  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Debarghya Das wanted to help a few friends get their examination results before anyone else but he ended up writing a script that exposed stark anomalies in the grading policies of the Indian education system. He shares his insights from the hack and outlines options to leverage technology for changing education in India.
Debarghya Das is an aspiring computer scientist. Last year, he published a blog post about how he wrote a script that eventually exposed stark anomalies in the grading policies of the Indian education system. Having previously worked at Coursera and Google, he is graduating with a Bachelors and Masters degree in Computer Science from Cornell University. Debarghya is extremely passionate both about using technology for large scale societal benefit as well as solving difficult core Computer Science problems. He does research in Artificial Intelligence at Cornell's Robot Learning Lab, where he worked on helping robots like Baxter and PR2 efficiently navigate themselves in human environments. In addition, Debarghya's research at the Cornell Linguistics Lab led to the creation of the world's first accurate tongue controlled game.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Hey, I am a student (school, Xth grade, just promoted), and what I find wrong is spreading fear among the students. You know how teachers scold us if we are not good at some subject (math or science...) "you won't be able to get into a good college, you won't get a proper job, won't get a good salary, you will not be able to succeed in life"...etc and how our parents scold us when you get low marks (i get scolded EVERY year), basically they are trying to make us study well by adding the element of fear, but that is bad, you can't enjoy learning the subject like that... and well however hard you try, you can never change the Indian education system where a mark's value is considered to be more than a student's mind, his ideas, instead what can be done is instead of scaring us, try to motivate us, tell us benefits of becoming an engineer, tell us the benefits of becoming a doctor, tell us how good our life can be if we get into some good college like IIT, instead of scaring us like how bad will your life be if you don't get into IIT. And most importantly, make us ENJOY studying. Try to make studying fun, bring some creativity in the teaching system, teach us using videos, we are tired of books, bring something that we can enjoy and learn at the same time.

A wonderful speech describing the Indian system and it's flaws. It was also a, pardon my words, an endorsement for online education planting the thought that anyone can learn from anywhere.
However, pragmatic methods and ways which we could apply to rise above our educational system were not outlayed.
Aside from this, an amazing talk. Hats off.

All those who failed in exams or failed in life ... Will find their voices has been raised by someone???
I also found it interesting..... But lemme tell u onething that everyone of us faced but didn't notice is that it's not the education system but the management system that gives us underpaid teachers..... We all want best education in our lives but we don't want to pay our teachers what they deserve.....we pay it to managements and they exploit it in the best possible way. Even u go for the best online classes or the best institutes u will find how they pay their teachers less.
We expect the best out of the teachers..... But forget that it requires lot of hard work to do the boring work of teaching. We think that by merely celebrating teachers day and giving a pen will square his time and effort than we are sadly mistaken. Teachers of new India have everything in their hands.... It's the youth of India that will have to recognise at a young age who is the right and hardcore teacher...... By merely going to a well structured organisation with nice infrastructure and getting involved in lot of activities doesnot mean that u learned everything .......i know it will write a book if said..... Sorry if hurt anyone feelings and yes I m not a teacher but has closely observed the profession. Teachers can do wonders given a chance. And yes selection system also matters.

there should lots of options & flexibility in education , we in India don't get much option we select what we are getting.....
instead of talking about salary package &spreading the bullshit about salary especially parents
...there should be talks of entrepreneurship... & the experience of students i.e learner should like a pioneer...
there are many topics which many people hate because of there past experience , but when learn about these topics on online platform from the best university or teacher in the pure & natural form , you realize that it is very beautiful in its natural & pure form .....
there is no doubt that universe is beautiful in its genuine state .....
but because of the rat race mindset of millions of people ,it just ruins it...
even if you in the race ...you are rat at last , may be the best rat .....
I think open source platform ,online platform. online contribution & community interaction learning on online platform is best ...

It is well known that US colleges base their admissions on things other than SAT scores - for example, race, extra-curricular activities etc. So there your fate is not decided by a disgruntled examiner but by a committee that has maybe a few minutes to evaluate your application. Problems exist everywhere - if this guy wasn;t in Cornell but in Eastern Dakota State University he wouldn't be giving this talk!

