‪@JakeLoosemore‬ grabbed this from a forum the other day and told me I needed to try it. He was right. Mark Knopfler's main drive pedal for decades - I think? It's really pretty versatile!

Made by Paul Crowther, Auckland NZ, originally they were a cutting-edge distortion pedal in 1978. My band mate Mark Wenski used one for crunch chords in a chorus of a recording for our first commercial single real ease later that year on our pop ballad "Lissa". Mark played a Gibson delux gold top through a Peavy amp to give what co-producer Glynn Tucker called "more punch" for the chorus using the early Hot cake and the sound was more nasal and Grindy than what your recent pedal , but our band "RUSSIA" used other effects on the record. I played the rather pedantic solo using a 1972 Tele thin line through a "Holden" overdrive ( made in Christchurch, NZ) into a Marshall plexi superlead 100, and eventually had Paul Crowther add diode clipping to on of the inputs of my Marshall. Things were a lot more basic back then, the studio was 16 track analog and we took 6 hours to record the A-side and B-side, as well as setting up a basic mix. The following day we had the final mix, and had 200 pressings made, and a couple of months later we were picked up by EMI and the record was re-mastered and officially released. The band fought and imploded only 14 months after being formed, but we had fun for a year and got to use some of the best locally made gear, of which Paul Crowther's Hot cake was pretty well made for 1978!

One of the greatest distortions of all time. Stacks well with just about everything. Sounds INSANE pushing an AC30. So strange how little love it gets these days.

What you’re playing so perfectly digs into the potential of this pedal! Great demo. I love my hot cake, I have one of the newer ones with a couple of mini switches, and I seem to get new sounds from it every time I play through it. Stacks amazingly well with an Boss SD 1 too by the way!

As a dirt pedal junky, I can agree it's one of the best dirt pedals I've tried. It blends with amps very well and stacks nicely. I don't have a vox, but it works outstandingly with my marshall and supro amps. It's a tad expensive, but it's worth it, IMO.

Yip, it's the nicest drive with an AC30. Telecaster. It's also really nice with a Strat too, with a Marshall JTM. Pedal Pawn Fuzz and Crowther Hotcake are my favourite pedals with my Strat into my JTM, as well as with Gretsch & Tele into Vox. I get a lot out of Tumnus, Plumes and BD-2W too. And Hot Tubes too, which to my mind is a little like the Crowther, in that they both sound like an amp set to cook hot, and both arm strong in bass, dirty in the mids, and warm on the highs. The Pedal Pawn Fuzz with the Strat volume down has some of that flavour too.

5:53 the pots are designed to be “stiff”. This is so that once you have found your preferred settings, the pots don’t move, without a noticeable amount of force.
I personally believe that Paul Crowther is a modern day genius. And he’s been building this pedal since the 70’s! Thank god for all of my Kiwi friends, without whom, I might’ve had to wait until these pedals are the next Klon/Analog Man KOT, etc. Which I suspect, won’t be far away, once the Bad Monkey noise has died down.

Had one for years, it does clean boost up to fuzz and everything in between. It’s perfect. The only thing better than one hotcake is two (there is a “double” version) 😉

Great to see this! I've known Paul since early days of Split Enz in NZ and his original Hot Cake was my OD / Distortion of choice from the late 70's until now. Currently using a Double Hot Cake in the studio - it offers 3 distinct combinations in the one box . . . perfect! 😀

I've been a convert ever since Paul Reed Smith made a convincing plea to try one in a recent interview. No other drive pedal format keeps your tone sounding so colorful and alive.

Hey John, Jake bought the pedal from me from thefretboard - it’s an old one from 2006 if I remember correctly, no additional switches like the newer ones and I don’t know if these sound any different from the newer ones. Small world!

The tonal character sounds to me a bit like a ProCo Rat with extra bass rather than shelved off bass. I use a Rat with an EQ behind it boosting back the bass and get these kinds of tones.

It really is! Sold mine, and now that I have a custom ac/matchless style being build, I needed another. I couldn't find one, so a shoutout to GUPtech Donut clone. I'd never heard of the company - apparently pretty small - but the pedal is equally fantastic (not paid or have any connection w/ them, just was genuinely amazed with the pedal from a company I'd previously never heard of)

Just to add to those saying it's perfect with AC30s (what it was designed for) but it's also very versatile & sounds good with all my amps

Hotcake into a Fender DRRI is probably my favorite guitar tone of all time. It's the only model I really wish they'd add to Helix.

This pedal is great as it can go from very light subtle to heavy, I like the sound of it lighter and not too heavy as it has breaks up nicely. This seems like a less in more pedal, I have a cheaper Dumble amp clone I use this way.

Thanks for this-I'd never heard of the Hot Cake, and I love the tone. The schematic has been traced and is easy to find online. Actually, I've seen three quite different schematics. Turns out he's made multiple versions over the years with the same name but different circuitry and different tone. At least one of them has internal switches changing its tone. The 2008 version in particular has a unique circuit that does a kind of bootstrapping, using the output to effect properties of the op amp's input stage. Clever and fascinating. Do you know if this is a 2008 version? Supposedly it's revised circuit produces a less harsh tone than previous versions. -Tom

Ever since your video on low/high cut on a modeler got me thinking. I’m using a line 6 hx effects in 4cm with a h&k gm40 tube head. On the hx I have the fx loop block return at -10db mix at 100% I placed the 10 band eq at the very end of the signal chain. I notice the eq brings the level of the return back up then I can drastically alter the sound of amp coming threw the speaker and d.I box. Have you every tried this?
