Dermot Kennedy: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Опубликовано: 5 июн 2024
- Aug. 24, 2018 | Stephen Thompson -- Dermot Kennedy took this assignment seriously. The Dublin singer-songwriter wasn't content with merely re-creating his songs as they sound in the studio, or stripping lavish productions down to simple acoustic arrangements. So he got himself a gospel choir.
More specifically, Kennedy and his band flew in from Ireland a day ahead of time to meet and rehearse with members of Washington, D.C.'s Howard Gospel Choir. Every arrangement was painstakingly plotted ahead of time, so that every note would be perfect.
Two of the songs Kennedy performs here ("Moments Passed" and "An Evening I Will Not Forget") pop up on an EP he released this year with hip-hop producer Mike Dean, and both sound radically different in this performance. They're still forceful - and still centered on the singer's elastic, bombastic voice - but also looser, warmer, more open.
Put simply, they sound like the work of a future star: a modest former busker (and current NPR Slingshot artist) with a voice built to fill stadiums in more ways than one.
Set List
"Moments Passed"
"An Evening I Will Not Forget"
"Glory"

Bro lol music is not the person if that makes sense. 😂 I’m not looking to music looking at the character but just listening. And also what do you want us to do about these people? Music is subjective and with the internet it don’t matter what people think
I love this ❤️🙏💯🌉❤️😍
Everything dermot done was and is perfection .. right from the day he was a little boy .. my boy as a young girl .. he is a beautifull gentleman.. fact on facts . I'm Cheryl Holden and I know truth about this mans younger years .. forever love is real 💚💙💚💙💝

Thanks ❤
5 years later and I still listen to this most days
Amen to this comment. Me too
Every morning here 🙋♂
the woman in the gospel choir staring at him with heart eyes during "an evening i will not forget" is all of us
yes it is!
Unreal. Her gaze at him gave me goosebumps
Didn't know if anyone else would notice 👀
Yes! As if he sings about her life 💚
Yes , she feel it - beautiful moment
Dude doesn’t get half the credit he deserves.
Side note: He should hire both the drummer and backup singers permanently. They killed this
That's his band. Backing singers aren't full time though!
Yeh dude, I just posted a video of the drummer live at Dermots concert
The drummer (Micheal Quinn) and Dermot are friends for a very very long time now.
I fully agree.. This almost sounded pre-recorded and mastered... so on point.
Can’t forget the guys on the pianos
Took approximately 2 seconds to get hooked. That's pretty amazing.
Ethan Shutt same for me
Once he started singing I was hooked. He has such an emotional voice.
Word! Have listened 20+ times since!
I don't know what it is, i mean it's not even what I normal listen to - but I've been listening to this over and over and over
That was impressive! Starting hot!
His voice is so passionate
I love how his accent comes out in this
Yes! It’s so refreshing...and sweet, really.
not fucking wrong brother
Get yourself someone that looks at you the way the choir singer stares at Dermot Kennedy during An Evening I Will Not Forget.
Haha i thought this too
100%
Ikr lol then she daydreamed a lil bit too lol
This is a huge reason I come back to the video; watching all the backup singers react to that song
thats what it looks like when you are around a real song writer. people get hypnotized
Me in this quarantine: laying in my bed watching the ceiling and listening none stop to live performances of every single song dermot has written
Same!
Check out Days Like This. Brilliant
Samara Al Ahmar yeah done! Hahh i watched the late late performacr

what do you mean with something important?
RIGHT!?
@@patrickf8768 i believe he meant this is incredibly inspirational.
Ikr!? My life is trash....
His voice is on the edge of desperate insanity..... Just beautiful
The whole group.Great all around
Desperate insanity - perfect way to describe it.
Desperate Insanity!!! Wow spot on !
He actually almost blew his voice out, since he was self taught he was singing incorrectly and almost caused permanent damage to it.
Brilliant description 👏
Wow! Desperate Insanity. So perfect a description!
An Evening I Will Not Forget just dropkicks me in the heart every single time
Same. Fucking same
I sent this song to a friend this morning because her daughter is a songwriter and I knew she needed to hear this man. Come to find out that friend responds... that her brother picked his gf up from work the other day, and on the way home the car flipped and she did not make it. It gave me chills to hear that she would be passing the song along to him to help heal. I relistened with tears. It brought his music to life, and that's crazy because it was already full of life. Music Heals.
The passion is unreal
@@calebmiears5866 It's for real, it's for real.
He is so amazing live. Ugh. So Good.
That’s my cousin Taylor Nevels in the choir! Sing boy

