Punch-Out!! Translations

- CLOSED CAPTIONS MUST BE ON! This video used to use Annotations until RUclips discontinued them. The translations now appear when enabling "Subtitles/closed captions (c)".
These are the translations for the non-English-speaking characters in Punch-Out!! for the Wii (minus King Hippo and the secret character, for obvious reasons). These were translated by friends, family, the Internet, RUclips comments, GameFAQs, and myself. Some quotes are mixed in with background music and other sound effects since they are not in the sound test and had to be recorded during gameplay.
If you have any corrections, suggestions, or complete translations for any phrases, please put them in the comments so I can edit them in. Thanks!
Credit to R151NGT3MP357 and his Urdu-speaking friend for some Great Tiger translations, and GameFAQs member Sirius for Piston Hondo.
Edit: This is missing a couple of Piston Hondo's quotes, as well as Von Kaiser yelling "KAMPFSTIEFEL!" in Title Defense mode (it's a German military phrase meaning 'combat boots'). - Игры
6:19 Everyone else: genuinely glad that they won
Bald Bull: attempts to intimidate the audience and starts dancing like a chicken for some reason
Turkey and turkish wow ok
Then he throws the ref out in td
Bald bull accidentaly pressed the emote button
Well it's more of a taunting then anything, he first asks if anyone else is brave enough to mess with him then dances probably because he is happy and to taunt the looser ofcourse.

As a french myself I LOVE Glass Joe's voice, he sounds so funny and serious xD It's also funny to know that his voicer, Christian Bernard, is quite famous and is not french, but canadian
such a small world ! A french camarade !
I love the way Soda Popinski speaks.
***** ah? what makes you think that ? he sounds much like "french" french to me.
***** ah?.. well, maybe then.
Well. Canada does have French-Canadians.
i'm glad to see that they used a pretty good spanish voice actor in Don Flamenco. It's nice to see that fits him perfectly
Not only that, but Spanish people: "HE GOT THE REGIONAL DIALECTS RIGHT!!!!"
Mas o meno nadamas de españa no de mexico
@@elexiel2252 Obvio no le va a dar de México, si Don Flamenco fuese mexicano sería Don Cumbia AJJAJAJAJAJAJA
@@LoanRepresentative logica rapida papu

Glass joe: “Ha ha, oh shit.”
Is that an unused dialogue?
Update: this was used in the game.

