Actually, the most terrifying thing about cranberry harvests is that wolf spiders live in the bushes before flooding, and are very bouent, which means you’ll be collecting delicious cranberries one minute and the next, 5 wolf spiders will be crawling up you to get away from the water and danger of drowning. As long as you’re calm, they won’t bite, but people with arachnophobia can’t do this job bc of it.

I remember going to visit my grandpas cranberry bog when I was little. I have a fear of spiders and he neglected to inform of the “bog spiders they have in there fields to take care of insects and unwanted visitors. But this was the time they flooded the fields and I dredged around in the water for a bit with him and about 12 spiders started crawling up my legs and onto my body. I was not happy and my grandpa was laughing his butt off

The spiders help with bugs, then they drown the fields, and the spiders try to find a place to climb so they don't drown, so the spiders climb up either you or your equipment
If you ever try to get a job at a cranberry field the first thing they ask “How are you with spiders?” Because they have hundreds of them for pest control. When they flood the field they will climb up you, and you aren’t supposed to hurt them. They want them to go back in the field when the waters gone. And I’m not kidding, it’s the first question they always ask.

there are giant spiders in the water to help protect the berries from bugs. one of the qualifications of having that job is not having an overwhelming fear of spiders
I have a respect for all jobs, a lot of interesting things sometimes come with those jobs like these. As a medical student, if I found out that in middle of schooling that I’d have to watch out for a spider of some kind, then my part time job is now a full time. *And knowing my luck there’ll just be more spiders.*
For those who dont understand when cranberrys are grown a lot of insects tend to ruin them but since chemicals are to harsh they instead release some wolfspiders cranbery picking has to be done in a sjort time so instead of picking by hand they flood the fields and pay u a good amount of money to help pick them but if ur intrested and ask about it the first thing they will ask is "are u afraid of spiders" hope this helped

@@CarySagady from what i have researched wolf spiders do live in cranberry bogs as a Natural pesticide, now of course there could be multiple answers to this, maybe some Bogs keep em around while others use different sorts of measurements against pests, or perhaps all the Websites that approve of the fact that wolf spiders live in cranberry bogs actually lied. From my current viewpoint i would guess that some farmers use the wolf spiders while others don't.
This type of farming is actually pretty scary, the first requirement to work at this is to not have arachnophobia, because in any second a big spider can just crawl up to your arm at Lightspeed while you are working.
There’s also an explanation for what’s hidden under the berries .The wolf spider helps keep the cranberries from rotting there’s at least hundreds of them in one bog,they tend to crawl onto the workers too.
The thing is scary about harvesting cranberries is the fact that there's always gonna be spiders on you and you have to stay calm and the thing that makes it worse. Is their wolf spiders
I use to work at Massachusetts cranberry bogs. When they flood the bogs to harvest the berries that's when the real horror comes. You'd see deer poop, countless spiders, snakes, other bugs all floating and trying to crawl on you. When we did dry harvest, we used a helicopter to lift up 3 stacked crates full of berries. Very heavy, good workout though and the boss always sucked, demanding us to work like slaves. Ocean Spray is full of racist employees as well lol
Fun fact about working in a cranberry field. You have to be used to spiders running into your overalls cause when you flood the field you flood their home
The scary thing is not the person under the water. It’s the amount of spiders you can find on the cranberries because some cranberry Farms will release thousands of spiders to kill off the pests when they flood the fields the spiders hang out and cling to anything they can get their hands on

I have a respect for all jobs, a lot of interesting things sometimes come with those jobs like these. As a medical student, if I found out that in middle of schooling that I’d have to watch out for a spider of some kind, then my part time job is now a full time.

For those who dont understand when cranberrys are grown a lot of insects tend to ruin them but since chemicals are to harsh they instead release some wolfspiders cranbery picking has to be done in a sjort time so instead of picking by hand they flood the fields and pay u a good amount of money to help pick them but if ur intrested and ask about it the first thing they will ask is "are u afraid of spiders" hope this helped

@@CarySagady from what i have researched wolf spiders do live in cranberry bogs as a Natural pesticide, now of course there could be multiple answers to this, maybe some Bogs keep em around while others use different sorts of measurements against pests, or perhaps all the Websites that approve of the fact that wolf spiders live in cranberry bogs actually lied. From my current viewpoint i would guess that some farmers use the wolf spiders while others don't.

This type of farming is actually pretty scary, the first requirement to work at this is to not have arachnophobia, because in any second a big spider can just crawl up to your arm at Lightspeed while you are working.
I'd be less scared of a human in there and more scared of the spiders in that water.

There’s also an explanation for what’s hidden under the berries .The wolf spider helps keep the cranberries from rotting there’s at least hundreds of them in one bog,they tend to crawl onto the workers too.

I use to work at Massachusetts cranberry bogs. When they flood the bogs to harvest the berries that's when the real horror comes. You'd see deer poop, countless spiders, snakes, other bugs all floating and trying to crawl on you. When we did dry harvest, we used a helicopter to lift up 3 stacked crates full of berries. Very heavy, good workout though and the boss always sucked, demanding us to work like slaves. Ocean Spray is full of racist employees as well lol
Fun fact about working in a cranberry field. You have to be used to spiders running into your overalls cause when you flood the field you flood their home

The scary thing is not the person under the water. It’s the amount of spiders you can find on the cranberries because some cranberry Farms will release thousands of spiders to kill off the pests when they flood the fields the spiders hang out and cling to anything they can get their hands on