@Living Well With TJ this was such a nice read till you came along
The distance between him and his mic really speaks to the amount of emotion in this
NPR: Dermot play something to hook the audience as soon as we start filming.
Dermot: Hold my beer.
😝
Right?!??!👍
Yeah. Probably the best start of any NPR Tiny Desk Concert. Bam! The perfect combination of Irish banshee and American Gospel.
👍🏼😀
Darling one, hold on.
These tiny desk concerts remind of this generations version of Mtvs unplugged concerts
But better. More depth
Yeah, except the Unplugged concerts were usually pretty known bands, tiny desks are more for discovering something less popular but unique
They started to bring them back!!! -- Check out Amy Sharks, hers was so good!
the best analogy of NPR I've read!!! Only NPR is better lol...
Yessss
Hands down one of my favorite Tiny Desk Concerts I’ve seen.....I’m floored

Dermot has the perfect mixture of pleasure & pain in his voice. It’s hard to listen to him & not be moved
I love that he sings with his Irish accent and doesn’t change it to fit the mainstream. What a legend!
Who that is Irish do3snt?
I said nearly same to my mum today while listening. They are some great artists from Irland and they sound phenomenal with their accent.
*"feels like december knows me well"*
how can he write a line as good as that I-
Yaassssss
Beautiful metaphor. The december as a representative of the cold, dark period of time, but with its small moments of beauty (christmas, new year) translates to these sad periods we sometimes find ourselves in, yet Dermot tells us that there is always this window of happiness amongst our darkest hours. Also, the december symbolises the end of something old and the beginning of something new. The line works on many levels and is a marvel to listen to.
Can we take a moment to appreciate How BEAUTIFUL ALL THE BACKUP SINGERS ARE THO ! THE SINGER ON GLORY MY GAWD THAT NOTE !!!!!!!
They are amazing 👏
'I found a moment to be brave so I let her know. She said how could I love you back, you who dropped your dreams in the gutter'
My heart breaks hearing this.
"And in my winter she'll be burning slow
Feels like december knows me well"
I've been the "her" in this scenario more than once.
It reminds me of the time the guy i loved dropped me off at the homeless shelter and my whole life unraveled

I've never so quickly fell in love with an artist like I did with him. Since I heard the first note of this show about a year ago I haven't stopped listening to his mind blowing and heart moving music. I owe so much thanks to tiny desk for introducing me to this gem, adding immense pleasure to my ears and soul.
The lyrics on this guy, I can't handle it!
Freaking amazing
Same. In awe
Can't agree more. I heard him in Denver a few years ago on the suggestion of my sister, and I was absolutely blown away. Man is pouring so much emotion into that mic, leaves you shook.
You know any more like him? I love the first song and his verses on other but I like the harder hitting not the more pop influenced songs of his
@@JakeAllen3 I totally agree! There's a part of him that is a pop artist, and that's a part of him I try to appreciate, but I don't love it.
I don't know anyone else like him. He really is so so special!
In case maybe you'd be interested - Aurora has some magical songs! Start from her older stuff maybe.

debatable, there are some really solid TDC's out here. Jorja smith"s one is fire, Mac Miller"s too
@@moosesnWoop she said this is her favorite, not that it’s the best tiny desk.
@@alyssag9700 cool story bro
How many I pick a favorite Tiny desk session?
Can imagine some people finding it hard to listen to this, because his heartfelt singing hurts-you feel his pain. But I am already hurt, so it somehow soothes my soul. Thanks.
He'll heal something inside. Just put him on repeat and feel. Love and light to you.
He sounds so much better live than on an album. After seeing him live.....it’s so hard not to tear up hearing the songs after listening to them in person. I didn’t even wear makeup to the concert because I knew I would be crying like a baby the entire time.
I can relate so much to this! I saw him live a month ago at Alexandra Palace in London and bawled my eyes out for most of the songs. I also feel extremely emotional every single time I listen to his songs post-seeing him live. He's an incredible artist who puts his raw emotions into his songs and performances. I feel blessed for having had the opportunity to experience his live singing
@@wiktorkaro Amen, my Dermot Friend. I saw him the 1st show of the tour in Nashville. The day after Better Days was released. He was so happy to see some of us singing along to his brand new song. He was a bit taken back by it. I hope he never loses his magic and keeps us in his pocket along his emotional music journey with him for a long time.
NPR tiny desk is unmatched at making every great artist sound even more amazing
Truth be told i wasn't going to watch this , but im glad I did.

