I've just finished reading your books on your time in prison Shaun and I'm still in shock by some of the things you went through and saw but more importantly I was seriously impressed by your humanity and your ability to rise above the cruelty and inhumanity in American prisons!

At least 5% of prisoners are estimated to be completely innocent and that's on the low end as those numbers come from DNA evidence later exonerating people. Now add on all the people in prison from a cop on a power trip, from the war on drugs possessing a small amount for personal use like a fucking gram of pot, people indiscriminately picked up and jailed for protesting despite the 1st amendment, etc. and you realize we have a really unjust system. Our amendments outlawed slavery, but in the very same sentence states that slavery may be used as a punishment for committing crime. So private prisons were created in order to profit off of the free labor created by inmates. It's no wonder we have by far the highest amount of incarcerated people on the planet; unjust laws, innocent people in jail, and locking people up purely for the sake of profit through slavery. it's a disgusting system.
@Shiv you can’t say that crack dealers and heroin dealers and pcp dealers aren’t scumbags using easily manipulated people and turn them into helpless addicts. It’s wrong and anyone selling that shit needs locking up. The severity of the sentence should depend on the class of drug though I agree
When I first started watching this guy interviewing hard men I just thought he was a journalist. Little did I know his story was more fascinating than most of the people he interviewed!

Hi Shaun, I am slowley working through your videos. I have watched many prison docs and personal accounts of the experience, but none come close to the detail and honesty that you give in these videos. So sad that you had to endure the experience as the punishment does not fit the crime. I am glad you are ok but feel that such a traumatic experience has changed you for the rest of your life, which is something you will never get back. Keep doing what you are doing, you are an inspiration!
You know what... It's not the fight stories, it's not the food, it's not even the stories about the gangs that really tells how hard it is because that is crap you hear on TV but when you talked about the soap and the shower I really actually cringed and for the first time that actually put some perspective on the situation at least for me. It's those details that shows the desperation of the situation.

The Grigeraffe of England wives often incriminate husbands to ensure they get child custody after the divorce. It is quite common. Plenty of innocent men get thrown into jail. Hope it happens to you if you think all men accused are actually guilty.
@@Indusxstan Yep, totally agree. If everyone who is sent to prison was actually guilty, I would not care if they kill each other. But the amount of innocent people in prisons is quite high and getting higher with MeToo insanity.

You mean obvious thinking? Obviously the prison system is not working and is corrupt, hence reinstating my point not to get caught in that cycle. I understand for many people they don't have a choice, as they are born into it criminality and that's all they know. But for the people who actually want to get somewhere in life and not resort to illegitimate means of doing so; Shaun gives a good incentive of why not to take these risks.
I'm from the UK so i cant comment what its like in America, however i'm fully aware that society and the criminal justice system is fucked over there (thank god i don't live there). Everyone brakes the law everyday yes, but there is a big differentiation between doing something illegal such as smoking drugs, downloading music etc, and committing in gang activity and other serious crimes. Thankfully in the UK, the police are able to prioritize what illegal crimes require more attention based on the seriousness of the crimes. Therefore, lesser illegalities such as those mentioned are often ignored or given a warning, we don't waste prison space and taxpayers money to keep people in jail who don't need to be there.
I know mate, it's all about what socio-economic class you're born into and who you know; that predicts what happens in your life in terms of success and criminality,
hope someone you love dearly, if there is such a person, gets unjustly imprisoned on false charges and goes through exactly what this man went through. maybe then itll make its way through your shit thick brain.
I think.. it would be like trapped in a night mare dream that only God can wake me up from..... The horrific sounds and sights u saw has to be a life long journey for you now....Glad u got out of that life phase... alive and still brilliant...

Prisons on the (north) East Coast were created by Quakers, and they have better living conditions in every way imaginable. Someone needs to conduct a serious study on why western and mid-western US prisons are so much more violent than those in the north east.

Here's a story when I was 20 I looked 14; Anyway my 1st prison stint and I didn't wash for 2 weeks because I was so scared. I stunk and I was getting fed up. There were calls for those who want a shower each day (this was Fremantle prison 1985) anyway there is a small shower block in the yard, used by a small elite group. I decided to use it and was standing facing everyone while showering. All of a sudden this guy stood 2foot from me and barked with a scowl: 'ARE YOU RIGHT MATE'. Without thinking (I was scared shitless) I screamed back: 'YEAH I'M FUCKING OK'. He look bewilldered for a sec and said 'oh ok' and walked away. LOL swear to god true story

Yeah, the murders, rapists and other violent offenders, but what about all of those people that have been locked up for a little weed? What about all the innocent people that have been locked up and have been released based on new evidence. Do they deserve it?

Towels leave lint in the skin. Skin mites wrap themselves in the lint on the skin, and cause skin problems, ie skin itching, splotches, lesions, and body odor.

When I got locked up for a week they had single showers each one had a door on it that could lock, that was at the county jail tho I never made it to the actual state pen thank God.
Reading from your book constantly makes one think if its actually true. Try using memory and use the book to reflect on not losing track of your conversation.

But how did you get released in the first place? I've been trying to find it everywhere on the web but it's just impossible to find the answer. You got sentenced for such a long time but got released after a very short time, I can't understand how this is possible

@@faustianluminary4456 Not really, the Prosecutors nearly always stack as many offences as they can and relay the maximum sentence to the offender (200 years) to scare them into taking a plea deal. Very few actually are convicted in a trial, maybe 5 to 8%.

I bought it from Audible as I don’t work for free and don’t expect others to. Just written a review because I absolutely love the book. Read some of the other reviews and they are the opposite of mine. I think Shaun has an excellent narration voice and style. But I’m from the north west of England. The one thing that will make his other books less pleasurable is they are narrated by Americans. Which i have nothing against but with the majority of the English speaking internet community being American. It’s a relief to hear someone speaking in your own accent .