Piston Hondo: If you don’t enter the tiger’s den, you won’t get the tiger’s kids.
Great Tiger: *You don’t say*
Underrated comment right here
Edit: if you don't enter the Tiger's den, you won't get great tiger
I just realized something, Don Flamenco is seen bullfighting in this game, but he LOSES, to Bald Bull, how does that work? Then again, it would just be cool to see how any of the non-Mac matches went. Imagine Bear Hugger vs. King Hippo...
Leumas Dauenhauer Bear Hugger... Would probably win.
+Leumas Dauenhauer There is actually but its just Mr. Sandman for glory defeating every other opponent in the game.
Link the hero That's only the KO's, like, we don't even know if any of the fighters that got KO'd even go a punch in.
actually there is only a 1 in 2 chance of them fighting, maybe he didn’t even make it to the world circuit by the time Bald Bull was there.
I don’t think bald bull is exactly in don’s weight class
Soda Popinski: "My favourite drink is victory." Then he would love a certain Pennsylvania brewery named Victory.
But then he’d probably go back to being Vodka Drunkenski
*Rimshot*
Sorry for My shitty Humor
Viktor E. Drunkenski.
there a beer in mexico called victoria (victory in english)
Plastic Cyborg I’m sure he’s trying to stay sober with all the soda he’s drinking, it’s the drunken speech he has to deal with.
I didn't know that, I guess I know where to go
I've always liked how they went the extra mile and had all the fighters speak their native languages.
Not Aran Ryan.Native language in Ireland is gaeilge
@@anitanicamhlaoidh586 they speak English as well tho
Am I the only one who really enjoys when Glass Jo says "Eh, Eh Liberty!"? I love the way he pronounced it, it's so cool.
Nah, I love it too
"Come on. Come for me."
Whoa, calm down there, Don.
+Myathewolfeh1 Really, Don, Mac's 17.
I THOUGHT THE SAME
XD
Myathewolfeh1 Venga Venga
MyselfTheThird don is 6 years older
Little Mac is 17 years old and stands at 5 feet 7 inches. I'm nearly as tall as him. He isn't AS little as he was in the original, but still pretty little considering he beat fighters like soda and sandman who were at least 6 feet tall.
I'm 12 and I'm 5 7 lol
Corbinboy give me your chromosomes!
Corbinboy Dude, I'm 12 too and I'm 5'9
Patrick Arreola Lol, I feel really small now. I'm 16 and 5'6. :|
My friend is 11 and 5'9
You know what amazes me about this game? They actually got the spanish right. Look, I'm Spaniard, and even through a lot of Americans don't know this, there are a lot of different Spanish dialects. A lot. And it's incredebly common (and frustrating) to mix them up, specially in Hollywood.
A gaming exemple: Do you know how the people speak Spanish in Resident Evil 4? That's not how Sapnish sounds here. The Sapnish we talk in Spain, which is called "Castillan", has some very distinctive traits, for exemple, we don't say the "S" and the "Z" with the same sound (as some Latin-American countries do).
What is really amazing is how the lines Don Flamenco says are... correct. He actually use proper accent and slang (4:25: you wouldn't hear that "pillao" in a formal meeting...) that people uses every day in Spain. People usually complain about his lines being stereotypical (they are), but who cares, everyone in Punch Out is a walking stereotype. It's just that I'm glad that, for once, they did they research when getting Spanish into something.
Yeah, they put a lot of effort into getting all the languages right. It's pretty awesome :3
yeah I got a Spanish parent so I often heard bits of Spanish and I agree it's quite proper one in the game. Also they did the French correctly too (I know it for sure).
Quite a leap from the first game, where Piston Honda would greet you with "Sushi nippon sugoi kamikaze" or something like that XD
People who get offended about this game need to chill btw. It would have been racist if they were making some countries out to be better than others, but they're taking the piss out of everyone :3
JWtheMighty sure. Same for old Soda Popinski... or should I say "VODKA DRINKiski" how he was called in the first game. Quite a shameless stereotypical picture of Russian men. Anyway, this game may still have some lame stereotype characters (just look at the french guy knocked down with croissants flying around, or at his intro in front of the Eiffel tower with a beret and baguette. Just lame) but there were nice cultural efforts as well. Especially with the most foreign languages, like hindi or turkish. It gives a nice touch for anyone curious about (beating off) other cultures. (XP lol)
***** his old name is Vodka Drunkenski.
4:13 he really said "LET'S GOOOO!" 😂
"LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOO"
Piston Hondo went full blown JoJo with that battle cry.

Well i can speak German and English
Um auto genorateed
I am from Germany and i don't spot a single mistake in Von Kaisers quotes =) That makes me kind of glad xD
Could you tell me what does he say when Little Mac gets up, like how is it written?
Pedro Juan "Ich glaube ich habe eine Schraube los"
You say that if you can't believe what's happening. (Some old people here say that)
lohweo Thanks
What dose he say when he dose the spin also I speak mid Spanish and here's some translations carman mi amor (carman my love)
Venga, venga! ¿Què pasa? ¿Quieres más? (Come come what? You want more?
lohweo Well, he says "Präsizion" instead of "Präzision", but seeing that regularly receives hits to his skull, it's an acceptable blooper :P
Soda Pop technically says "I'll crush you" not "I'll rip you apart", but nobody cares.
Joe is such a loveable goof. The 'Do you like it' and 'Are you in good shape' quotes are from when he adjusts his headgear during Title defense. The guy is trying to make small talk in the ring and I love it
Glass joe: my doctor says your bad for my health
Damn, glass joe be trash talking
Lmao
"Torya" is an actual Japanese battle cry?! That's awesome! I thought it was just a random word they used in Sonic Adventure 2.
That was 'Teria!' or something like that
+tails41yoshi It's a battlecry, so it might vary from person to person.
It's "Orya"
TORYAH BLIPBLIPBLIP FIYUR

