  • A video demonstrating how to replace a moulded plug.
    The reason to replace is moulded plug is to save you money having to buy a new appliance. There are many reasons you may need to do this is including broken/bent pins or frayed cables.
    This video is for guidance only. If you're not sure seek the help of a qualified electrician.
    I used a plug of an old extension lead I no longer needed. You can use the plug off an old appliance or buy a brand new one.
    You can pick one up from Screwfix for only £1 and these come ready fused. The link is at the bottom.
    I hope this video has helped you, any questions please feel free to ask.

    I found a new looking floor standing fan it was thrown away in a recycling bin because it had a fused plug and one of the pins in the plug was bent making it unusable, I took it home followed your video instructions and after the plug was changed the fan was fully working, what a great find for free, the owner didnt know you could just change the fused plug so the tossed it away wasting money. Great video, thank you. Laura in UK.

      Wow that's absolutely brilliant!! That's one of the negatives of a moulded plug. A lot of people think they can't be replaced and end up throwing away the item. I'm glad this has helped and rewarded you with a free fan 💨

    I haven't yet done this but maybe exposing too much or too little inner wire for a plug could be a thing, but I'll perhaps do roughly 2cm or 3cm. It can always be corrected anyway, repeating the cutting steps.

    • @thedoitalldad
      @thedoitalldad  Год назад +1

      Yeah that's something to play around with. If you have excess cable maybe have a little practice attempt first to see how much of each colour cable to expose 👍🏻

    The lead of my floor cleaner has become loose where it enters the moulded plug and the plug becomes hot when charging - I actually smelt burning plastic. Would it be ok in the first instance to just fit a new plug to see if that resolves the problem?

    Great vid! Quick question though, which wire goes to the live and which one goes to the neutral slot?

    • @thedoitalldad
      @thedoitalldad  10 месяцев назад

      Thanks, glad you found it useful. Depending on the wiring you have..
      (Old wiring) red = live. Black = Neutral
      (Current wiring) brown = live. Blue = Neutral.
      Hope this helps

    Hello, what do you do if the plug has three wires? I replaced plug on a dehumidifier, and on plugging it in a second time, it sparked and tripped the sockets in my kitchen. Any advice? Thank you!

    • @thedoitalldad
      @thedoitalldad  10 месяцев назад

      I'm assuming the 3rd wire is green and yellow? That's an earth wire so needs to go into the earth slot.

    What CAN go wrong even if everything is done correctly?
    I mean why DO people throw them away?
    My washing machine cones with this plug and I'll have to do what you did so I can feed thr wire through.

    Not a bad effort. But never strip a flex like that if you do use a knife the gently ring round the flex in the same way as you did the inner conductors point two strip the ends of the conductors longer than you need the twist and double over . Poin three that wire stripper throw it in the bin and get your self a pair of side cutters , there are two types available get the ones with two small holes in the cutting gores the makes a 1.5 and 2.5 and are for stripping the ends of the conductors. Also the neon screwdriver throw that in the bin as well they are dangerous if you stick that onto a live circuit you run a high risk of killing your self because the only thing between you and the purely gates is a small resistor and if that fails you will die. In the trade we call them widow makers .
    Sorry just trying to advise you. Yes I am a qualified electrician have been for thirty three years. Those moulded plugs should be banned as they are prone to overheating
