Midnight Club 3 was one of the games that really sold me on this console. It was absolutely mindblowing that what was practically a full PS2 title was on a handheld, let alone that it also played really well
Fun fact about Undercover PSP: I was playing through the game on an emulator myself when I clipped through a barrier in a race and began driving around all of the districts in the game. Initiating police chases, hitting traffic, just exploring the in-game world that actually gets loaded for every single race. The game was very much capable of open world, I think the devs just didn't do it because of time crunch.
Yeah, the game has one race where its too simple to clip through arrow texture, and explore rest of the world on your own, so without this we would never know that open world exits 😆

Something not mentioned in the video, in street supremacy. After you complete the campaign for the first time, you unlock a new game+ feature where you can join any of the team including the ones outside of the three starter teams. And once you beat all of your team leader, you unlock their cars to use in time attack mode
Yeah, you got the hardest & longest track and 600 cars from a bunch of car brands AND A hell lot of license tests Sadly, not a lot of stuff to do in the game but it’s understandable considering the hardware it runs on
GT mode. The most important mode for Gran Turismo is non existent which was a terrible shame because it would have been one of the best games on the console. I know it was practically impossible but a shame none the less
Coming from GT4 I was gutted it didn't have a proper GT mode, it had lots of cars and a great selection of tracks, but imo it was completely lifeless, and especially not having the ability to upgrade cars made me lose all emotional attachment to the cars I had. Not a bad game, especially if you've never played a GT game before, but super disappointing to me. :(
@@PaulTheFox1988 More than a flaw i think is more of a design perspective imo, as the career mode of GT4 (which was very long) wouldnt fit on a get go short experience. Its a different type of game for sure, but good enough in what it wants to be.
1:07:34 Burnout Legends' development was actually started as a port of Burnout 3 before being turned into its own thing. 1:21:55 Split/Second PSP is actually based on beta versions of the game. There are footages of the beta that you can find online. The PSP is faithful to the beta's menus and tracks, like 1:23:55, where the consoles/PC versions has that section replaced by going under the terminal instead of inside. I believe that the entire subplot about the Most Wanted DS was there so Dustin can justify showing himself for the ending. XD
I never experienced any bugs playing burnout legends, I think the only one I can think of is the guardrail on one of the europe maps (It has like a small village and that big bridge leading into a tunnel in the mountains in like a grassy/desertee area) where if you grind up against the one spot you will instantly crash. besides that, bugless experience 15 hours in.
@@Falconhawk3784Yeah, these bugs are caused by the increased emulated clock speeds PPSSPP uses for emulation, happens on the Vita's ePSP too. It also causes a glitch with some car models colliding with their own tires, leading to them being slower or way faster than intended.
Burnout Dominator deserves a shoutout, it ditches the crash mode but incorporates the continuous boosting mechanic of Burnout 1 and 2 with 3's takedowns, so it's very fun to chain burnout, crash down opponents, and avoid traffic.
I had played, and 100%-ed it baby. It's actually great, housing a great soundrack(i've heard Avril L. there for the first time, and N.E.R.D, L.C.D Soundsystem might as well be added there), memorable tracks, litteral mayhem and more. Too bad that it didn't caught up in remembrance as it's bigger brothers like Revenge or even Paradise.
For TDU, I have it on PSP, and the frame rate was never an issue. Even with the fastest cars, I found the cars manageable, except I did struggle with my brake markers, though that's due to the speed that corners can come up on you
@@crack4184 Yeah, he shouldn't assume the game performs badly just because the emulator does. It'd be like complaining a game has bugs, while emulating.
Yeah i don't believe TDU was a pain in the Ass when i'm playing it on the PSP, though for my PSP specifically (i don't know if this is also the case for other PSP) it started to glitch kinda when i overclock the clock speed. Maybe it was the reason why it run poorly on PPSSPP but then again it also could be another issues entirely like Device Specific issues for example.

