In this video, we give you a front row seat into how we built and laid out our camper van. We show you our water system, including pump and fresh and grey water tanks, fridge (which is actually an electric cooler), electrical system (including water pump, USB charging ports, an inverter, two 100 amp hour AGM batteries, which take abuse better than lithium ones do, a diesel furnace that we run on kerosene, lighting, and breaker and switch panel), custom DIY cabinets, rock-n-roll bed built from extruded aluminum with custom upholstery, and insulation/window coverings that give us both stealth and help retain heat in the winter or keep the heat out in the summer.
Set in the beautiful Bow Valley, near Banff, Alberta, Canada, we park along the Icefields Parkway to give you a detailed tour of our van. We show you the interior from many different angles, and also give a quick tour of the custom roof rack we put on the micro camper van. This van is based on the Toyota Previa platform, which is a 4 wheel drive, mid-engine van that is factory supercharged.
Amenities include:
~17,000 BTU Chinese Diesel Furnace (running on Kerosene)
~1200W RMS 110VAC Inverter
~2 Sinks and 1 GPM On-demand Water Pump
~40L 12VDC Mobicool Fridge
~Two 12VDC 100Ah Deep Cycle AGM RV Batteries charged by the factory 80 amp alternator (it's literally 24 years old!)
~110VAC - 14.5VDC 10A Smart Battery Charger
~Rock-n-Roll bed that allows van to seat 6 and sleep 5-6
~Roof-Top Tent
~Custom Roof Rack with 2 large locking Pelican Boxes for storage
~Custom cabinetry with 4 locking drawers and oodles of storage space

FINALLY...someone who understands the importance of 2 sinks...a kitchen sink AND a separate bathroom 🚻 one for hygiene!....KUDOS ....you can always empty the kitchen basin into the bathroom sink when you can't dump it outside. 😊👍👌👏
EXACTLY! 9 times out of 10 we can take the big one outside! The little one is more than enough the rest of the time!
The most impressive thing is how clean the work is. The cabinets look better than any apartment I've ever lived in. Haha

I really love how you make full used of every inch in this minivan. The design is well thought out and comfy to use. The only problem is the toilet i think ? Can you show us where is the heater ?
Yes, toilet is the only think I didn't have room for. I do have a small one that folds up and sits under the backseat, but only use it when I'm in really remote places. I also have a video coming up on the heater specifically!

Since you have several kids have you ever thought about converting a small pull trailer converted into a toy hauler / camper addition for greater flexibility and options. This would allow for use during different weather seasons with greater ease and comfort with families sizes of more than one or two.

@@pamm2230 yes, we have considered options like that, or like a bus, but the fuel mileage changes considerably with a trailer. It also makes it harder to find parking in urban areas or crammed parking lots at trailheads. It would definitely open up some living space, but I'm not sure we want to trade the mobility benefits of our small van.

We have large propane bottles at home and we refill our small propane bottles outside because there’s always some leakage in the refilling process. Much more economical.
Yes, I bought the fitting but haven't actually refilled one yet! It looks WAY cheaper.

Good work, I'm converting my '98 Windstar, but I had to tear out the old carpeting and put in hardwood flooring in back.
We considered keeping the carpet but eventually went with the smooth floor in case something was spilled.

Just got a previa to convert and am so happy i found this video. I have wanted to do the old vw camper van layout like you did but don't seem to have a lot of examples to go off. My comment was going to be about how do you check the oil now and it was answered right at the end, well done. Really love the sink behind the pax seat, that isn't something I had considered or seen. You know, if you got the right bedroll, the firmness of that bed would actually do wonders for my back! Other than that, this build is much better than others I've seen. And to do that up north, you gotta have it together to not die in the cold. Bravo!

Great layout. Suggestion for the storage door area. Make the door openings stop higher, then have the lower door area be a drop down opening. This allows for having bedding on the bed and being able to open and have access to the storage areas when in the seating mode. Having the ability to rearrange how the storage area inside is configured is also a great option for the type of trip or storage needed for different times or seasons.
Yes, we've considered making changes to that part. Right now we have never had a moment when it has caused a problem, but raising it an inch would make it easier to use.
