Basically, it's about a teenage twerking girl almost getting hooked up with a violent drunk who warns her mother to go away or get bitch-slapped if not... Somehow they end up doing nasty stuff with an Xbox in the 1930s.
She didnt almost get hooked up. The guy was banging her as the mother of the girl is singing hyms. After that as the mother gets angry, and makes Ieva cry the guy says to her that she will never give up Ieva as hes threatening the old hag. Song in nutshell (I did research) Child runs away with boyfriend when mother not looking then mother finds out screams at child then boyfriend threatens the mother and says let us live our lives and let leva be my sweetheart (What they said were in a nutshell too)
I just realized that the time signature changes several times throughout the song. It goes between 2/2 (cut time) to 4/4 with a couple bars of 8/4 (at the slower part towards the end.) Neat!
Thanks for sharing this. While the translation seems a bit... off, it seems to be mostly accurate (from what little other translations there have been and that I have seen, i don't actually speak Finnish). Why is it so impossible to find a video of this song with english subtitles? It seems next to impossible to find, so thanks so much for uploading! I'm guessing that part about the girls being "wet" is supposed to mean they were sweaty, not... er... you know.
The girl wants a threesome with an Xbox and a boy, and the mother wants that not to happen. Also the song was written in like, 1700, so many people were definitely having drunk threesomes with an Xbox and another human being
The lyrics weirdly enough leave un-menthioned that the song is speaking about how everyone had their HEAD wet. HEAD wet from dancing (SWEATING from their SKALP due to the large abount/or the intenssity of the dancing). The original text has the word head (Pää) in it while the translation somehow missed it even thoug it is so short phrace. It just means to show that they were hard at work at dancing. it has nothing to do with sexual stuff. Thease lyrics are just taken from some translation webpage and then just copy-pasted to a video format. I hate this kind of translating (the webpage), the kind of where the richness of the original language and it's multiple tiny details are sacrificed so that one can just put a extremely coarce "rally english" translation to place. One that, by it's nature, changes some of the lines to get a "plain language" translation. Like translating "You are wellcome to my Sorcerer Kingdom!" to "Welcome to place of darkness!".
@@theweirdwolf1877 also ievan polkka was written a few century's before the xbox was even a thought in its creators mind ievan polkka is at least 300 years old but the oldest written version of it has evidence that it could be far far older than that. one of the reasons its not sung in other languages is because its notes and words are precisely tuned to old finnish it also doesn't help that language isn't always 1 to 1 translatable between any 2 languages. the worst cases of translation is when a word in 1 language translates to two very separate and very different words. other issues come in when some languages order of speech is different. all things considered this translation is 7/10 quality it atleast gives you a rough idea of what is going on there are no inherent sexual themes to the song however the latter half just strait up says hes going to woo her and the bit about fooling around is implied innuendo. the song is about a love at first sight story. simple and strait forward.
There is no translation, it's just gibberish. Learn the sounds if you need to perform it lol. (Also, this translation isn't the best. It gives the basic idea, but some parts were translated either with google translate or super literally, like "Everyone was wet" should be more like "Everyone was sweaty" lol)
It's scat (gibberish), just 'jamming along'. Partly taken from jazz also - the 2nd half of it is 'jazzish'. Only, the stanzas end in a few meaningful words, but it doesn't really matter. I hope they would just write the scat too. Finnish spelling is so sound based, you could learn it by looking and listening. PS. You'll find the full lyrics by writing to your search: 'Ievan polkka lyrics'. That version doesn't have a translation. But you have it here, in this video. Only the scat is missing, left untranslated.
Hold up. You're telling me, that the part of this song that made it internet famous and brought to meme culture, was improvised gibberish??? Like, that's the ONLY lyrics used in the Hatsune Miku version. And it's just scatting in a non-existent language. I need to lay down.
Seal Sixfour hold your horses, I speak more than 10 languages and I'm an autist. I will take this upon myself and translate this wonder for the world. Do not despair. If only I had seen this sooner I could've saved...
Seal Sixfour Yeah, the Hatsune Miku is using the scat part. There are a few meaningful words in the end of the stanzas, that's the traditional Finnish scatting. Like the instruments do when improvizing, take the themes from the melody, here the singer takes the sounds of the real words, and improvizes with them. That's also what Loituma did by the support singers, they repeated certain syllables, imitating instruments to support the lead singer. But to be good with it, you were supposed to end your scatting in meaningful words smoothly slipping them in after 'the gibberish', as if 'accidentally stumbling back to the song'. For example, one of the scats ends in 'Kurikan kukka ja kirikan kuu'. Kurikka is a county in Western Finland (The song is sung in an Eastern Finnish dialect), kukka means flower, so the 'flower of Kurikka'. It's symbolic like 'the Yellow Rose of Texas'. Maybe people of the time knew this kinda girl, famous around her home county, or province, or the whole country. Now we don't know :) Fleating is the earthly fame. The 2nd part 'kirikan kuu' has kirikka -> kirikan (genitive form, as is Kurikan from Kurikka) - that is just gibberish to rhyme with Kurikan, but then they go back to the real language, kuu = moon.
English translation is epic 😅😂🤣 First time, youtube recommendation made my day 👍🏼😅 ...... especially, wet virgins, “woo” and “giving it all to Xbox” were hilarious 🤣🤣
*From what I've found by repliers, actually from Finland, in the comment section, the translation to this is wrong and inaccurate, many claiming it was translated with Google translate. Please spread the message*
Lol I don't know why but I find this translation very deep and joyful. A burning youth compassion ready to make mistakes not listening to old folks. It has both lessons and regret.
wanna make some parts clearer, kinda bad translation as this song isnt half as kinky as one would wish lmao "Ieva was smiling, the fiddle it was wailing - as virgins were corded round to wish her luck" more like simply; "Ieva was smiling when people were expressing their congratulations". No virgins mentioned in the actual song. *None* No 'neitsyt' or even 'neito' can be heard in song. Ieva (aka Eeva, btw) apparently had party going. Most likely Bday or rippijuhla aka. 'party of coming to 'age'/christian confession party.... ooor well, its christian party which tends to be throws for 15 yers old christians "All of them wet" is more like "All of them crying". This part literally translated is "Everybody had wet head" They were happy tears as the guests got pretty emotional
Me descovering this song: "Oh its an obnoxious japaneise song" "Its actualy finnish?" "Its a beautifull finnish folksong" "Its not actualy a folk song" "Its still beautifull thought, i bet it has a beautifull meaning" "Its the original catchy rave song"
Look up IEVAN POLKKA - The whole song with Loituma's Hanni! for a much better idea. It's the lady who sings it in Loituma doing a tutorial and the video description explains the song in english.

