Brian Wilson was a singer and songwriter for the Beach Boys. He had an interesting life.

And maybe my favorite composer, especially when it comes to progressive pop, for lack of a better label.

A few years ago I saw Brian Wilson live and he actually covered this song with his own arrangement and tweaking the lyrics a bit to talk about pianos instead of guitars because he's mainly a pianist. It was awesome.

Watch the Brian Wilson biopic 'Love and Mercy' to understand what they are refering to. Great film

Lovers in a Dangerous Time is a Bruce Cockburn song. BNL covered it.

Thanks for the reaction to an absolute banger by BNL. Brian Wilson is one of my favorite musicians/composers ever. He was the leader/producer/genius/ and often lead singer of The Classic Beach Boys, especially on falsetto stuff (eg “Don’t Worry Baby”, “Caroline No”, “Please Let Me Wonder). He was producing their music from about 18 years old. He is still alive and has been leading his own ensemble for over 20 years now. He pushed the Boys into more “progressive” areas, starting in about 1965, and PET SOUNDS was his brainchild. And then wanted to go further with SMiLE (sic), but other forces, including his cousin and other lead singer in The Boys prevailed in stopping that. It was finally released by Brian’s band and then a sessions album from the original Boys after a 50 year gestation period.
The BNL are very influenced by Brian’s music and sensibility.
BTW, there’s a short version of this song done live by Brian and his band which is on the Live at the Roxy album from about 25 years ago. It is heart-breaking and usually as an intro to Brian’s “Til I Die”, which first appeared on THE BEACH BOYS 1970 album SURF’S UP.
The chorus lyrics and some of the others refer to a time when Brian Wilson was addicted to lots of drugs, and weighed 300 lbs and mostly just laid in bed. And stopped producing much. For about 10 years or more. The story is both sad and ultimately happy and is told real well artistically in the great movie “portrait” of Brian, LOVE & MERCY, with both Paul Dano and John Cusack playing Brian at different phases in his life.
    Thanks again

Brian WIlson was the creative genius from the Beach Boys. He had an emotional breakdown and for 3 years he was under the control of a doctor ( Dr. Landy is mentioned in the song). Landy kept him completely isolated from everyone and entirely dependent on him. When Wilson wanted to record again, Dr. Landy even controlled the recording sessions. In a later interview with Rolling Stone, Wilson talked about how he rarely got out of bed over a multiyear period. He had sand brought in to surround the piano in his living room. Basically, he was a prisoner in his own home.
As other have said, check out the movie "Love and Mercy" which is a biopic of Brian WIlson and it dedicates a large portion of the film to his time with Dr. Landy and how he eventually broke away. John Cusak does a good job of portraying Brian Wilson.

2:19 Smile was The Beach Boys album that was never completed. Brian Wilson released Smile in 2004, but was not The Beach Boys work in progress album of the same name.

The live version is way better. They have a video for that one. Normally o wouldn’t suggest that but it’s the first I heard in ‘97 in Detroit, and is the best

Brian Wilson is considered a musical genius. He's also seriously mentally ill. Spent a lot of time in his bedroom. He's still alive but needs a guardian.