4:34
When he says "No te parezco que huelo a victoria" he means "Don't you think I smell 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 victory?" Other than that, good translation
Ik.
He says "Battleboots!", a German military phrase. I forgot to include that, sorry.
It s combat boots
KAMPSTIEFEL!

Can we all just agree that Don has the most charisma by far?
Wish RUclips made annotations for mobile...
Yeah, me too.
I third this notation -.-'
Same here...I REALLY want to hear it in English
Si
Same.
i never understood why they never translated what the other fighters said but the have Doc's quotes (which is already in english) in text at the bottom of the screen
Yeah. You’d figure that they’d have put an option for captions for the opponents who don’t speak English for us Americans who don’t have a clue what they are saying.
I think it’s more interesting to find what they’re saying after you fight everybody
I think Bald Bull's "I'll pulverise anyone who looks at me funny" made me crap myself.
5:42 best line
It's a shame that Soda is clearly not voiced by a native Russian. He is extremely close, but there is still a little accent in some of the verbs.
He used to be called vodca drunkinsky sadly
Jaxon Keyes Yeah, I know, but it doesn't bother me much. Maybe if they got Drunkinsky out of his name, it would not sound so racist.
true true
+Ace of spades Yeah many things are racist in the first punch out, just get to Piston Honda and see what they did in intermissions.
+Ireena Somerset Damn you can tell? Nice.
Gotta love Great Tiger! Me? My favorite lines from him are actually back-to-back. From 3:38 to 3:50, he just seemed SO badass!
0:43 GAY KANYE!
I'm so obsessed about this game, that I don't need subtitles to watch this video because I memorized all the translations

Any one else hear glass joe say "oh shit" at the very beginning?
He actually said "zut" which translates to "Darn"
I didn’t even notice that until you pointed it out
6:40 LOTS OF CARROTS -Bald Bull

Garbage
it would be cool if they had a soda popinski line where he said "i will break you" as reference to rocky IV, where rocky fights the russian.
Is it me or did the little mac from the original punch out looked ALOT like Sylvester Stallone? I mean come on, it was released about 2 years after rocky 3 came out (p.o.-Feb 1984, R3-May 1982) and doc louis and little mac are a pair a pair has 2, it was 2 yrs as i just said... illumimacky confirmed