So the part I want to know the meaning the most 1:34 does not even have a meaning? That's a pretty messed up plot twist, now I have to live for the rest of my life with this empty feeling.....
WTF I LEARNED THE FIRST MINUTE OF THE SONG IN 5 HOURS!!!!! I'M LITERALLY JAMMING IT. it feels so good. tip : focus on the pronunciation only and break the syllables.
What's odd to me is the fact that we play the same instrument on weddings in Kashmir in India and Bilal Goregan was playing it at a park wedding in Finland
The last lyrics in this song, I thought 💭 they were actual words in Finnish language but I have notice that they were just humming sounds!!! Hey, I wonder if to learn Finnish would be hard, because I have learned two languages in my lifetime, English and Spanish and I have found that the Finnish language it’s pretty interesting!!!
Actually to me this song is not dirty. It's a song about being a rebel in a society that tries to confine you into a box that's not natural. What however is natural, is the box of life. It's much better than waging wars and taking drugs to replace the void id est punani.

I just realized that the time signature changes several times throughout the song. It goes between 2/2 (cut time) to 4/4 with a couple bars of 8/4 (at the slower part towards the end.) Neat!
Finnish friend: Now you can sing along
Me: Pol pol pol pol pol pol
Then sing the english translation
1:04 That low disk space sound tho
IKR LMAOOO
@@flohwalzer once you hear it you can’t unhear it
I like how this is the best translation video of this song out there.
As a finnish person who didn't know that the original ievan polkka was finnish I am very stunned right now-
2:44 15 seconds of silence for those who still couldn’t understand
make it 60
Why ? Whats that mean ?
Thanks for sharing this. While the translation seems a bit... off, it seems to be mostly accurate (from what little other translations there have been and that I have seen, i don't actually speak Finnish). Why is it so impossible to find a video of this song with english subtitles? It seems next to impossible to find, so thanks so much for uploading! I'm guessing that part about the girls being "wet" is supposed to mean they were sweaty, not... er... you know.
It’s definitely wrong, because I’m pretty sure no one would screw their xbox
@@theweirdwolf1877 Objectum people:
@@theweirdwolf1877 also ievan polkka was written a few century's before the xbox was even a thought in its creators mind
ievan polkka is at least 300 years old but the oldest written version of it has evidence that it could be far far older than that.
one of the reasons its not sung in other languages is because its notes and words are precisely tuned to old finnish
it also doesn't help that language isn't always 1 to 1 translatable between any 2 languages. the worst cases of translation is when a word in 1 language translates to two very separate and very different words.
other issues come in when some languages order of speech is different.
all things considered this translation is 7/10 quality it atleast gives you a rough idea of what is going on
there are no inherent sexual themes to the song
however the latter half just strait up says hes going to woo her and the bit about fooling around is implied innuendo.
the song is about a love at first sight story. simple and strait forward.
“All sides of the xbox”
This is google translate %100.
0:30 Im sorry... what? 😂
bad translation, like really bad translation
They had sweated a lot from dancing
This comment made me crack up lmafo
this is 100% google translate... song was writtin in 1920-30s and there is xbox in the lyrics??? nice joke
Coming up real soon, a full translation with every part translated!
Ah shit, it's really difficult, but mark my word, Imma do it
0:46 ok that’s really messed up
This is a weird translation imo. Im from Finland and I always thought the song was about dancing. I could just be too innocent though.
@Väiski Yeah, this translation is super inaccurate.
it’s google translate stupid what do u expect

