As a trumpet player myself, im kinda interested in seeing a woodwind muffler now. Mouthpiece and reed installed of course. Might be able to get different notes easier than with a trumpet and its valves.
@@100GTAGUY Adding a proportionately-sized reed to the exhaust side of the engine would absolutely "work". Many small engines actually use reeds to regulate air intake and compression. It's a rapid series of reed open/close vibrations, where a rush of air travels into the cylinder through the reed, which then snaps shut as the piston compresses the air, preventing the air from escaping.
Trouble is, woodwinds restrict airflow even more than that trumpet. You’d also have to make a way to progressively/actively press the reed (as lips do) to pitch it, but even just a couple of rubber bands slid in/out on the mouthpiece might make that work.
Remember the decibel scale is logarithmic not linear. Every 3db on the scale represents a doubling of the power. So even a small difference in the measured number can represent a large difference in actual volume.
You aren't wrong, but it is a bit misleading. 3db IS doubling of power. However, the intensity, which is the sound power per a specific amount of area, is linear. So 20db is 10 times more intense than 10db. But stopping there would also be misleading, as perceived LOUDNESS, is a doubling per every tenfold increase in intensity or, db. So 20 db is TWICE as "loud" as 10db. So +/-10db is ×/÷2 loudness.
we dont perceive it like that. Your statement is true, but we ear it differently. For each 10db step, we increase (or decrease) the perceive volume by two (or half).
Steve's big muffler would have measured quieter than the stock muffler but you have the opening pointed right at the decibel meter versus the stock muffler's exit was pointed more up and away from the meter.
The whole "I want to try my ideas without it being tainted by reality" is how amazing, crazy and unique ideas are made. Keep it up yall this is awesome.
Before I say this, I’m a Matt fan, great dude. Glad we are hearing and seeing more of him!! But when he said “dUde it sounded like a trumpet” he sounded like a trumpet 😂😂
So, you were correct (sort of) in that if you double the sound pressure it's represented as +3dB pressure level. However this is not a doubling of loudness due to the logarithmic properties of the ear's response to sound. For most people with normal hearing, +3dB is just about audibly louder, with around +10dB being a perceived doubling of loudness.
I wish that was true! You’d have to take all the reeds out of a bagpipe to do this with it, so it wouldn’t make any bagpipe noises. Also, the mouthpiece of a bagpipe flows a lot less than a trumpet, but that could at least be bypassed.
All jokes aside, the trumpet at high revs sounds like a vq35/37 from an infinity as the joke goes. However, I think you are on to something with the blue muffler because unequal length headers are a thing, mostly a subaru thing, but they can change the way the flat 4 sounds. So, keep experimenting with the unequal length mufflers.
