its funny, because during one of their hype trailers I commented underneath. I hope this game is good, but it looks like it’s going to be a buggy mess and they deleted my comment. I think they knew.
The funny thing is that it ISN'T rebalanced for multiplayer. The biggest complaint I've heard/seen is that every friend group is just one person clapping cheeks while everyone else desperately looks for enemies.
The montage of Dunkey struggling to keep up with his friend repeating “Fluppy, can I play now? Can I play the game now? I’d like to play the game I spent money on now, Fluppy” is the funniest shit I’ve ever seen from a co-op story game
You know, hearing Yahtzee talk about this, it's clear that there was potential in this project. It obviously was set up well in the beginning, and vampires having human minions to do the grunt work has been used on and off again since Bram Stoker's Dracula. Hell, even the idea of having to switch which weapons you're using between killing humans and vampires is an interesting idea, though a stake launcher is going to wreck a human's day pretty bad, but maybe if they'd made the human focused weapons do minimal damage to vamps or let the vamps regenerate anything except "Anti-Vampire" whereas the vamp weapons should mostly work on people but be harder to use and/or refill ammo. That could have had some interesting game play, but instead we got something so easy that a game reviewer who has to finish within a week cranked up the difficulty just to feel SOMETHING. I hope that most of this concept-drop the multiplayer-can be revisited by someone who gives a shot, because this could have been a really good way to make players feel like a modern Van Helsing.
Arkane - Vampires take over an island and you get stuck on it and then… zzz That was the potential before they fell asleep at the wheel, drove off a cliff, landed on a fuel dump… and then got ate by a shark. This is a game that should still be cancelled and blamed on work experience kids.
A stake launcher might be good against humans and vampires alike, but that can be solved by lowering it's fire rate and range. Burn it on a human and his friends have plenty of time to counter.
That's a big problem fighting vampires in most media. they seem to make them a hyperbolically more of a threat than they are. Yeah sure a stake will knock one down, but the real problem is they get up eventually. Killing a Vampire is a bit more involved and the only surefire way is to cut off the head. The Bram Stoker novel even the say(it does not happen....funny that).
5:36 now that you mention it, the final boss boils down to “interact with three things and push the win button”, so if that’s a boss, it ain’t much of a doozy…

I think Arcane is hitting the same problems lots of developers go through. The talent got poached, or moved on once their creative visions were realised and they didn't retain any of the talent that produced their big hits.
They're different studios, and this is Arkane Austin's first game so I'm not sure how closely involved the original talent was for this game, hopefully not a lot lol.
Most of Arkane's staff is still intact. There has only been like 3 key people who have left the studio. The creative directors for this game were the creative directors/leads for Deus Ex 1 and 2, Dishonored 1 + DLCs, Dishonored 2 and Prey + DLCs. The art director was the lead level architect from Prey. Many of the level designers are also from the Deus Ex and Bioshock teams and have been working on Arkane projects since Dishonored. I think Arkane Austin will be back in shape for their next game as this project seems to be Bethesda's "let's make multiplayer" project. First was Wolfenstein Youngblood, then Fallout 76 and now, Redfall.
@@AmbientView3000 This is Arkane Austin's third game (second if you are only counting solo involvement). Dishonored 1 was made by both Austin and Lyon, it's DLCs were made in the Austin Branch. Then they worked on Prey'17 + DLCs which was a solo production of only the Austin team working on it.
I disagree. Honestly I think their recent batch of mid is an attempt to recoup costs. Dishonored and Prey are acclaimed games, but not very commercially successful. So Deathloop and this are attempts to retain their flavor of shooter while being commercial and they aren’t working that well.
I never cared about Dishonored in the first place (and Prey 2017 didn't feel like it had much staying power or character) so I didn't have any stakes with Arkane. Then I saw what a nothingburger Deathloop was and immediately chucked them in the "marketers, not game designers" category. This pretty much confirms that.

Fun fact, the multiplayer for Redfall only gives the host story progression, mraning even the "intended" 4 player experience wasn't designed correctly.
Loving the slight difference between subtitles and spoken-word content there. The Subtitle Person In-Charge clearly had grievances to air, and I for one feel you, Subtitle Person.
When Redfall was announced and I realised Arkane were the developers, I was soooo freaking excited. Then I played it and some how got syphilis from the wet fart.
I guarantee you this was a project that Austin was working on in the margins of all the other games they have been working on; like this was never meant to be a game, it just sort of happened, where the side-work reached critical mass, then they said, "Hey, can we put the finishing touches on this thing?" they got told "no" and then it was taken and sold as a finished product.
I used to watch Yahtzee over 10 years ago, im surprised he is still at it and holy hell nothings changed! Remember when he got into a fight with Pure Pwnage? Crazy
The clearest and simplest answer to the problem with Redfall is that they hired Colin Robinson as Game Director Which means that this game was actually an overwhelming success... for Colin Robinson
1:24 it’s sad because while no recent games have done so, borderlands 2 did it epically. More enemies and elites show up and enemies get slightly tougher, but not spongy enough to detract from the experience. It is that… conceptually… easy. Now I’m not sure how mechanically hard it is but considering they had AAA at their backs, Arkane shouldn’t have had any difficulty doing that!
Then it must not only be optimized for multiplayer but also for cloud gaming, because the enemies were plentiful and frustratingly competent, when I played this on my last-gen console. The world seemed empty, until I tried to *go* anywhere, there were squads of five or six guys on every path and vampires would pop out of nowhere when I aggroed them, and then I couldn't get a shot in with three or four vampires blinking about, enough to make me think my game was crashing.
My guess is that there was a different game that was actually being made and some monkey in a suit scrapped it and demanded Arkane make something to fill a slot in the release window in 10 months using what they had from the scrapped project.
I will admit, I am surprised. I have spent this whole time assuming they were gonna do the whole "we are like No Man's sky! Just give us a bit of time" but from what I have seen this is it. They haven't released a statement "Yeah we know it's not what we wanted, but just wait". It has been radio silence. I really think they are done, this was somehow supposed to be awesome. It's funny to go back and watch them stream the game and pretend to be all hyped about someone obviously boring and stupid. For transparency I don't think "we will fix it later" is an acceptable thing, I just figured it was the new norm in this day and age.
@@Revalopod When you load Wolfenstein Youngblood, Arkane Studios' logo appears right after Bethesda's and MachineGame's. MG's senior game designer Andreas Öjerfors said "When it comes to level design, Arkane has shown us the way, how to do it. We have learned a ton from Arkane in this."

