzle design that resident evil used to have, they´re not terrible but osh the going and back isn´t that great and not organic since that so much of the progression isn´t because I find an iten that unlocks certain door or does something it´s more that you progress because you followed the script, there are really some annoying and dull moments of progression of things you have to do and notice in re7 just because it´s scripted, some examples: checking the emblem door locked so the policeman appears and give you the knife, heal yourself in the prologue so that mia gets up and beats you more, checking a lamp doo so that margaret becames a spider take the lamp and conveniently creates a passage to an old cabin where you fight her, hanging lucas´s call so the cop head appears in the fridge so you can check it and afterwards making you able to get the snake key and the list is big. This is a huge sb since that much of the progression in earlier games didn´t rely on scripted events that convienently made you progress (at least not like in re7), that breaks the "openingness" that the game wants to give you and making even more linear games like re5 and re6 more organic and linear than 7 though. And the same that I can say about the puzzles since the majority of the puzzles are shadow puzzles and the puzzles are really few in the game, the only puzzle that was really interesting was the clock one and the birthday but the rest was really meh and not creative, for me the puzzles being good they don´t need to be complicated, just creative, fun, good elaborated and varied, something that re6 did better in puzzles though.
And the last bs I remember in the game was really the history, plot and characters, the history it´s just so confusing and so wtf that you have no idea of what´s going on then. The characters are really bad in the game, compared to other re games, having in re7 one of the worst protragonists in the entire franchise (in re village that´s another history), the characters that are good (jack) are little explored and easly ridded of and it tries to have two different choices that almost result in the same :/. And sorry but this game it´s just a mist of other games without any charm that resident evil has, you just see just a lot of stuff in the game even having cassete tapes in 2017 and many other games and horror movies that lacks personality. This game has just no personality in terms of history and plot, it was really a bs since all of earlier re games had their charm but I dunno it only lacks a lot in re7 though. I just have a theory that when re engine was developed they made the beggining hour demo but they did like the demo and wanted to make a full game arround this demo having a lot of other horro movies and games refferences but they did sundelly put a resident evil tittle in almost the end of the development of the game since the franchise was being 20 years old in 2016 and capcom noticed that umbrella corps would flop.
Well, these are some of the bs I mentioned in the game but there are more flaws in the game though, that some of them are in the bs but others not exactly related. Maybe a reply on this. But overral I think that this game is really one of the most if not the most overrated game in the series maybe one of the most overrated horror games of all time and one of the most overrated 2017 games. But yeah that´s my oppinion about re7. I guess if people didn´t claimed a lot this game, this wasn´t sold as a main re game even more for 60 dollars full price with lacking content and capcom didn´t unconsidered a lot the consumers on the game having an ea cutting content behaviour I would considerer more this game. But overral just a good game that isn´t all of that thing that people claim to be. Sorry, just a resumé of my opinnion that I could go depper someday in an analisis or retrospective (probably in pt br) but yeah. Sometimes just wanted to forget of what this game got me into feeling it. And yeah was a huge text even if I was trying to resume it and not going so much detailed in somethings. But maybe some videos could explain better though;
Theres nothing wrong with having a different opinion on the game so don't worry!
I get where you're coming from with a couple of the points; for me game length is never truly a factor, I enjoy shorter experiences and as long as the content thats there has high production value I don't consider that detrimental to my experience. I don't play the extra modes (generally) anyway so I wasn't missing them but I can understand why you'd be upset by them being absent
@@SSJdavey I mean lenght isnt the main factor of a game either. But.pay 60$ in a game that has cut content by dlcs and its a game that you finisj in a weekend easly and never want to touch again. Its really complicated considering the prices, if it was 40$ or less that would be something more relatable though imo.
Zoe deserved being saved more than Mia. She is the only reason you got the serum in the first place for starters. Also, Mia was the cause of so many people's deaths by being a part of the team responsible for caring for Eveline.
I think you forgot that Mia also is Ethan's wife and the whole reason he came there was to rescue her.
Exactly that 👏
Zoe overreacted so much when choosing Mia like bitch you told me to use the serum on Jack???
🤣
Zoe should have known, its his wife!
What's he gonna do!? she should have tried to reason with him "well she did cut your hand off" she didn't sell herself well enough 🤷
Sadly I just wasn't very impressed by RE7. it felt like a real step backwards in terms of gameplay and I didn't like how scripted everything felt. I'm of the opinion games like Alien Isolation, Resident Evil 2 Remake and even the Evil Within did a far better job at evolving survival horror gameplay. RE7 to me felt like the worst of PSOne style clunky and limited gameplay combined with the worst of modern excessive scripting and handholding.
I havnt played alien isolation (I honestly don't know why as Aliens is my favourite movie of all time...I adore that franchise) I'll need to tick that off the list at some point.
Have you played Village yet? I wonder how you find that compared to 7
@@SSJdavey Sadly I don't think I'll bother with Village as what I've seen of it doesn't appeal to me (watch Under the Mayo's review) and besides I don't currently have hardware that can run it. I think my next horror game will be the System Shock remake if it ever gets released.
Well in 2 weeks my review will be out, see what you think. Who knows it might convince you 🤷♂️
Hated this game
