I laughed so hard when you started talking about not liking Mr. Wonderful just before Geoff started singing it. I knew he would change your mind.
You noticed the look Geoff gave Cesar when he shouted Kill the witch, but I don’t think you caught that it was an Easter egg reaction because Geoff played the sea witch in the Little Mermaid medley.
Great reaction. Geoff worked on this arrangement for years and it payed off.

The harmonies in this are absolutely gorgeous. Because I Knew You gives me chills every time.
But one of my favorite parts is when they start Good News. I love how Cesar goes up and then passes it off to Eli who goes right back down like they’re bookends.

I love seeing an actual Wicked fan’s reaction to this! Wicked is my favorite musical and Geoff slayed this arrangement (that took him years to make).
Rachel actually was an understudy for Wicked on Broadway, but for Glinda’s part.
Thanks for mentioning Layne’s stellar performance! He gets overlooked a lot for this performance because of all the vocals, but he crushed this!

Rachel was with the national touring company of Wicked where she understudied Glinda. I just LOVE how she hands off the high note run to Eli at the beginning of Dancing Through Life. Fun fact: Rachel actually had laryngitis on the day of the video shoot. Side Note: Jeff Goldblum is listed on IMDB as being cast as the Wizard in the upcoming film.
OMG! Laryngitis and she still performed with that much energy and emotion (Obviously the vocals were pre-recorded but STILL!) if i had laryngitis id be in bed! hahahaha
This is one of my favorite Geoff arrangements. He always does fantastic transitions, but I loved the way he was melding and blending tiny reprises of previous songs into the mix of the big numbers, as well as creating tempo shifts that kept me on the edge of my seat.
It really is a masterful arrangement! He is so talented!!
Something about their 'Dancing Through Life' arrangement gives me '90s Disney cartoon series theme' vibes, like Gummi Bears or Chip 'n Dale'.

I believe that Rachel has appeared in Wicked but not in this role. did you catch that cute look Cesar gave Geoff wheb singing Because I knew you? I can't remember whether you've done their Greatest Showman. It's another stonker.

I've never been disappointed in any of the host's reactions, but his reactions to songs that he knows and loves are a world apart. Emoni is an on-going friend of VoicePlay and Home Free from when she performed with them on the Sing-Off tour - she was part of the group that came second, and joined VP when Honey, who was in the competition with them, wasn't able to tour. I love her performance of The Bones with VP.

Lol, Cesar has more natural sass than most people could even know what to do with. 😄 And if I were to nominate Emoni for a musical, it would be a lesser-known one called 'Smoky Joe's Cafe.' It incorporates songs from Leiber and Stoller's catalogue (so includes bangers like 'Pearl's A Singer,' 'Some Cats Know,' 'Poison Ivy' and 'Stand By Me,') and she would totally SLAY in pretty much any of the female roles!

Oh, yes! This was already one of my favorite VP medleys, but I also still distinctly remember last October when I was on vacation and while looking for VP reactions came across your video being recommended, David. It's always fun to see anyone get blown away by that first time hearing/seeing VoicePlay, but it was extra enjoyable for it to be a lengthy reaction/analysis done by someone with actual music and musical theater experience. It was great to have someone with your background really appreciate and explain what was particularly wonderful about the arrangement and performance.

One thing you need to sneak onto your VP list sooner rather than later is Just Sing. It was done about 2 months into the US pandemic lockdown as a benefit, and is a collection of almost all the featured artists and past VP members. When you do watch it, definitely have the captions on!

Rachel would make an Incredible Elphaba. I would so pay to see that!!! Both of these ladies have their own personal style, and yet, when they blend their voices, they go to a whole new level of amazing. This is one of my favorite Broadway musicals of the last 20 years or so, if for no other reason than the music that it sent out into the world to challenge singers with. WOW!!! Voiceplay nailed it again!

So DJ...fellow Rent fan here as well. Had the honor to meet Jesse L. Martin who played Tom Collins in the original Broadway play and the movie as well. Such an amazing actor and so kind. I would pay to hear VoicePlay do a version of La Vie Boheme...that would be a rocker! They probably wouldn't but could you imagine. Hell I want them to do a Six medley for giggles lol

*However* , recognize that the show was *10 years ago* . Both VoicePlay and Home Free have grown tremendously in that time, and it does them both a disservice when people compare then's version against today's.

Wicked is my favorite Broadway play. I have yet to find any play to top it. If you haven't got it yet. They have a 20th edition of the Wicked soundtrack coming out on vinyl, and they even show that they are going to have it colored green.
Love this musical. My favorite musical of all time is Phantom, however I love the songs from Hair and cringe, Rocky Horror Picture Show. Nothing like seeing John Travolta in drag swinging about being a Sweet Transvestite from Transavia.

Its HIGH HIGH on my list for many reasons!
Don't hate me because I love Voice Play and all of their arrangements, productions, and and voices they draft for said productions. However, the best individual rendition I have found of "Defying Gravity" is the Stages Sessions version from Morissette Amon and the Pentatonix version of "Seasons of Love"(by far Kirstie's best, imho).
I will need to check those out!
I have to say, while I can understand the opinion "James Corden can't sing" I don't believe that James cannot sing in reality. I believe he purposefully embellishes and overplays himself, in much the same way Josh Gad does, for mere comedic relief. I mean you could almost throw Nathan Lane in there as well. All wonderfully talented singers, but they tend to over perform and sing in a comedic style rather than take themselves too seriously. It's kind of their mark or brand.
As I said though I understand, as I do tend to get annoyed at seeing James' overdramatized style whether it be on the Late Late show, Into the Woods, or Cats. He plays the same character, sings in the same flat tone, and the joke gets old really quick. But I know that some of it may not be his choice rather the choice of those behind the scenes asking for that type of character.
Very true and absolutely no hate to anyone who loves him! I just don't vibe with him and don't think he was the best choice for those roles :)
My least favorite VoicePlay video...there was hardly any of the guys in the medley at all