Mr Expressionless jumpscare
Given what I've seen of Redfall, this review honestly felt generous.
That my mum joke took me outta this world😂
Loved the Stake Driver as a sprite for a gun in the video lmao
That may have been the best pun one of these has ever ended on.
Happy birthday to the best video game critic in these dreadful times!
As the only game reviewer I watch you are never late on a review for me.
You got past the first jump in cup head. That makes you more skilled then most game reviewers.
1:08 Deep rock galactic is the singular example of a game that did “four player coop shooter that’s just as good when played solo” actually well
"You know who else can sustain that amount of hatred for that long?"
Fun fact, the multiplayer for Redfall only gives the host story progression, mraning even the "intended" 4 player experience wasn't designed correctly.
Mums can indeed hold grudges. I think that’s how Mummy’s are made.
Great Stuff, as always.
Love your books yathzee !
Whew I thought I was the only one.
The line about murdering baby seals in a car crusher was fucking amazing.
Had to pause until I stopped laughing at that one
“First impressions were good”
Well of course they were, Yahtzee was on a boat.
Wow, he went pretty gentle on Redfall. If it was me I'd have been a lot harsher. He didn't even point out the myriad bugs and glitches.
The game wasn't amde by Arkane France, it was made by Arkane Austin and probably co developed with devs from the French studio.

"... Should I leave?"
Oh no, just stay and listen... you'll want to be next in line!
Yahtzee never loses his spark. Feels just as vintage as when I first started watching him.
I swear, the entire idea for this game must have just spawned from “wooden stake as a bayonet"
I used to watch Yahtzee over 10 years ago, im surprised he is still at it and holy hell nothings changed! Remember when he got into a fight with Pure Pwnage? Crazy
Existentially Challenged is my favorite book of Yahtzee's I've read by far. So good.
The clearest and simplest answer to the problem with Redfall is that they hired Colin Robinson as Game Director
Which means that this game was actually an overwhelming success... for Colin Robinson
I think we all felt a gear shift in Yatzee's voice after the awkward Redfall dinner scene lol
Man. I so look forward to him doing Gollum. I know Yahtz' isn't, but I sure am.
2:21 Complaining, that headshots are deadly to humans? Really? Would you rather whittle down an hp bar?
I'll add it to the bucket list
Count Dooku: I've been looking forward to this...
Yahtzee: you can’t have a game that is just as good single player as 4 player co op or vice versa
Deep rock Galactic: allow us to introduce ourself
When a game tanks, you know the ZP is gonna be brutal
“Never once been true” someone’s never played deep rock galactic
Haha just realised the captions are different from the audio and have different jokes. 0:57
"or the one who can jump quite high" bro leave Luigi alone 😂
My guess is that there was a different game that was actually being made and some monkey in a suit scrapped it and demanded Arkane make something to fill a slot in the release window in 10 months using what they had from the scrapped project.
Softback purchased 🙂 I highly recommend Yahtzee's books for anyone who likes Yahtzee & Sci-Fi or fantasy!
Thought for sure the video would make a Redwall reference. Oh well, still an enjoyable review to watch.
You say that there is now co-op cage that works Singleplayer but I believe Barony achieves just that
I will admit, I am surprised.
Saints' Row, Cyberpunk 2077 and now Redfall, the amount of games coming out that feel like they were created in cynical bad faith is really odd.
oh Arkane did Prey2016? That was such a good game, how did they fall so hard?
This review is way more entertaining then the actual game I refunded mine in 30 min
When you're going for 'Salem's Lot and end up with 'Salem's less.
I'm imagining Yahtzee and his Chihuahua having a moment over food he should really take from the lil blender
Dishonored > Prey > Youngblood > Redfall. Such a sad linear decline for Arkane.
Arkane had nothing to do with Youngblood. Maybe you meant deathloop
@@dlxmarks oh i forgor
We've definitely got a contender for a game on this year's Top 5 Blandest/Worst
Look at that, two Early Access game reviews in a row.
3:30 you mean “OnlyVamps”?
Anybody here played that in Multiplayer? If so, how was it compared to what Yahtzee said.
So Yahtzee last spoke to his mum in 2011?
saw existentially challenged in waterstones a few weeks ago, I wanted to grab it but given it was a sequel I figured I should pick up the first one which they did not have. This reminded me to go order it, so cheers!
Didn't Prey come out in 2017?
oh, so this is not a redguard + daggerfall remaster
I've been looking forward to this since Cold Take mentioned "but I'll let the big guy tell you all about that"
Thanks
God I love Prey (2016).
Can't wait to see what the good devs are up to this time around...
Oh
Yahtzee, is the book available as one of those posters that looks like a drawing of the author or a character but is actually just the text of the entire novel, it's the only way i read nowadays :)