Unfortunately Nintendo consoles after the 64 had weaker racing game libraries: or the console almost doesnt have much racing games (Switch) or they are riddled with awful Mario Kart clones (Wii). At leas the DS had quite a bit of decent racing games even though the PSP had more. The 3DS is quite sad on this regard, the amount of racing games you can count on your hands and good ones on a single hand.
@@aaryeshg.6526 I wish I had a PSP instead of a DS. The racing games are still very very fun even by today's standards. The racing games were so superior.
Another fun fact about GT PSP: It started out as a port of GT4, then during development was changed to try to be a port of GT5, before finally settling on what we got. But in the game files, the game is still referred to as “GT5M,” or GT5 Mobile.
played for like 5min at school friend gave me a fighting game, loved the psp for the 5minutes, but u can play on Emulator and im sure Eden used an emulator for image clarity. @@sebastiankulche Actually doesn't are, the difficulty are desbalanced with the invencible cops spinning you car, boring and repetitive track layouts, outdated sound effects from Underground 1, no rivals cutscenes from console versions (weird how they ported only the intro), less cars than Underground Rivals and boring gameplay.

Apparently according to the dev diary of Carbon OTC, the drafter was almost cut due to its mechanic's. So they came up with the mechanic's you see in the game called "SuckForce".
WOW! it's 3 AM and here I am watching a 2 hour long video about PSP racing games. And best part of it, I could have easily watched another hour! This video gave me so much nostalgia of the Golden age of street racing games. Seeing all the games I had fun with, the ones I did not have fun with and those that I didn't even get to try, showcased in such interesting and deep manner. Truly amazing job, well done!!!
It’s very interesting to see these games as someone who has never played them. The limitations a system can have will sometimes bring really unique games/ideas. This video was really good. Keep up the good work.
While I don’t agree with some of your opinions regarding some games, I’m so glad a video was made regarding racing games on the PSP. Had lots of memories playing these games growing up.
A trick to make older games look "better" is to not upscale them that much. PSP games look best at around 2-3x upscaling, PS1 and PS2 games look best to me at the regular scale. The imperfections and low-poly models are hidden by the crunch when you don't upscale and it is more true to what the designers of the games intended, the models and textures in RR2 are certainly less obviously low-res when the res is low. Also, RR2 is a fantastic game, the vibes are immaculate.
This was a fantastic video to listen to , many games that I never knew existed for the PSP and so many of them looked really good, congratz on finishing this massive project! ❤
When I was in Advanced Individual Training on active duty, I kept a PSP with a copy of NFS under my pillow and after the cadre came through for head count and left for the night, I pulled that baby out and gave the AI the business.
This video alone made me tear up, It is nice to finally reunite with PSP racing games of which I dearly enjoyed as a child. Thankfully with emulators I was able to ROM up the games I used to play and finally relive those times and cry even more.
If you enjoyed this mini ridge racer game, you should definitely try Ridge Racer Type 4 on PS1 or on an emulator - beautiful game with a cult following and mega soundtrack. Awesome drift system.
you can play type 4 on your psp as well, but ridge racer 2 is not a "mini" ridge racer game, it includes everything from ridge racer type 4 and everything before, plus new content. RR2 for the PSP and RR1 on the same system too, are considered by most to be the most content packed in the series.
I just started the video and this is amazing, what a huge project! Love this channel, actual research behind the topics, well edited and written, and all by one of the masterminds behind the Pepega franchise. I know it's early, but great job!
Great one Dustin! I played the hell out of GT PSP back on my PSP to the point of unlocking all difficulty settings for all races, it was hell. The game actually has one extra final weird gimmick mechanic, and it's actually tied to Gran Turismo 5: You can link the PSP while running it to a PS3 running GT5, and you can transfer over a selection of cars from your garage so that they can be used in Arcade mode. Originally the manual mentioned you'd be able to use it career, but they just limited to Arcade. The real funny thing of the mechanic is, get this: It's the PSP car models on the PS3. So it's completely separate models. Which includes unique variants of vehicles that are only available as Premium cars in the normal game.
Great video as always. Definitely brought back the nostalgia of Granturismo, Carbon, Underground Rivials, and Most wanted 5-1-0. Honestly my biggest gripe with 5-1-0 was the design decision for slow cars on fast paced tracks and fast cars on tight cornered tracks. I hated the final boss battle with Razor and it took many attempts to beat it back in the day.
31:05 SUV goes past and hits the car's rear side. A split second after the car's right door and the roof get bent out of shape while the rear is fine. Amazing.