Just had one question, If our education system is so awesome, then why do we tend to go do MS or MBA from a foreign university and not do M.Tech(except IISC) or MBA(except IIM A,B,C) from India.
While going through all the comment, just got disgusted by the languages used by "Supposed to be learned people and working for Top Notch IT Firms".

There is a lot of bull-shiting in this. First of all it is not really luck, students can do well if they study, but the teaching methods and the teachers need to be improved. Yes, he can get those online courses offered by the top schools in the world, and even I do attend those online lectures to learn new things, BUT a big BUT that most educated people don't understand because they are educated is THIS: To understand those online materials that he is talking about and to learn richer course materials online, you must first learn English, and Basic Math and what not, - right after birth you just cannot go to the internet and learn those materials and become Einstein or Mozert. You need teachers, class rooms. You definitely need better teachers at early school years fir that. How to motivate teachers to teach well? You need to teach the teachers to teach well. Creativity is important and should be introduced, and for that you need even more and better quality teachers so that they can spend more time teaching and guiding students to be creative. Teachers need to be accountable. And many more. I am still researching on the topic. What are your views? Or what everyone else think can be done. Internet can be used to train teachers to train students. Not directly train students bypassing the teachers.

Here's a real example of the Indian education system:
I studied in a VTU engineering college. Any subject of any branch has 160 marks worth of syllabus. Your semester exam is out of 125 marks (78% of the syllabus). To pass you need a minimum of 50 marks (40% of the syllabus) which most students aim for especially in the really hard subjects. To obtain that minimum 50 marks, you need a minimum 15 internal average plus score a minimum of 35 in the external sem exam. Getting 15/25 internal marks is easy. You can easily cheat or sweet talk your professors. In many colleges they give it to you regardless. And If you look at old question papers, you can predict 5-6 questions that will guarantee you 35/100 marks in the external exam. Therefore, 15/25 + 35/100 = 50/125 Pass !
So an ordinary engineer from VTU scores 35 marks out of 160 marks syllabus (roughly 22% of the syllabus). But he doesn't even know 22% because he scores 35 marks by just memorizing 5 or 6 questions and answers that he predicted, without learning a single thing about the subject.
And to add to this ridiculous system, VTU has bullshit non-engineering subjects like :
      1. Constitution of India and professional ethics
      2. Environment studies
      3. Entrepreneurship and management
At the end of 4 years you know nothing (not even the 22% you think you know) and you're not really an engineer. If anything you're probably just pretty good at spotting patterns.
So, why have a 160 marks syllabus, when you're exam is only 78% of the syllabus and to pass you barely need 22% of the syllabus?

Smells like a lot of pretentious bull. We have great teachers in India and I have personally been inspired by many in my learning years. Every system has problems. For instance, in the US "you" have to write an essay which most people get done by paying someone else. Kids as young as 13 sleep 4 hours in the night. No revolutionary change is required, maybe some evolutionary changes. You are totally wrong when you say that your marks in 12th determines your fate, there are hundreds of colleges and you can do well in life even if you do well from a not-so-good college. "I HACKED INTO THE SYSTEM" pretentious nonsense, sounds like a boastful teenager trying to show off...

He got a full scholarship. He is a Maths Olympiad topper dude (among the top 50 in INMO) and many other stuff. Not everything is about money. These Universities give scholarships to the most talented (by which I mean among the most talented people in the world). I have loads of such friends in MIT and other Ivy league colleges studying for free. For eg- Debaditya Pramanik. He got loads of olympiad gold medals representing India. Gave IITJEE without even preparing after returning from Russia and got AIR 37 in 2017 in which his Chemistry and Maths marks were the highest in India. In Physics, where he has secured the most number of Gold medals respresenting India (literally God level, he has won in Chemisty, Maths and Science too but his Physics was at an altogether different lever) , he faltered a little due to discrepencies in the questions. He received hefty scholarship in MIT and went there. I have many closer friends who are even more talented than him. It's all about talent.