Wise words !
I need translation for 0:55 to 1:48 as well :D Thanks once again mate, maybe I'll learn to sing it in English too :D
What did the poor xbox do to him tho
Salivili part to the screen too! And the interlude scat - 0:58-1:48.
You don't have to translate it. but make a sing along

*what happened... to.. my.....*
*EYES*
Lol I don't know why but I find this translation very deep and joyful. A burning youth compassion ready to make mistakes not listening to old folks. It has both lessons and regret.
What does the lyrics mean? Is it inappropriate?
Where is the translation for the guy who sings: "pol pol pol pol [...] pol pol pol [...] e oi e oi e oi eoi e oi e oi e oi [...]"
It’s just acapella, that ain’t words
Was there a xbox 100yrs ago?
hmmm.. My history teacher never taught me about that.
I now want Snoop Dogg cripwalking to this after reading the translation.
wanna make some parts clearer, kinda bad translation as this song isnt half as kinky as one would wish lmao
"Ieva was smiling, the fiddle it was wailing - as virgins were corded round to wish her luck" more like simply; "Ieva was smiling when people were expressing their congratulations". No virgins mentioned in the actual song. *None* No 'neitsyt' or even 'neito' can be heard in song. Ieva (aka Eeva, btw) apparently had party going. Most likely Bday or rippijuhla aka. 'party of coming to 'age'/christian confession party.... ooor well, its christian party which tends to be throws for 15 yers old christians
"All of them wet" is more like "All of them crying". This part literally translated is "Everybody had wet head" They were happy tears as the guests got pretty emotional
Me descovering this song:
"Oh its an obnoxious japaneise song"
"Its actualy finnish?"
"Its a beautifull finnish folksong"
"Its not actualy a folk song"
"Its still beautifull thought, i bet it has a beautifull meaning"
"Its the original catchy rave song"
Yeah that's why I liked it because I like folk songs
The folk song about old folks not wanting their daughters to have a drunk threesome with an Xbox and a boy.
Because people did that in the 1700s
_what did he do to the xbox now_
äppyt tipput hillijallen is the best part
Look up IEVAN POLKKA - The whole song with Loituma's Hanni! for a much better idea. It's the lady who sings it in Loituma doing a tutorial and the video description explains the song in english.
I need to learn singing this as part of Finnish learning
After 2 years of wondering what this song is about, I now finally know
I understand Miku's version better than the English subtitles.

This translation is so bad and funny at the same time
is this a Hatsune Miku version cuz
I HATE IT WHY IS THERE NO NORMAL VERSION LIKE THE ONE WITH THE VIBING CAT
I feel the same
Im estonian and i can understand this without the translation
There is a xbox in it?
At 0:58 that's called 'Skatting' put it in parentheses as the subs for that part.
When you hear the song and are a malayali and realize that this song is just a lot of malayali slurs
It's actually really old finnish
So the part I want to know the meaning the most 1:34 does not even have a meaning? That's a pretty messed up plot twist, now I have to live for the rest of my life with this empty feeling.....
Oh know I see -.-
WTF I LEARNED THE FIRST MINUTE OF THE SONG IN 5 HOURS!!!!! I'M LITERALLY JAMMING IT. it feels so good. tip : focus on the pronunciation only and break the syllables.
I tried to sing along but ALL I did was summon a demon.
I still can’t sing it
90% of Finnish people can't either
So don't worry
I am afraid modern people just cannot fathom the concept of an xbox a hundred years ago. I mean, you know what it might have meant, right? The sacred.

ah .. now i hate the song
The last lyrics in this song, I thought 💭 they were actual words in Finnish language but I have notice that they were just humming sounds!!! Hey, I wonder if to learn Finnish would be hard, because I have learned two languages in my lifetime, English and Spanish and I have found that the Finnish language it’s pretty interesting!!!
omg this song is terrible and dirty
queenrose night why bother commenting? If you don't like it watch something else
Some people like terrible and dirty things
Actually to me this song is not dirty. It's a song about being a rebel in a society that tries to confine you into a box that's not natural. What however is natural, is the box of life. It's much better than waging wars and taking drugs to replace the void id est punani.
Wow
queenrose night Yup
So do I understand well that great part of the lyrics is just some gibberish? I seriously thought it's all finnish.