growing up with a PSP and a knack for driving games, playing a lot of these games, the video has been a great nostalgia trip and critique piece for games i both played and never played. will forever miss the times of recruiting and using street supremacy wanderers to conquer tokyo, the banging base gameplay and soundtrack of ridge racer, the overall greatness of MCLA remix and messing about in the two Burnout games among other things, in and out of the collection of games you've mentioned here. good times.
That game was developed by Sumo Digital, who also did the PSP port of Split/Second. Well, I wouldn't say port as in a one to one port, many things have been changed for that version other than the graphics, examples include Airport Terminal using the beta layout seen in one of the trailers for the game proper, physics being questionable at points (no joke, any of the tracks that involve the carrier ship route changer will occasionally cause your car to clip through the world after landing, and it doesn't get better on the inside, as even that as issues, sometimes your car will flip like it's a hot wheels game), menus being based on the beta, extra tracks from the Survival mode, cars having different stats, and more. The Sumo Digital version of the game was heavily based on some parts of the game's Beta, which had been leaked and there are videos of the beta on RUclips.
He also missed out on Colin McRae Rally 2005 Plus. It's nearly a one-to-one port of the PS2 version. There was also Race Driver 2006 which was exclusive to the PSP and for some reason it crashes ppsspp emulator when I try to start a particular race as well. Never been able to finish this game due to that weird issue.
He also missed out on Sega Rally and the two WipEout games. I think the simple fact is, the PSP was such a haven for racing games, there are just too many to cover in a single video
The ridiculous amount of coverage in this video is unmatched. Well done. This is truly a masterpiece in all aspects. The skits inbetween and the curb stomp of the MW05 DS at the end gives this video infinetly more character than any other longform series of reviews i have ever seen.
I feel like everybody forgot the two pursuit force games, not 100% racing games, but driving was the core part of the game. One of the best PSP exclusive title, it was truly unique and well made. I wish the franchise had continued...
TDU for PSP goes so far back for me. I can remember playing it as a toddler no more than 3 years old. I believe it is the root cause for my interest in cars today. Such a great game
As a DS kid I felt left out of the racing hype back in the day, and a bit jealous of the PSP. They may not hold up perfectly to modern titles, but this was very satisfying to watch!
I trust you’re being objective about which game is best, but Street Supremacy is 10/10 in my book. The fun part about it is when you beat the game you can start over and be a part of ANY crew, not just the 3 you can choose in the beginning. Customization is neat, and the wanderer’s (not part of any crew) have certain specifications that need to be done to recruit them to your team. Like winning with no NOS, not hitting any walls, driving with no brake modifications ect. Unique and fun racer for the time.
Great video! There truly are some gems on the system. Small note: I think the video would flow better without a "couch" segment between EVERY game. I think showing one every 3 or 4 games would be better, since they tend to get repetitive. I had the same though about the DS video as well.
I say this with 100% honesty: you're one of the best youtube reviewers I've ever seen. Your objectiveness, knowledge about the games and their surrounding context and amount of commentary you can cram into 10ish minute segments for each game is nothing short of remarkable. Congrats for your effort, skill and talent :)
Dustin, without no doubt This is by far the best reviews I've seen this year! This just show how amazing PSP gaming consoles for emulating those racing game experience for handheld size, even tho with some slightly drawback for some of it Especially, thanks to PSP, I can enjoy some amazing racing like in PS2 on the go, whatever straight up port from PS2, spin-off, or even Original Mixes like Midnight Club Los Angeles Also, How funny the confrontation between you and the Most Wanted DS which become the "sh##" of racing game ini handheld and you just went straight up AVGN moves at the end Overall, what an amazing reviews I just wanna said thanks to you ofc and whoever involve in this amazing reviews of PSP Retrospective Racing Games that I've been wait since that DS videos Thank You Very Much!
Test Drive Unlimited has a low framerate cap because of the continuous map, if you uncap it on real hardware and drive a fast enough car then the road and scenery start to disappear, you can even drive off the edge of the map. It actually plays fine on real hardware and since the original PSP-1000 has a pretty blurry screen, you really don't want it to run any faster.
Thanks for the explanation! I was using a 60fps cheat on CwCheat/Vita before. Game was probably highly tuned to run as good as it can on stock hardware settings. Game is still a great time. 🙂
This video is expertly written! Nice to see MotorStorm on the list. I highly recommend MotorStorm Pacific Rift as well. It's one of the most fun arcade racing games ever, like a crazier version of Dirt 2.

