    my favourite part of this game was the characters. from the weapons dealer who sleeps with an anime body pillow every night and looks like every moderator stereotype put together to the chef who, in the process of looking about as unfunny as possible, is one of the funniest characters relying on just his animations alone. There's also the manager guy who looks like he draws biceps on with a sharpie so he feels good about flexing to himself, but he doesn't really have much impact on the rest of the game...

    The irony is that MINTROCKET, the Korean studio that made this game, is currently owned by Nexon. That is the Japanese corporation that also owns MapleStory and proudly claims to have introduced microtransactions to the western market. Yahtzee's Picture of Dorian Gray comparison is more accurate than he realized...

    • @catkaboodle
      @catkaboodle Год назад

      But before anyone thinks MINTROCKET is a bunch of corporate stooges, this is the design philosophy on their website:
      "There are hundreds of things to consider when creating a game.
      However, the single most important thing is the fun.
      We boldy put aside the old conventions once considered the standards of success, and decided to stick tenaciously to focusing on the 'fun' of a game.
      We believe the answer lies within the heart of gamers who just enjoy games."
      So if they have the opportunity to pull resources from a corporation willing to indulge devs that want to make an actual game instead of a soulless gacha machine, then I say go for it. This situation doesn't happen very often (but hopefully it will become more common in the future).

    I think Dave the Diver is a pretty good game. It's got a lot going on sure but plenty of it is optional, and I find the fishing itself pretty satisfying. It's definitely a game you can play for a little while to have some fun, and I can't wait to see what else they'll add in the future.

It's just fun and charming and simple enough that I don't have to concentrate 100% on it while I give most of my attention to my son and his plans for ocean exploration and lore crafting on the game.

    Dave the diver feels like whenever the developers felt like they had an idea what to add to the game, they just did, and never cut anything down.
    The "standard" gameplay is engaging enough to not get boring, and after the first few intermissions, I was looking forward to seeing what else the game was suddenly going to throw at me.

      Its still an Idie developer even if they are under a larger publisher, indie is more about size and scope than anything.
      The game itself was developed by a 29 person team which constitute a larger indie company but still well within what's classed as indie, and that including all venues inside and outside the game compared to the AAA scene that often breaks the thousand of people in their credits.

      you have AAA ( like elden ring ) A/AA aka big studio but not endless budget, Pillars of eternity, solasta and a number of big games but there are still areas short of development.
      Then you get Indie which is usually small to 30-40 ish teams and they often utilize graphics options and other means to ease their burden. Dave the diver, dead cells , hades ( art is nice but it is 2d portraits )etc list is VERY LONG
      Under that is trash games which are essentially shovelware put together by glue like bad rats, or prebought asset games.

    I think Horace actually makes for good contrast. Going by the trailer and information given here, the experience and presentation seem less Recettear and more Yakuza/Like a Dragon (strikingly so with things like the rhythm game, everything with fish and diving, and even the work simulation gameplay loop) in the sense that there is a whole lot to offer here. Lots of Yakuza 0 minigames are well-liked with the mountains of stuff to do. It's not a bloated baby, but a baby with diverse taste.

    Not sure if folks realize this, but Dave the Diver is actually a sneaky AAA game masquerading as an indie.
    It was made by a developer with 7,000 employees and a billion dollars of yearly revenue. It’s an excellent game regardless, but it’s worth keeping in mind when we defend it as an indie.

    • @Pineappolis
      @Pineappolis 4 месяца назад +1

      It's a very good point - and easy to miss because the publisher does work with a smorgasbord of genuine small indie teams _and_ a tonne of subsidiaries of itself, often with names that don't make the connection clear. Ultimately, though, it was priced like an indie game and, while I've not played it, certainly doesn't sound from anything I've heard to have been meddled into homogeneity by the publisher (it sounds _way_ too insane for that).
      It looks like a duck and quacks duck so, while it's not a duck, it's kind of close enough.
      I guess the one serious issue its masquerading could have created is drawing in most of the already-limited attention indie games get and causing a few genuine gems that needed to be successful to keep their creators in game design at all to flop but... erm... hopefully not?

    I thought that this would be important information to share, given the somewhat fish-related nature of this video. 35% of all ocean microplastics come from clothing/textiles, mostly polyester, but also acrylic and nylon as well. This is largely due to clothes made of these materials being washed, which causes these clothes to quickly erode, with the microplastic fibers entering the water system, and eventually, the sea, where they often end up consumed by fish. These microplastics can in turn end up inside us when we eat these fish. Ocean Hero is a great search engine that we can use to help clean up larger plastics before they disintegrate into microplastics.

    I want a game that's a cross between this and Dredge - fish up weird mutant cthulhu-fish and serve eldritch dishes to my Cultist clientele. The better your dishes, the more powerful the Cult becomes, and the more powerful Lovecraftian elder god they are able to summon. Stronger gods corrupt more of the ocean, which gives you more areas to explore and weirder fish to catch. Repeat until you end the world.

    The ONLY complaint I have is how many different things there is to do. As soon as I got the phone in game and saw all those apps I was like “ah I wonder how this will be”
    After like 30hr I was like “there’s MORE???”
    It’s a game with so much passion with EVERY aspect they put into it that can feel exhausting but I’m still playing. So I can’t tag on it too much. Every time I enhance a meal I still watch the whole animation cuz it’s so Fcking funny/so much effort
