  • One of Dan’s fave ODs ever… and a modern take on the same. Sort of…
Welcome to the show and welcome to Effector Du Jour. Short videos, and as to-the-point as That Pedal Show is ever likely to get.
Crowther Audio’s Hot Cake is one of Dan’s fave OD pedals ever. He’s used this one on and off for, ooooh, since before he was born.
Markus Reeves, our good chum from the UK, has had is head in solder fumes again and come up with the Hot Take - see what he did there?!
    Enjoy!

They both sound great Dan...but the Reeves has a floor noise that is very Klon like ..an retains any loose low end a little better that's my two cents...the overall sound was a little more pleasant when using guitars vol. When cleaning up the signal an left the note an string attack in a more open sounding transient way...like a real warmed up amp set to the edge of breakup ...I would go with the Reeves if had the choice but would be ok with the hot cake...

    Hi guys,
    Greets from Canada!
Question for Dan (sorry Mick) and for anyone that can relate.
I have a Morgan Dual 20 and I am wondering how it differs from the old AC30 Normal 12AX7 channel. Would also like to have your opinion about the Normal EF86 channel, and about great drives and fuzzes for each. I actually use a Broadcast as a clean boost, a modded SD-1 as an OD and an OC-44 TB as a fuzz. Should I look for better boxes and if so, what type?
    All best!

Idk, but for me right position of the new pedal is having one part of the top end spectrum slightly lower then the original thing. Like someone took out just one small part of the top range and lowered it down a bit. A bit to much for my personal taste. All of the rest of the spectrum is there and it is not like it is not a great pedal, but real thing is just more open and sounds really really good. Once you put the switch to the left and presence knob to the left difference is way smaller. Then that band of the top end is back in as well. Both pedals have really interesting and very natural and live sounding middle range. Awesome pedal that original.
All that said about this comparation, I have to say that Reeves Electro is making pure art. His pedals are simply amazing. If you have the chance, just take a look inside of his pedals. Pure madness. Like I have said work of art inside and outside and in the sound they can make. So this is not me dissing his products I am actually a great fan. This is just what I hear here.
I do have really good sound card and studio monitors and despite the RUclips compression and such, I get OK presentation of the sound, especially because TPS knows how to capture real "in the room" sound.

I was thinking the stack of AC15, Hotcake, and a treble booster might help me really dial in some late 60s/early 70s tones (Cream era Clapton, Blackmore, Iommi) but maybe I’m wrong