i think the fact this is emulated definitely has an effect on playing quality (for instance, the 60 fps patch for TDU, is that a thing you can even do on the physical psp?). Ive got a ridiculous amount of time on burnout on a physical psp, and none of the physics issues are present for the crash mode. like something could look scuffed like its ice skating, but the weird bumper cars glitch is something ive never seen in like 400 hours of gameplay. same with the takedowns shooting cars below the map, i have seen that happen but it is super rare. I feel like something with the emus may be muddle physics with burnout, seems like certain titles dont like to run at all emulated, but it is pretty fucking impressive we can emulate these old games and continue to enjoy them. just recently got my psp set up with infinity, im going to give a few of these a try.
not sure about the other issues but I can also agree that taken down cars going below the map is quite rare or not as common as depicted in the vid on native hardware from what i remember growing up
I never had the cars go under the map that often even when I emulated it with PPSSPP lol 60fps TDU is probably possible with either Action Replay or CWCheat, at the expense of battery life I'd assume
Funny how on DS most Need for Speed games were among the best in the library while on the PSP they were usually among the worst, just shows that PSP had way higher standards for games and churning out 6 games in a span of 5 years was not a good idea.
Well made video, I like RUclipsrs who add in a bit of comedy too, nice to see MW DS make a return hahaha. Thank you for this nice, concise and detailed video! Will check out alot of these games on my PSP-3000. I'm still gutted Rockstar never made a new Midnight Club. They absolutely were the kings of street racing back then.
Need for Speed Most Wanted 5-1-0 was my first Need for Speed game as a kid. I remember getting and playing it 24/7 on my PSP. I thought it was the best racing game yet and literally last week I played the PS2 version and was extremely surprised how different the game was to the PSP port. Overall, I had fond memories of Most Wanted on the PSP, even the soundtrack brings back nostalgia.
Great video! Took some time but you managed to come through. TDU was technically a port of the PS2 version that came with the flatter textures and simplyfied graphics. Still a marvel that they managed to port it to mobile.
NFS Carbon for the PSP was better than the PS2 version. I usually hate it when handheld versions of games are completely different than console ones but Christmas 2006 was epic
This is a video I didn't know I needed.. All those years I could not remember the name of some games but here they are. Definitly gonna get some of those games for the PSP again
Nascar on the psp is underrated. It's one for one the console game minus the team commands but you got all the divisions and tracks with little sacrifice.
Loved this one so much!!! PSP is one of my favorite consoles of all time and racing is one of my favorite genres, the effort you put into this is insane. Just for turning a DS game into a character in the video, giving it somehow a personality and a background is something to cheer, you basically gave a DS game a lore 😂 this goes down as one of my all time favs YT videos, no doubt I will revisit it, good work‼
I bought my own PSP-3000 back in 2018(which sadly is out of order right now) used for 50€ from Berlin and it came with Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer 1. My first played game on the PSP wasn't Gran Turismo, it was Ridge Racer and i loved it.
Just to note. Glitches and bugs should be taken with a grain of salt, emulating games is not always perfect so bugs and glitches may pop up due to emulation errors.
As someone who isnt a fan of the Gran Turismo games i enjoyed a lot more than i expected the PSP port. Imo it was very underrated and is one of my most played PSP games due to its content. Possibly GT fans expected other things, but for me this game has all the things i want that the other Gran Turismo games didnt have. Good video btw, would you make videos like this about other platforms?
@@mansreallysaid Licenses arent mandatory, cockpit view, crashing into things doesnt make you faster, AI actually tries to not hit you, handling is way more accessible, and a more "free play style" of game like those old racing games where you do races for fun in any track with any car with any configuration, without career restrictions basically.
@@mansreallysaid i've played both psp and console versions. I think after tweaking the controls for manual handling on the psp version, i find it exceptionally fun and easy to pick up. Possibly it's easier to control overall, and can take it with you. Also on the smaller screen, it still feels just as fast as driving the ps3 or ps4 GTs. One thing i noticed, the console version is more stressful (in a fun way?), possibly cause it's more of a sim than the psp version, and also it's a bit of a pain if i have to setup my wheel. PSP version is just a fun, good port, and probably the best handheld racer.
@@Gold_Lightan The PSP version in max difficult and without assistances is still harder imo, as in the previous games you could abuse certain things to break the difficulty, like using and upgrading certain cars (since cars you race didnt scale to your one for the most part), crashing into walls to gain speed, taking illegal shortcuts or fine tuning cars in a certain way (since they dont work as intended). The PSP version of GT was GT gameplay done right.

