This story is in Bob's autobiography. It's a great read and wonderful as an audio book with Bob narrating. Bob is truly a national treasure in England.
Yes I read Bob’s autobiography last year and it is great read but a little sad at times, like a lot of comedians he has had setbacks and dark periods in his life. Most of his stories on the show he does describe in his book. I am sad one of these days even Bob is going to run out of true bizarre and funny stories.
I come from Middlesbrough where Bob is from. I can confirm that the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette did indeed have two reporters working for them named Ron Waffle & John Caramel.
Yep, 'Standard Fireworks' is the brand name since late Victorian times, I remember those TV adverts too. Not sure they didn't go under (financially) a few decades ago ?
More Bob please, his life is just so hilarious. I think David says in one of the shows that if “anybody else had told this story we wouldn’t be giving it a moment’s attention, but somehow from Bob….” 😂
Bob is legendary ! Nobody tells it like Bob ??? It's a great show in it's own right but Bob Takes it to another level. Can I also suggest you look at the same show with Kevin Bridges who tell a story about when he " accidentally bought a horse " ??????? it's unbelievably hilarious.
You’ve been Mortimered! Bob is a legend on this show and he drives David Mitchell (the guy with the beard) crazy with his tales. He’s so good at fabricating side stories alongside the truth, as a distraction and the names he gives to people in his stories are off the wall. The back and forth is constant. ❤
From memory, back in 'those days' - the 60s & 70s, when fireworks were readily available in 'selection boxes' of various sizes, the major brands were indeed 'Standard' & 'Astra'.
I think you should react to Kevin Bridges on WILTY where he claims he accidentally bought a horse. It’s one of the funniest clips ever from the show. You will be in stitches watching this program, it’s that good. Best wishes from 🏴
You'll get a lot more requests for Bob on WILTY. I'd suggest using the Mortimerian Tales compilation video and work through the clips in that, as they are in chronological order of appearance and some rounds have major spoilers for previous rounds. This clip is his first appearance so you started in the right place. Also, despite what people will try to tell you, if a card is a True then the reader is not allowed to lie about the story. They can use pseudonyms and say things that are obviously a joke but attempts to mislead with untruth during a True round are not permitted.

If nobody else has mentioned I will, "Kevin Bridges, I once bought a horse", you've no idea the hole you've opened with Bob, and indeed, this show, you're gonna love it.
"Standard" were the big name in fireworks when I was a kid. Their TV Adds had the sung line - "Please do remember the 5th of November, Light up the sky with Standard fireworks"
Bob Mortimer, Henning Wehn, James Acaster, Claudia Winkleman, Kevin Bridges.... the list goes on and all are pure gold. Please do a LOT more WILTY, because we'll be right there with you!
Lol, great reaction thank you. Bob Mortimer is a comedy genius and has been in many shows, WILTY, Task Master, plus his own tv shows with Vic Reeves. In WILTY Bob has the best stories by far and the names of people in his stories are legendary (real and made up!). If you watch more WILTY, it is a real rabbithole. James Acaster also has some great WILTY stories and is deffo one to watch as well as Bob.....More, more, more please. 8-)

Would I Lie to You is a great show. My favorite panelist is Henning Wehn. His stories are wild. Rhod Gilbert deserves an honorable mention as well. The way he bounces off David Mitchell is hilarious.
Great reaction, guys. Many of the panellists have unbelievable stories, but very few are good at ad-libbing an untrue story. Bob is probably the best at both truth or lie. There are some other panellists who have had one or two great stories. The funniest one ever is "I once bought a horse" by Kevin Bridges. The story had me literally crying with laughter. It's definitely worth a watch. You can tell the clips worth watching simply by the number of views the video has had.

Bob is exactly right. In most cases of house fires, it’s the water from the firehoses that causes the majority of the damage. A fire confined to one or two rooms can end up with water getting through walls and floors, saturating joists and plaster in places that didn’t even have fire in. And the soak more than you’d think they need, in order to prevent the spread of fire.
The names have been changed (always) by Bob to protect their identities, clearly the replacement names are thought up in a jiffy and from the mind of a genius comedian with a quick mind lol Great stuff, thank you guys!
I wonder if that's where the phrase " Bury your head in the sand" comes from. Its when your head is on fire from a lightning strike and you run headfirst into a pile of sand😂😂
OMG you've finally got round to Bob Mortimer. Brilliant. My favourite ones are 'I can tear an apple in half with my bare hands', 'Chris Rea cracked an egg in my bath' and 'I do my own dentistry'. I think you'll find all of them in the Mortimerados compilations. ❤️
Bob is a legend , his stories are amazing . Also standard was the actual brand name of the fireworks, bought them all the time as a kid, and back then everything was flammable in your home, unlike now .
I remember well being taken to the paper shop for standard fireworks. They even sold them loose! We never had much money so my Dad would let me pick so many loose ones. We had a large garden so we had the bonfire, the neighbours would come over and fetch their fireworks. Mum made hotpot and treacle toffee so the night was great.
They're allowed to embellish a little and lie about names, so Bob famously always uses the craziest names, he's famous for his creative on the spot name creating.
Nonsense. Most of the names he uses are actually real. When they're not, he makes it clear and uses truly absurd names such as Broccoli Highkicks and Barbara Lighthouse.
Love Bob. My mum was head nurse on a children's casualty ward, and she hated bonfire night. No leave was allowed, and they always got at least one child who was blinded or otherwise maimed, every year. Firework safety has become more of a thing in the last half century, but I can totally believe a corner shop selling fireworks to a 7-year-old back then. Which is partly why the common phrase "it's health and safety gone mad" makes my laugh...
Yeah, I remember buying cigarettes for my dad at one point, which would absolutely not have been legal but it was just nothing a local corner shop cared about. Oh god, also using the cigarette vending machine in the police station at some New Year event! Lack of cameras and surveillance aside, I think nothing shows how lax people were about it than the existence of those vending machines lol. Plus I think everything about this story can be explained by the fact that at almost all points in it, he's a 7 year old holding a burning soon-to-be-exploding box of fireworks. I've seen in kids and remember in myself that moment where you're overwhelmed, stop dead and start looking for an adult because you have no idea how to react (the "mum told me not to go out" is SO telling, I definitely remember moments where "the rules" have directly stopped me from getting away with things), and I think the fact he didn't make any effort to talk about that is what makes it seem so unreal. But it was probably pretty traumatic and something of a blackout, filled in by later assumptions... and now it's just a funny story
There are many great stories on this show by many great contestants but Bob is the best by far and he was on the show multiple times and you really need to watch all the episodes he is in. Ps, the press may well have turned up, but whether the names were really Caramel and Waffle are up for debate. He always introduces strange names in his stories whether they are true or false.
Good that you're reacting to these, this video's a fine starting place. I would just warn you though, don't react to the "dentistry" video until you've seen a number of his other stories first as it has a lot of spoilers in it.
