I was researching this; I am both american and fan of this song. I was Listening to a Song called 'My life is a party' by ItaloBrothers, which samples the song heavily. Now I had first assumed it was a modified translation(it's not, in case you were curious, but rather heavily inspired by Dragostea din tei). This was the start of the rabbit hole. I first looked for a video like this, instead I found an English cover. Most of the word I thought sounded right for a 1-1 Translation. that lead me to translate the title which i found to be 'Love of Lindens'. I am a plant buff, so I am aware that Lindens are a tree. With this knowledge, I returned to the Cover and notice that said trees are not mentioned. this lets me know that the cover is not 1-1, but modified. Now my search was to find a direct translation, however I kept running into the problem of every "translation" is using said modified lyrics. and that leads me to now. In closing, if you read for this long, the heart of this story is that because of all of this I realized that Romanian it a unique Language that a 20 year old at 1 in the morning in american is now interested in learning, thank to this song and my love for it.

Blows my mind how much I understand of this while reading the lyrics. I had latin class for almost four years in high school and my mother is half brazilian/half spanish so I'm quiet familiar with roman languages. Crazy how it all is derived from a language that was spoken 1000s of years ago

From Bulgarian I understand almost nothing 😢 the closest was voinic, in Romanian 'brave' yet in Bulgarian 'soldier'. From my mother tongue English, I truly got nothing. There's a few parts of Italian in there that are familiar, as you said the Latin roots.

I think this song is about relating the shining disco ball lamps to the glittering sunlight penetrating among the leaves of the linden tree. Two men came to a masquerade party dance/ball, an outlaw and a gentleman, each introducing themselves to a beautiful woman who covered her eyes with the masquerade mask. She refused to dance with any one of them, and they keep chasing her back in the ball, and hence the chorus: “You want to leave, but you don’t take me with you, you don’t take me, you don’t take me with you,”. Linden trees have been a symbol of love back in Romania and Germany. This song is about love at a first sight. And also unanswered love.

IIRC Romanian (the language of the song) is practically the closest language in modern day to the Vulgar Latin.
I wanna say it’s because the regions that became modern-day Romania were far enough away from Constantinople to survive the Fall of the Byzantine Empire, so the language simply evolved on its own with little to no outside interference.

Linden is one of three English names for the tree genus Tilia (also known as lime and basswood). Several of the common names for species within the genus Tilia have "linden" in their names. It is typical of temperate regions, with well-marked seasons. For Germans, linden trees were sacred trees with magical powers that protected warriors.