1:49:09 as someone who has played loads of NASCAR PSP as well as NASCAR 07 (the game it was ported from), I can say that it is absolutely incredible. It is straight-up the PS2 version of the game, just on a mobile device. Of course, the HUD, menus, and graphics are different from the PS2 version, but in terms of core gameplay and features, it is the same game. The career mode is rather in-depth, and just like the console version, it is still better than any career mode we have gotten in any game since. You could do full-length 3+ hour races if you wanted to, and to the best of my memory, you even race against a full field of 43 cars. To put things into perspective, in Gran Turismo PSP you could only race against three other cars. The driving imo feels much better than the console versions, on consoles the cars were ridiculously loose and really hard not to spin out. But on PSP the cars are a lot tighter and easier to control, which really helps because you dont have a real joystick like on console. The only feature I can think of that they had to cut is the team control thingy (which I never even used anyway). But that likely wasnt a technical limitation, rather it was likely because the PSP didn't actually have enough buttons for it to be implemented. My only complaint about this game is that you cannot have multiple career saves at once, which isnt a dealbreaker but it can be pretty annoying if you're like me and sometimes want a couple of different game saves. Overall rating: In terms of pure gameplay, I would say 8/10 or maybe even 8.5/10. But due to the fact that this is a straight-up PS2 game on the go, I would almost be tempted to say 9/10 or higher.
Wow, I watched the video on DS racing games last night because it randomly showed up in my recommendations, saw some comments suggesting making a video on PSP racing games and looked if that had already been made. Now 12 hours later, that video actually gets released? How did RUclips know to recommend me the DS video at that exact time?
1:31:05 Completed this game in late 2021, and I can relate to what was said in terms of difficulty. The rubberbanding in some events and the questionable physics of some vehicle classes are so annoying that I had to restart some events more than 10 times. But boy, what a game. What an environment. What a SOUNDTRACK (The Hives, Queens of the Stone Age, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy...)
1:48:00 to be fair though, cramming an arcade exclusive onto the psp was probably no easy feat, but that being said you're better off playing the original arcade version of arcade stage 3

Gran Turismo for PSP is really impressive to me. You have the Nurburgring available to you in that game.
Yeah, you got the hardest & longest track and 600 cars from a bunch of car brands AND A hell lot of license tests
Sadly, not a lot of stuff to do in the game but it’s understandable considering the hardware it runs on
GT mode. The most important mode for Gran Turismo is non existent which was a terrible shame because it would have been one of the best games on the console. I know it was practically impossible but a shame none the less
@@chanhkhiemtran9010 It wasnt the hardware, but probably a design choice (PS1 GTs have career and PS1 is way weaker than PSP)
XD
It was cool but got kind of annoying throughout the course of the video

For TDU, I have it on PSP, and the frame rate was never an issue. Even with the fastest cars, I found the cars manageable, except I did struggle with my brake markers, though that's due to the speed that corners can come up on you

@@crack4184
Yeah, he shouldn't assume the game performs badly just because the emulator does.