Cant get enough of Dermot Kennedy! When I listen to him, I think of my little Irish grandmother. She supported me through so many life choices and never judged me. I miss my granny.
Thanks ❤
Blessings to you and your granny.
I'm so late to this. This Guy is a different level for real. He let's his accent hang out and it's refreshing. The drummer is sick!!!
Maybe it’s just me but his music is more impactful in a live setting like this . Natural , raw and gritty .
Mad props to the gospel singers especially to the soprano in "glory". The arrangement was gorgeous and the harmonies were perfectly tuned and balanced also that slide at the end was surprising and perfect. It made we want all the songs of the album to be with this quartet.
🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Dermott struck gold with those backing singers what a amazing combination 👏
The drummer is so smooth
Drummer is too good man
I'm in love with the drummer
FUN FACT IN CASE YOU GUYS WERENT AWARE: He played in a band called Enemies ! ! On the album Valuables. I highly recommend @.@
He also plays with a band called Meltybrains?
He's well tuned in alright, knows his shit.
Michael Quinn such a good drummer definitely one of the best Irish drummers out there
That second song made me tear up, this is seriously really music
His “thank you” after each song 😭😭😭 like he didn’t just sing with my heart in his hands ❤️❤️😭😭😭😭❤️❤️ I love him he’s beyond amazing ❤️❤️😩

okay big man, you win the internet 😂
this man really poured out his soul made me tear up then started smiling like nothing happened i'm shook
Saw him in Montreal this year and im still in awe at his raw voice. Flawless. Band is top tier too.
Average pub musicians in Ireland are seriously talented. Small island, big dreams, bounty of talent, massive achievements.
Guys so many of these Tiny Desks are fine but Dermot absolutely serves this one. I'm so proud of this fellow Irishman.
COLORS and NPR should get married.
Yep! Two best channels in the moment for me right now.
Really like what KEXP is doing too :)
So true... and also Mahogany Sessions, and Sofar
i like all of them for separate reasons, colors for introduction and aesthetics, mahogany for acoustic versions, KEXP for the concert-like performance and the interviews and lastly NPR for its stripped down, and impeccable recording sound
Ok. So I’m late. What are these other channels?
Ireland has such an amazing music and arts scene at the moment. Proud to be irish because of people like the lovely dermot kennedy!

Mad respect to the backup singers, they were amazing and literally didn't break a sweat.
Please don't sleep on this man. I've been following Dermot for some time now and he is truly so incredible. This video doesn't do him justice. By far the best voice of this generation in my opinion. If you haven't listened to his other songs, please do! Your time will not be wasted.

The backing singer watching him sing at 6 mins - "Boy got a VOICE!" :)
The "Backup singers" are front up! Exquisite all together, big juicy sound!
I absolutely love how the incredible backup singers just watch him. Witnessing his magic in awe.
Holy shit, i didn't even take me a stanza to press the like button and know that I'm going to download this
The way the backup singers are looking at him when he sings is everything. I love that these singers were from Howard and were exposed to how far soul music's influence has reached. It upsets me that America is so so shut off from the rest of the talented ppl around the world.
The look on the background singers face” she found the glory in his words” great
So true. I think she helped all of us find the sadness and glory too. 😭
Has anyone noticed how the background singer looks at him during „an evening“. She seems to adore him lots.
Damn the second song. I get chills and then I cry. He has such powerful emotion in his music.
Been obsessed with Dermot for a while now! Hope this helps to give him the exposure to go really big! He deserves it!

Haha! No way. Don't want him selling our arenas just yet. Want to be able to actually see him up close in an intimate setting. He will get there soon enough I'm sure.

Dear God the drummer. You can tell that that’s his life line with the passion in which he plays.
This is one of my favorite performances I've ever watched.
The back-up singer put that high note right through my soul in 'Glory!'
You can tell when someone is in their Dahrma. This man puts himself into the song in his entirety, and it draws those who perform with him into it as well. What a moving experience to listen to him.
Exactly. His light is on full display while he's singing.
So raw so genuine so beautiful correct me if I’m wrong but I feel an Irish folk spirit . 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Dermot Kennedy is amazing. Gospel choir made this video. Drums, piano, keyboards A+++++++.
I'm speechless. Moments passed is so well sang, the backup singers, the drummer everything is just so well made.

The eyes of the choir knowing and feeling his words.
The performance is stunning, on everyone's end. Simply amazing, they nailed it. Also one of the backup singers (the one to the left, with long hair) is absolutely astonishing, what a beautiful face!
Love the choir arrangements. This guy is the real deal. I'm working on his WGBH session right now so it was fun to see this pop up in my feed. That voice! It's hard to translate the power of a voice through a video. Check him out live.
