    I’m 14 It happened too me on July 29th, so it’s been 4 months still going on. At the beginning I was scared, confused, depressed, my world was falling apart. I didn’t know anything and cried for almost 3 weeks. I thought I would never get better but honestly it does, you learn too live with it till it goes away yk it just becomes something running in the background until it disappears. It’s really mind altering and the best you can do is continue on with your life. The more you focus on it the more it’s gonna ruin your life but I promise you it gets better, you’ll be okay. Much love❤️

      Transient DP usually gets better on its own through distraction techniques, relaxation, etc. DPD is somewhat different - but fingers crossed you continue to find your symptoms improving :-)

    Hi Joe, firstly thank you for making this channel and these videos! I'm a long-term sufferer of dpd myself, starting when I was around 11...I'm 32 now. throughout my life, it's been sort of off and on however in 2020 just before the pandemic hit it came back and has never gone away since. Weirdly though to my knowledge, at the time it came back I don't feel I had anything "worthy" of my brain to protect me from... life was good, work was great, and I can't say there was anything that I was depressed about or anything. but BANG! I woke up one day and there it was again...like you I've tried tons of different medications, cbt, meditation and dietary changes to combat this, you'll not be surprised to learn nothing has eased symptoms at all. I've now just given up hope to be honest with you....but your channel has made me feel some kind of I don't know silver lining knowing that I'm not the only one struggling with dpd. thanks again!

      Oh, you're absolutely not alone in what you're experiencing - 1% of the population are thought to have this chronically, let alone experience transient symptoms! Glad you've been getting something out of the videos. It's definitely strange how the symptoms can come on even though we don't think we're 'needing' to be protected by it - I'm in a similar boat to you in that I can't identify anything major in my life currently 'requiring' depersonalisation. It's such a tricky thing to get to the bottom of!

    Its good to know that you're not the only one going through something. Well I've been depersonalized and derealized for 10 years now. Mine was due to trauma, a lot of crazy stuff happened in my family when I was a kid even till now, it really messed me up. Everything feels like a dream, objects around me are wider and flat and seem farther away from me. I get panic attacks like occasionally. I'm also aggressive towards people even though I don't wanna be. Sometimes I come back to reality, and then I get really scared and start screaming and crying involuntarily cos even though it looks real I'm just so used to seeing everything distorted and then i revert back to the dream state. Also I tend to laugh alot, also find it very hard to focus. I find it really hard to make proper eye contact with people. It's just really crazy.

Practice meditation, TALK TO SOMEONE!!!!!! Please talk to someone about it. This is going to sound crazy but this is how it goes away. Accept it. Say this: I have these feelings of derealization, I have these feelings and they can’t hurt me. Remember these sensations cannot hurt you and it does go away. Get off the internet and stop researching this condition. It will make it worse, as DP dwells in research. Let the dp be there and don’t be afraid of it as it cannot hurt you, continue to engage in everyday life. Eventually it will go away, you cannot see these changes everyday and if yo wake up every days wondering if it is gone you’ll be depressed. I got it back in the beginning of 2019 after a bad high. And i haven’t been able to stop. It’s been such a hard journey, i felt like i had so much potential and now it’s all wasted. To the point where i don’t wanna live anymore. I used to be religious but now i feel Godless after this , and i feel so scared and sad about it. I’ve been going to therapy to cope with it, and was able to treat some of the depression and anxiety. I don’t get panic attacks as i used to in the beginning. The heightened anxiety is gone. Now i feel so empty and i feel so close to just giving up. I have no idea what else to do. My therapist suggested anti depressants but it’s not that. I just wanna stop dissociating and be a normal teen girl. I’m not even like this curious or existential person, i never went through some traumatic trauma. I’m just a normal girl, a normal young woman. I. Feel like such a disappointment to my friends and family, like wasted potential. I just wanna feel normal, it’s been over two years and it feels like I’ll never see the bright side. I just wanna feel normal and i don’t know what to do. i just wanna be normal and happy. Really sorry to hear that Charlie - it really is a horrible condition that is so difficult to live with. It might be worth finding another therapist if it feels like your current one has taken you as far as they're able to...often, it's a case of finding somebody with extensive experience of treating DP (which can be tricky) and working with them. Most 'general' therapists have never heard of it and treating it can be quite experimental.

    Depersonalisation is really common in trans people and recovery can sometimes happen quite quickly there because the reason we're depersonalised is that we don't see our bodies as ours since they don't match our internal gender (even before we realise we're trans). When you finally get to a state where you look right to yourself, it should melt away pretty quickly because the cause is gone. At least I hope that's what's gonna happen for me (I mean, it's already lessened and I'm not even on HRT yet).

    • @DPDDiaries
      @DPDDiaries  3 года назад +2

      That's very true - DPD can often be caused by some degree of 'mismatch' within your personality - and as you say, gender dysphoria is an interesting case study on that. Transitioning often relieves the dissociation by 'resolving' that mismatch that might be causing internal friction.

    • @lateralyst
      @lateralyst 3 года назад +1

      @@DPDDiaries Exactly. Instead of male, I've for most of my life just seen myself as genderless and disembodied, even before I've known about concepts of non-binary gender. • @DPDDiaries
      @DPDDiaries  3 года назад +1

      Sorry to hear that - I have heard from a few people for whom Covid has directly impacted the onset of DP. I'm not a medical professional, but it sounds like being stuck at home is causing you to overthink; and you've identified that when you don't think about it the depersonalisation goes. So distracting yourself can absolutely help - keep as busy as you can and try not to keep monitoring the symptoms like you would a temperature with a thermometer.