@@aaryeshg.6526 the DS was great for other type of games like platformers, RPGs, adventures and turn based games

WOW! it's 3 AM and here I am watching a 2 hour long video about PSP racing games.
In Street Supremacy, you can take on an entire team all by yourself, that is if you were confident in your car and can outrun them all without losing.
Not to mention maintaining loyalty
I loved that mini game so much

Great one Dustin!
I played the hell out of GT PSP back on my PSP to the point of unlocking all difficulty settings for all races, it was hell.
The game actually has one extra final weird gimmick mechanic, and it's actually tied to Gran Turismo 5:
You can link the PSP while running it to a PS3 running GT5, and you can transfer over a selection of cars from your garage so that they can be used in Arcade mode.
I hated the final boss battle with Razor and it took many attempts to beat it back in the day.
i beat him second try by pit maneuvering him in the gas station xD

It's a shame you didn't go into Outrun 2006 as I think it's the best racing game on the PSP.

Hell there are some games I wish I got to play along with some I’m ok missing out on
I trust you’re being objective about which game is best, but Street Supremacy is 10/10 in my book.

I only played a PSP once, and it was fine. I have to admit that is a console that should have more love. I certainly think it should.
Test Drive Unlimited has a low framerate cap because of the continuous map, if you uncap it on real hardware and drive a fast enough car then the road and scenery start to disappear, you can even drive off the edge of the map.
It actually plays fine on real hardware and since the original PSP-1000 has a pretty blurry screen, you really don't want it to run any faster.

i think the fact this is emulated definitely has an effect on playing quality (for instance, the 60 fps patch for TDU, is that a thing you can even do on the physical psp?). I feel like something with the emus may be muddle physics with burnout, seems like certain titles dont like to run at all emulated, but it is pretty fucking impressive we can emulate these old games and continue to enjoy them. just recently got my psp set up with infinity, im going to give a few of these a try.
not sure about the other issues but I can also agree that taken down cars going below the map is quite rare or not as common as depicted in the vid on native hardware from what i remember growing up
I never had the cars go under the map that often even when I emulated it with PPSSPP lol
60fps TDU is probably possible with either Action Replay or CWCheat, at the expense of battery life I'd assume
Outrun PSP is also an amazing port of the Console game. It's basically console quality just like Burnout Legends.
Funny how on DS most Need for Speed games were among the best in the library while on the PSP they were usually among the worst, just shows that PSP had way higher standards for games and churning out 6 games in a span of 5 years was not a good idea.

The best part of this video is when Dustin obliterates a copy of MWDS and that literally made me cough while laughing harder than an ass whooping
1:31:05 Completed this game in late 2021, and I can relate to what was said in terms of difficulty. The rubberbanding in some events and the questionable physics of some vehicle classes are so annoying that I had to restart some events more than 10 times. But boy, what a game. What an environment. @@AudioHead809 who was?
@@LotsOfToubleUsuallySerious Most wanted ds
@@AudioHead809 oh, yeah, when he's depressed at the shower. I think traumatized isn't the right term
Underground Rivals and Most Wanted are probably the best racing games I played on PSP. Damn, the nostalgia hits hard.
Finally the movie I have been waiting for. Time to grab the 🍿
And I grab my martabak and watch it along with my mother XD
@@Mx64MaxyImpress oooo noodles for me
What a great throwback. I really enjoyed MCLA Remix and Burnout Legends on the PSP. Only thing I miss here is WipEout. I spent so much time on WipEout Pulse, seemed to be one of the best optimized titles too
The wait was well worth it my friend, one of the if not the best vid you have made, and that scene where you killed the DS version of most wanted was surprisingly great.
Keep up the amazing work and hopefully you get a lot of subs, you deserve the best and I’m being really honest here, people who have over 100k subs or hell above 1mil doesn’t even make vids as close as stylish and edited as you do.
I noticed that Street Supremacy has KITT from Knight Rider as a usable car, something i haven't seen in a lot of games.
that Rally mode in Underground was definitely taken from 2 Fast 2 Furious when they race the two Cuban guys for their Camaro & Challengers. really cool mode to have in a game.
Im glad you did the Juiced review in the end, the game is such an upgrade from its pc/ps2/xbox counterpart
I re visited a Midnight Club LA Remix, and I played through it all over again. it's a damn good game. Midnight Club games on the hand helds were pretty much second to none.
Pretty good port sucks I never got to finish it vs the console one
3:59 I already hear in mind Kuru's sentence "What is going on with this stupid shit?"
No wipeout section? Damn :(
Jokes aside, honest to god good video. Finally a list for my phone gaming experience