Glass Joe is like the least likely to have any actual disliking towards Little Mac, which is one reason I like him
Love him too probably my fave
5:58 basically means "cheers!". In Russia and slavic countries we very often drink for someones health, so it basically means that
5:36 it doesnt say "ill rip you apart", задавить means "to crush someone with a foot", so basically it translates to "I'm Soda Popinski! I will crush/stomp you!"
5:32 looks like you need *to* drink, Little Mac
5:42 not with an arm, with one arm. still makes sense, just a typographical error
5:59 does he really say anything there?
0:02 Glass Joe: My hands hurt, these boxing gloves are too tight.
6:56 When someone tries to touch me
My dad really understands Bald Bull's quotes! 😂
Is it just me or is Glass Joes voice too deep for his scrawny body
I started laughing when Hondo said "egg... Egg..."
0:14 Auto generated titles are amazing
"The pocket son she said wid nuff cow"
i feel good for glass joe when he wins in the defense mode.
When Glass Joe says "Oh Darn" it sounds like he is saying Oh S**t!
Kids don't play this game because it curses!
Trust me back when I was 9 (now 13) I always thought he cursed but I kept playing the game
Annotations need to be on...?
Well mobile users are screwed
.
ME
Nah its funnier with autocaptions
I know .-. I must wait to be on my laptop
Awesome Alan4ever Oh...That explains it. :/
i have subtitles on my phone....welp
Sometimes Don also says "¡Espera!" in a high pitched voice, when you punch and he blocks. It just means "Wait!"
To whoever that complains about incorrect translations: A key part about translating is making it sound normal in English. In Spanish, a direct translation of April 1st would be The 1st of April or something. But we don't say things like that. So, to make it make sense (which is the point) you must translate it further.
Thanks for the support. You guys have helped out a lot.
I'm Spanish and Don Flamenco's quotes are spot-on! Good job!
4:57 damn if u want me to 😏
5:00
real
Well, 5:34 sounds more like "I'm Soda Popinski! I'll SMASH you!"
No. He said "crush"
@@zhetsmash, crush same thing.
"YEAH IM SODA POPINSKI, YEAH I WILL SEND YOU TO THE HOSPITAL FOR MOTNHS."
I feel like Great Tiger is actually dead and his soul is being maintained by his jewel, explaining the lines talking about death and also the fact that he fades away in his Title Defence defeat animation.
So you basically murder him by winning?
4:40 Well, Olé is often used when you avoid being hit by the bull, but I understand why it could be interpreted as Bravo
Wow, I have been looking for translations of what these guys have been saying for so long. Thank you for all the time and effort and support you're getting for this.
Cheers, mate!
Which is why Nintendo actually took the time to translate the boxers' sayings into the appropriate languages: so that small children won't understand them unless speaking the language. Unlike the original Punch-Out!!, when they all spoke perfect English.
This video beat Duel Screens by about a decade. I remember when I first watched it, it really illustrates the difference between turn-of-the-decade videos, and the videos we get today. This isn't produced like a video essay or anything, but it's simple, and it's all we wanted back in 2009.
Here For The Comments you said the whole thing, congrats
Same, I guess it depends on what you're looking for.
MAN! You do not believe how much I'll thank you for finding these translations!!!

Thanks alot for this video, clearly a lot of research went into this. I think the only thing left to be translated is Piston Hondo's headband.
We'll have to ask Nintendo for translations of King Hippo and DK's dialogue.
For Piston Hondo, the first one sounds like he's saying "Chesto!" which can refer to him aiming for the chest, thus translating to "Chest!"
After "It hurts!", he says "Dame da!" which means "No good!" Also, he doesn't say "Good!" after that one. He says "Uso!" which can be translated as "No way!"

Thanks a LOT for this!
Although at 4:34 he says "I smell like victory" without the "ah": he uses the verb phrase "oler a".
See, I always thought that the "dancing noises" Bald Bull might have something to do with the fact he's dancing like a chicken, like he's mocking everyone for being too cowardly to fight him.
Ok, so, I don't want to be 'that guy' but I really needed a translation for Aran Ryan.
Thanks :D it just sound reeealy cool ! :D
Cool, thanks man, I was always curious about what they were saying, but I could only get something out of Flamenco, Joe and all the english-speaking opponents.
When Great Tiger is saying "Oh, where am I?" it sounds like "uh my gud..."
My mom thought he was saying “I eat corn”
I'm french native, and :
0.31 "ma tête est en pleine forme !" means "my head is being very well!", or "my head is fine!" -- 0:48 : "alors, t'es en forme?" same note, it actually means "so, you're fine?" (like if he was asking "how are you".)
0:31
thanks you made searching this easy
Olé is a bullfighting thing too, when the bull is going against the bullfighter and he can full the bull he would yell "Olé", it expresses how he outsmarted the bull, I haven't played the game yet but it would only make sense if he yells that after he dodged a punch :D
2:06 It’s “this humble one is called Hondo”