      @@marleen775 see the fact that your afraid of it is what makes it so hard for you. I can have it for 20+ years and not even be scared by the thought. My point being, the more afraid u r of it and the more attention u give it the worse it will be. I was in the same boat at first, terrified. The thought of being stuck with it forever made me cry so much lmao. The truth is it's only temporary tho and the more u fear it and pay attention to it, the more u feed it. The way to cure it is by realizing there's nothing to be afraid of, not paying it any attention, and just living/enjoying life normally. Depersonalization is not dangerous you'll be completely fine, so there's nothing to be afraid of. Its a natural reaction in our brain when we go through something harsh/traumatic, but for some reason it sticks around a little while for some ppl. So now u know it's not dangerous, in fact it's completely safe and will not lead to other mental problems, u now know that it's only temporary, u now know there's nothing to be afraid of, u now know that paying attention to it will make it worse, u now know how to cure it, which is by not being afraid of it and not paying attention to it and just living your life normally. Now that u know this, why pay attention to it? Doing so will only make things worse and u know there's nothing to be afraid of and that it's only temporary!! A good piece of advice is not to do research on it. Doing so you r paying attention to it making it worse. Do yourself a favor and never type in depersonalization ever again until your cured it only makes it worse trust me I've had depersonalization twice. Also, no drugs, not even caffeine trust me. Find a good hobby or something to get your mind off it. Also, for me it slowly faded away over time. It gets to a point where u don't even care about the derpersonalization anymore and it slowly fades away. Good luck recovering!! U got this:)

      Drugs can be a common trigger for depersonalisation, but the psychological theory is that it's our reaction to a particular drug (often a 'bad trip', resulting in a panic attack) rather than any sort of chemical change in the brain. People with a 'drug trigger' factor were often close to the point of overwhelm in other areas of their life - the traumatic experience of the drug(s) is sometimes enough to trigger the response. I'd very much urge you to discuss your case with a trained medical professional if it feels like things aren't improving.

    doesnt it depend on the kind of personality and traits someone got to say if its „very difficult“ to recover or not? some people are much stronger mentally and otherd tend to being pessimistic? this topic is seen in many other things at life. some people become very successful others are fine with little. some people work hard for being millionair and do it others live for just 2 meals per day. what do you think?

      I've long thought there might be _something_ in different personalities vs. DPD....it could 'just' be that more sensitive people are more prone to struggling with adversity; though it could be more deep rooted too, or even genetic...I keep trying to convince clinicians to look into that!!

      I'm not sure anybody who lives with chronic DPD would appreciate being told it's a nice, positive thing? The book also exists to help a sufferer's family/friends understand their condition better - so I think highlighting how it can negatively impact them and how it makes them feel is absolutely relevant for that conversation. If DPD was a positive, beneficial thing, the book wouldn't be necessary.

Ive been trying to heal myself for 15 years and i have made progress. Only the progress is spiral like and not linear.

      Personally my DPD is 24/7 and fairly constant, but many do find it changes in intensity quite dramatically - so you're definitely not alone in having it move around.

      I’d recommend reading up about cannabis and the two widely known components - THC (psychoactive with potential for neurological harm), and CBD (psycho-protective anti-anxiety factors). There are lots of small scale scientific trials about CBD and many different ways to take it in different strengths. Some people have reported incredible results/ others say it’s done nothing for their anxiety. There’s a lot more research to do and nothing conclusive, but educating yourself is a start.

    I have watched over 5 videos that claim to have a clue to recovery. So far, you guys havent really said anything. You keep explaining what it is but never any clue to recover or cure and it's so annoying!!! If you dont know anything stop wasting people's time please i'm so frustrated right now!

    • @DPDDiaries
      @DPDDiaries  3 года назад +3

      This video doesn't claim to have a clue to recovery - it simply explains why recovery is possible but a "magic cure" doesn't exist. This channel exists to help you learn about the condition and assist you with approaching medical professionals who have the qualifications and skills to help treat it. DPD can be a complex condition that often needs medical expertise to treat - so I very much urge you to speak with a clinician if you haven't already.

    suboxon or naloxin good for depersonalization?

    • @DPDDiaries
      @DPDDiaries  3 года назад

      No individual medications have shown to be statistically effective on any significant scale - some people do get relief from specific meds, but it depends whether the med is targeting what is causing the DP for that person. Eg. an anxiety medication _might_ help somebody for whom their DP is being caused by anxiety; but if it's being caused by trauma, that med would likely have no effect. So - definitely something to discuss with a clinician, but aside from the SSRI + Lamotrigine combination (which showed a _small_ statistical success in studies; but in reality the percentage of people it helps is still tiny...it had zero effect on me), there is no medication known to effectively treat depersonalisation in any significant number of people. Psychological therapies are usually the No. 1 form of treatment, which are a fair bit more effective overall.

      @DPDDiaries  3 года назад

      It's hard to say as every professional I've seen has had a slightly different take on it; and no treatment based on them has improved my symptoms. But it's most likely emotional difficulties during childhood (bullying at school, primarily) and the negative self beliefs that caused. Also a history of depression, and potentially a cannabis trigger. I tick a lot of boxes...!!

      In a sense - I do a lot of demo work for guitar equipment manufacturers on RUclips. I can work it around my good & bad days; so I'm always very busy with it, and it's all positive in terms of building a profile in the industry and furthering my knowledge of things I'm passionate about....but financially, I think you'd probably have to say I'm unemployed, as it doesn't put much food on the table and I still live with my parents.
