For the benefit of those who didn't see the Post-ZP stream, the game's developer Paul Helman joined us on the Twitch chat for a bit but then mysteriously disappeared after about an hour or so, which just so happened to be around the time the game's problems arose and people stopped praising and started criticising it. I did feel a bit bad after he vanished and I really hope we didn't destroy his self-esteem because it was quite an interesting game; it just had quite a few glaring issues namely too many cutscenes, unfocused story & gameplay and glitches. Personally I got a modern-day George Lucas vibe from Mr. Helman; he has good ideas he just needs someone else to give him notes and encourage him to take stuff out that doesn't work.
Crazelord91 I hope so. Tbf I can’t see patches changing the story but hopefully it’ll take out the glitches. I mean the stream abruptly ended cuz Yahtzee encountered a glitch that prevented him from going any further.
What that tells me is somebody didn’t want to hear criticism. Either because he/she is a rampant egotist who only wants praise as is the case with a lot of indie devs. Or if he’s been working on it for so long he doesn’t want to touch it, either from burnout or knowing that he’s just gonna cram more stuff in there.
This video was actually quite the lesson in game design. I legitimately hope Mr Paul Helman sees it and is able to use its criticism towards making a more focused sequel, cause that would be an excellent game I'm sure

@@badmanjones179 Up until now he's been using variably elaborate metaphors to explain just how annoyed he gets, so this is a subversion of expectations
Dear Paul Helman, I too am working on a creative project that has taken years to build up, and an added difficulty that I have is that I want to include multiple parts that happen at the same time but in other places so they influence each other and yet are different. Even though some people have found problems with Horace, you know know what those problems are, and can now remaster it. If you streamline it and remove the ill-fitting parts, then people will get what they loved about the original and know that it's less flawed. Plus, remasters always attract a lot of new customers.

So this is the indy version of Too Human? Awesome story and initially incredible, but the longer you play the more the gameplay wears you down to your bones?
Indy version because it's a passion project the creator wasn't willing to cut things out of: yes. Indy version because it starts great and gets bad later: no. I wouldn't say this game is difficult but more that it's tricky (especially the bosses), you definitely need to get used to the game and play by it's rules. Minigames are fun but some are too difficult in my opinion. I broke my controller trying to complete one minigame that required me to smash both shoulder buttons like crazy. So yeah. Music is mostly fun and I like the use of classic music infused with 8-bit. Does it feel like too much? Yes, first time playing I was blown away how much it lasted. But I was thankful for it. Having played this game earlier this year... I actually liked it. A lot. An often challenging platformer... but the story was actually so compelling and sweet. Not to mention quite... relevant, in this day and age.
At first, I thought this was going to be a revival of the old 1980s Horace games for the ZX Spectrum, especially with its pixel aesthetic. Though this game is certainly an improvement from "Pac-Man clone with a weird blue face with legs."
What did you expect to see from a random indie game off steam? Perfectly rendered Hanging Gardens of Babylon? The Sydney Opera House, Perhaps? Herds of Wildebeest sweeping majestically-
I have recommendation for you: Wizard 101, which I recommend to you purely because its a MMORPG in which its combat is not "click on the thing until the thing dies" and I want to see how you find it.
I don't find ultra-difficult platforming at all entertaining. If I'm invested enough in the game, I'll power through it so I can continue/complete the story, but I will hate the designer every second of the way, and feel no sense of accomplishment, but only deep, bitter resentment.
Since I'm seeing people throwing recommendations around here like hats into the ring, I'll make one as well. In a couple weeks when it comes out, how about giving "River City Girls" a try? 2D Beat 'Em Up developed by Wayforward and a new entry in the long running Kunio-Kun series that flips it around where instead of the masculine, Yakuza-to-be, high school punks beating rival gangs to rescue their kidnapped girlfriends, you play AS the girlfriends of said high school punks who set out to pummel their way through any and all challengers in a quest to rescue their boyfriends. If you enjoy any games where you can pick up a bench, bicycle, or anything not nailed to the floor and then slam it into a mob of pompadour wearing neer-do-wells, (and I know you do given your Yakuza reviews), then you might get a kick out of this. It comes out on September 5th and something worth considering.
I wonder how Yahtzee would respond to The Friends Of Ringo Ishikawa. It seems like it could be something he loves for being quiet and self reflective or utterly boring with zero direction- both of which are true but I loved it

Thank God it's Yahtzee time again!
Tried to watch the other guy Bob and had to stop before I cut my veins open with a paperclip.
At first, I thought this was going to be a revival of the old 1980s Horace games for the ZX Spectrum, especially with its pixel aesthetic. Though this game is certainly an improvement from "Pac-Man clone with a weird blue face with legs."
I fucking died when you threw up old Thatcher on the screen
To be fair steam has more gems in it then most gaming places for the PC
Only problem is you hath go on And find them
6 months later and I still have one question.
Just what the hell is Horace anyway?
a robot
This is like his Duke Nukem forever review!
Jack Doyle The real one?
It IS 16 gigs good lord
that was quite the way to begin a review
What did you expect to see from a random indie game off steam? Perfectly rendered Hanging Gardens of Babylon? The Sydney Opera House, Perhaps? Herds of Wildebeest sweeping majestically-
Isn't it obvious?
I have recommendation for you: Wizard 101, which I recommend to you purely because its a MMORPG in which its combat is not "click on the thing until the thing dies" and I want to see how you find it.
That's not the Eiger on that picture, it's the freaking Matterhorn!
I don't find ultra-difficult platforming at all entertaining. If I'm invested enough in the game, I'll power through it so I can continue/complete the story, but I will hate the designer every second of the way, and feel no sense of accomplishment, but only deep, bitter resentment.
It's amazing how yahtzee always finds decent indie games from the shit
I came here expecting a skiing classic! Though I have to admit I was pacified (slightly) with a Dizzy shaped egghead.
3:57 Oh hi Sideswipe!
I wonder how Yahtzee would respond to The Friends Of Ringo Ishikawa. It seems like it could be something he loves for being quiet and self reflective or utterly boring with zero direction- both of which are true but I loved it
Working on the site from morning to night
That's living alright.
