Still true when I went 5 years ago. They had several meat free burgers.. I think the one I had was a paneer cutlet. also on the meat menu they used lamb instead of beef.
There is a completely vegetarian McDonalds restaurant in Amritsar, India. I ate there when I was in Amritsar ten years ago, but I've forgotten what the food was like 🤔
This is just fantastic. I'd absolutely love to see more should you decide to partake in "knockoff" American fast food joints in other places. Even if it's just a salad you're getting, I'm absolutely interested!! Thanks for sharing this with us, Jared. I hope everyone is doing well and having a great day!
Lest we laugh at countries like Algeria for doing this kind of thing, America did it too in the early days of burgers. New Jersey is still dotted with places called White [Something] that make onion-steamed sliders, riding on the coattails of White Castle. And every big city is going to have bootleg versions of any restaurant that has gained any kind of trendiness or popularity. Like, after the Seinfeld soup nazi episode, there were soup shops popping up all over New York with names like Soup Nutsy. The truth is, most human beings are not particularly original or creative, or are otherwise boxed in by social expectations even if they do have their own ideas. People just want to have what their friends and neighbors have, and can't imagine anything better or different, and there will be merchants who step in to fill that demand, merchants who themselves are risk-averse and unoriginal. It's how traditional crafts happened even before the rise of civilization, and it's how styles and fashions continue even to this day. Human nature.
Fun fact: there is no obesity in Algeria. Western (burgers) and Midle Eastern (shawarma) fast food are relatively new in Algeria, we cook our own food with fresh ingredients. Frozen and processed food doesn't exist in Algeria. It would be nice to try some actual Algerian fast food that you can't find anywhere else: algerian pizza (pizza carré, pizza couverte), coca, mhadjebs, Algerian grill, soufflés, Algerian sandwiches, garantita, Algerian ice cream (créponé) etc.
This is SO AWESOME! I LOVE that they stick apostrophes in random places, its hysterical! So cool that they just serve what they want, that dessert pizza looks delicious. Actually the laws changed, the 51% thing is no longer the case .... actually it is not 51% tax but it was 51% partenership so companies used to find an Algerian partener and Mcdonalds owns the land and it is impossible in Algeria.
I was in Algeria back in 1980. They didn't know much about hamburgers then. I ordered a hamburger in a restaurant in Oran, and they brought me a cooked beef patty with an egg on top, sunny side up.

I'm sure you'll reply eventually, however I decided to reply to myself first to give you some facts! the reasons why McDonald's isn't present here in Algeria is not because of the 51% law, although this law does really exist! The real reason is that the government wanted to supply this giant fast food chain with a local potato variety, but McDonald's refused because this white looking potatoes aren't good for French fries.. ( the reason why you won't find crispy McDonald's like French fries here ) instead McDonald's negotiated to bring the Russet potato variety, rent farming land and grow it here, then the government refused! That's the story in a nutshell and regarding the " Mc " phenomenon in Algeria's fast food branding it is a just a reference that the restaurant is indeed a " fast food restaurant " as you mentioned. Fun fact I don't live far from that Mc Pif thing haha.
Can I have a Big Mac? "We have an Obese Max." What about some Chicken Nuggets? "We got a Chicken Orbs." Man...no what about a Filet of Fish "I know this! You mean a Slice o Salmon."
I believe pizza isnt too unusual at McDonald's in other countries/ select regions because its thought of as "American" food and feels like a natural add to them. Definitely. *I* would have watched that 10-minute long video of Jared mukbanging that dessert pizza. Maybe some good B-channel content?
Thank you for visiting ore country it's a pleasure ❤
Years ago a friend pointed me at the McDonald’s India website. Apparently, at least then, each restaurant had a vegetarian and a meat kitchen, kept separate and supposedly very clean. Few menu items looked familiar.
Still true when I went 5 years ago. They had several meat free burgers.. I think the one I had was a paneer cutlet. also on the meat menu they used lamb instead of beef.
We haven't any true McDonald's in Algeria
There is a completely vegetarian McDonalds restaurant in Amritsar, India. I ate there when I was in Amritsar ten years ago, but I've forgotten what the food was like 🤔
My favorite kind of fruit
This is just fantastic. I'd absolutely love to see more should you decide to partake in "knockoff" American fast food joints in other places. Even if it's just a salad you're getting, I'm absolutely interested!! Thanks for sharing this with us, Jared. I hope everyone is doing well and having a great day!

