Transport Fever 2: Uxbridge branch, Metropolitan Railway, in 1912 - 2 - Coal Train

- The 6 mile branch from Harrow on the Hill to Uxbridge opened in 1904 and was little changed when, in 1912, the Ordnance Survey large scale maps of the area were updated. This recreation is firmly based on those maps and aims to bring to life a vanished world before suburbia and modernisation swept away the peaceful Middlesex countryside (as well as the slums and workshops of old Uxbridge).
In this video we follow a coal train delivering to the gas works at South Harrow with a shunt up the viaduct and a wrong-way return. Apologies for confusing The Ridgeway, which crosses the railway midway between Harrow and Rayners Lane, with Imperial Drive, which does not.

Important - Limitations of this medium

I can only use the assets (houses, stations, rails, scenery etc.) available either in the base game or generously made available by modders.
The Metropolitan Railway used (and still uses) fourth rail electrification, with two driving tracks and two electric but there is no mod for this track and I have chosen to use non-electrified track instead.
There are very few models of houses, farms, cottages and shops of this period available for the game, so I have used whatever was to hand and I hope that the general impression is convincing even if the detail is not.
Some assets, like fences and doors, flicker. This may caused by problems with TF2 or perhaps my video card is not up to the job. Sorry.

This has made my day! I used to commute from Eastcote to South Ken via Rayners L so know the area well. As a local history buff this is simply joyous! It brings back many memories of visits to South Harrow market with my grandmother and staring up at the gasometer from the grounds of Queensmead school in South Ruislip.

Thank you for taking the trouble to do this I lived in South Harrow from 1957 to 1973. It was only when I joined the local closed Facebook groups that I learnt of its existence. When living there had no idea of the spur I never went down Stanley Road, but used in indoor market to go to
Roxeth Green Avenue. Something I noted in your video was the foot bridge, that reminded me of the similar to that just after going through South Harrow Station on the way to Sudbury Hill & before the South Harrow sidings .

A fantastic video, I lived until recently in West Harrow between the branches of the met and pic and spent many hours watching trains come and go at Rayners Lane, West Harrow and South Harrow,

My grandparents moved to the newly constructed West Harrow/Rayner’s Lane estate in 1932/3 … I recall my late grandmother talking about how even then the view to Rayner’s Lane Station was clear from their back garden.
Grandad worked in the print, taking the Met railway/line daily to work, sometimes falling asleep on his way home and being woken up at the sidings in Uxbridge …

Hello, wonderful videos, keep up the good work. I went to school in Ruislip in the 1970s and there were a couple of children in my class whose grandparents remembered when it was all fields. Hard as a child to imagine that as all I saw were houses - your videos would have helped. I hope you keep doing them. Railway stuff tends to get a lot of subscribers. I’ve been doing little videos on Italy for 3 years and have about 800 subscribers but I just do them for fun so not too bothered about views. Occasionally I get a nice comment which keeps me going! Nice work Anthony - and actually a pretty good reconstruction of the gas works going by photos I have (my great grandparents' house in Sherwood Rd backed onto it). Changed a lot when the massive gas holder arrived and dominated the view around here 😖. One small thing - the first bridge after West Harrow carries The Ridgeway, not Imperial Drive.
Damn, I lived near there for 8 years. Thats the trouble with trying to do a spontaneous commentary. Anyway, glad I got the gasworks right.

No, sorry. Tunnels in TF2 look awful and there is no suitable underground station mod. I have built the Circle line in 1:1 scale for my own amusement but the quality is not good enough to justify putting it on RUclips
