I have several of Freeman Patterson's books, including "Photography and the Art of Seeing. Freeman used to tour North America and sometimes, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand doing lectures and slide shows. He is a great teacher and communicator. Not sure if he ever toured Britain. I do think the said book is his most important. It was recommended by Kodak in the 1980's for the reasons you mentioned - aethetics, seeing and composition. It took me many years and practice to absorb some of the lessons in that book. It is wonderful that you bring up issues other than Gear! I will keep watching. (PS) Do more of the tag along outings in the forest and streets. It is always interesting (and to me exciting) to see how others approach the day to day subjects in their outings.

Thank you JMR! I do plan to do more walking and talking - it is more fun to produce and hopefully also more fun to watch. If you want to see a master at the walk and talk part, head over to James Popsys' channel - he is both entertaining and I have learned a lot from watching his videos!

First thing I noticed about "the tree" was it's unique shape. If you can somehow isolate the tree from the other trees so the branches don't become confused with other tree branches then you may can capture a satisfactory image. I would walk around and around it until I could either get that result, or just give up on it completely.

Thank you Tony! Was out shooting that little tree once more today, and I did not succeed today either 🙂 - it got a little better though. Thank you for your feedback - much appreciated!

I see that as well Tony, and I am trying to come up with something that would help Frederik?! 🧐 I think it would help if we could be there in person, which is obviously not an option. I have been there many times, and sometimes, we just have to give up on it, as you said. I will watch his video a few more times, at that point, and maybe I will ‘see’ something? Great comment! Peace

I really like the way you explain your topics; very easy to get the point.

I enjoyed Sean Tuckers book and I took notes while reading it. I will pick up a copy of Patterson's book. Thanks.

Who is that handsome rascal in 4K? 😀😬 Video quality looking good Frederik!!!!
At first I was kinda wondering about where you were going, but all of a sudden, it dawned on me. Being a lover of Music, I loved the Guitarist metaphors, and the mention of two Greats in the Music business. I’ve been a fan of Santana for years, and Pink Floyd. But this is about Photography George, so….
I was an avid cyclist back in my younger years, and I joined a local club. It is said One only improves when they are challenged by, and surrounded with others of the same Hobby/ Craft. I think this does apply to Cycling, and quite possibly other facets of Life, but Photography is usually a singular exercise.
RUclips creators are usually out there by themselves, such as ‘Henry Turner,’ and Thomas Heaton.’ So it may help newcomers to join a Camera Club, but I really feel like actual classes, and studying notable Authors such as detailed in a previous video of Frederik’s, are of better help. Some are just natural at it, whilst a lot have to work on their craft. It is like most things in Life. I don’t mean to wax Philosophical here, but the pursuit of anything in Life, will require study, effort, and hard work, if it is worth doing.
I think Photography is a life long pursuit, both in measure of emotion, advancement, commitment, and of learning. There will always be the ‘Know it alls,’ and those who will tear down someone else, and their work. Using Frederik’s illustration, I would say, “Choose Your Critics wisely.”
It is late, and I am rambling, so, I would just say, Get out there and just take pictures! Happy Shooting!

Thank you George! On the subject of a photography club, I have given it consideration and it is probably a very good idea, but something holds me back. I think photography for me is like going for a run - I prefer to be on my own. Not that I mind the company of others, but I just - for that activity - prefer to be on my own. Happy shooting!

Dear Frederik. Hope you're doing well. Just wanted to ask, after 2 years , how are you coming along with the Nikon D4? I see used prices getting better and am considering it.... again. Still have my beloved D700. Do you think it's still worth it, the D4? Where is it really better than D700?
    Thank you in advance!
    Take care!
    Christoph

Hi Christoph! I have written a blog post about the D4 versus the D700 here: frederikboving.com/nikon-d700-vs-nikon-d4/ - but the executive summary is: if you like the D700 and it's quirks (such as 95% viewfinder or the live view implementation) does not bother you, then stay with the D700. And spend the money on better glass. That would be my advice. All the best! /frederik

Shooting the little tree - maybe night time, lit with a softbox?

    • @frederikboving
      @frederikboving  Год назад +1

That is a brilliant idea! The thought of me in the woods in the dark with a large softbox is a bit intimidating, but it just might what I am after to separate that little tree from the rest of the woods! Thank you!

Agree, I wouldn’t do it myself. Just an idea.. A foggy day might be a safer option. Really like your channel. Thank you!

@@nosylens Thank you! I am processing you suggestion and trying to figure out how to get into the woods with a ladder. Not there yet, but work in progress =o