What beautiful backgrounds when you’re outside!
Bootleg McDonald's sounds like a great name for a Garage Punk band.
Their first album could be named _Over Four Billion Puzzled: Who the Hell Are Bootleg McDonald's?!_
I love seeing these shops in other countries! cool video
There’s obesity in Algeria. Maybe under the global average tho

When you're back in the states, id LOVE to see you try and rank all the apples you can get in a (well stocked) grocery store... I recently tried an apple called Sugarbee and i literally cant stomach any other apple anymore. My supermarket only has it once a month if im lucky...
@Bloodred Morgue: Have you tried Pacific Rose or Green Dragon (aka Green Emerald)? Those two are my favorite apple varieties.
Always a pleasure to watch you enjoy foreign junk food in addition to all the foreign fruit. That’s really interesting about the fake McDonald’s everywhere.
I’m dying at “fast food mc bell” 😂😂😂😂😂
Hey there Jared,
I really enjoyed this episode the most....you have given us a clear eyed tour of this city in it's non Anerican culture.....its been fascinating and refreshing....thank you ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!

In Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 I encountered several knock-off McD’s restaurants such as McDoner’s, McMagic’s, McBurger, RaMburger, and KazBurger. There is even a burger place simply called DONALD’S in Almaty. LOL. I also saw K’FC (Kazakh Fried Chicken).

Actually the laws changed, the 51% thing is no longer the case .... actually it is not 51% tax but it was 51% partenership so companies used to find an Algerian partener and Mcdonalds owns the land and it is impossible in Algeria.
My man got himself a Selecto, he knows what's up !
Glad I got to try it. Hamoud is my number one Algerian soda though haha
wow that wonder-pizza looks so good. I want to try the La Cherri one
I loved this video so much. Amazing and fascinating!!
I was in Algeria back in 1980. They didn't know much about hamburgers then. I ordered a hamburger in a restaurant in Oran, and they brought me a cooked beef patty with an egg on top, sunny side up.
If you ordered grilled kefta you would have had something much more tastier than Burger :)
@@ALGERIEECONOMIE As a matter of fact, the best chocolate eclair I ever had was my first chocolate eclair, ordered at this stand in Oran at a resort where you could rent sailboats. 😊 My dad was part of the group of companies sent to build an long plant outside of Bethioua in the late seventies, and we had a few neighborhoods set up for us to live in. We'd frolic at the beaches shop at the marchés, etc.
Hahaha that's way back in the days.. I'm wondering whether you had any pictures taken for your trip to Algeria and whether you uploaded them on some platform?
I'd love to see the experience thru the pictures
I am just pissed off that there are no bootleg mascots.
They missed a golden opportunity to introduce Algiers' own Reynolds McMerc, Gram Ace, The Hambezzler, and Bird's-eye the Punctual Parrot.
That amount of PR investment would only make sense for a big chain. Also some Muslims believe mascots are not permissible, though I don't really know about the school of Islam in Algeria.
@commenter4898 Don't underestimate the potential of McMerc.
Someday, it will even surpass McDonald's.
@@commenter4898 Who said Mascots are not permitted? Mascots didn't exist in the time of the prophet. If you gonna pull fatwas out of your ass like that, go to KSA where you might at least get money for it.
@@Mutazili Statues and pictures of living things are haram. Some schools of Islam interpret that to mean that mascots of any living animal would also be prohibited.

Actually 200 DA is less than 1 dollar in the black market, because almost everyone exchange his money in the black market in Algeria. So a slice of pizza with a bottle of soda are less than 1 dollar.

Well as an algerian i'll say look for good rated clean restaurants and try, well you can stumble upon really good ones, or you can find average ones, we don't have like a specific one that has good food, it's all trial and error 😂
Aww.. I've been following you since 2017! I didn't know you'd ever visit here lol please try a fruit called " black thorn fruit " or نبق in Arabic! Please stay safe in my country.

I believe pizza isnt too unusual at McDonald's in other countries/ select regions because its thought of as "American" food and feels like a natural add to them.
