If you didn’t know, the album was written while Graffin was going through a divorce and the album reflects that. It’s a downer of an album but I love it. Absolutely a 180 from bad religion stylistically. Cease might be a better track to check out next time. They did it with Bad Religion as well, but this version the album is killer. Cold As The Clay was his second solo album and it’s a full on folk album. If you’re familiar with Uncle Tupelo or the like, it’ll make more sense. Great choice, I still have the CD for this somewhere

I'm 40 now. Propagandhi and countless other 90s punk bands are a very important part of my youth. And Propagandhi is the one band I keep returning too, long after even the big ones like Bad Religion, NoFx, Lagwagon etc. have become kinda boring (though Lagwagon has a special place too because of the amazing drumming!). Propagandhi are hands down the best punk band ever.

That’s hilarious that you brought up Atreyu because that is IMMEDIATELY what I thought of when I heard this. I loved Atreyu in middle school-junior high. I listened to their first three albums a lot, and they followed a pretty similar path to this band: they started out kinda melodic gothy metal and I thought they were awesome at the time. I don’t know if I’d still like it today, but they had some cool stuff that you can tell they put some love into. Especially the first two albums. Their third album was okay, but looking back you can kinda see they were testing the waters for their future sound. When their fourth album dropped though and it sounded like this song here, I was like “what the fuck is this garbage.” And I was 14 or 15 at the time, my music tastes were shitty and I had little room to judge. But I still thought that album was generic as fuck and not like their old stuff at all. That’s exactly what this reminded me of. The most shameless and soulless path of selling out imaginable imo: pandering to the Monster Energy Drink crowd. Awful.

I loved the vocal style of Terry Hall but I can see how it might jar to those unfamiliar with it. One thing I liked about the Two-Tone genre was how the singers sang in their own accents. The wellspring of this musical scene in the 80s was working class and the vocal style really reflected that. There are so many other great groups from this scene whose music has stood the test of time but The Specials were exactly that - Special.
