I get excited every time you upload a new video because it means I get to learn how to use unity in ways that wouldn't come to mind beforehand. Thank you very much for the videos, I look forward to seeing what you'll do next
It was but I'm having trouble making the arwing follow the track, It moves along but it doesn't follow it perfectly and I need help.(Edit)I figured it out, I had the track too wide LOL.
Awesome! I'd love to see an additional video on maybe adding a fork to the rail system. Allowing a user to choose an alternative path if that path exists. If they don't choose then they take the default.
This one's particularly impressive because you've pretty much got the foundations for a whole game right there, with one or two mechanics and some level design it could be ready to go. As a game design student spending weeks and weeks as a group trying to get even the most basic stuff to be functional, seeing this is like black magic.
Dude, these rail movement mechanics would be great for other scifi genre games, like an arcade style dino hunting game, or a multi-player mecha style Run and Gun. I might just do some prototyping with this.
Add an enemy wave, let the player shoot, combine with your Kingdom Hearts Shotlock tutorial and you basically got the mechanics for a Panzer Dragoon game :-) Thank you very much, awesome tutorial.
Your channel is extremely underrated. Fantastic work! I have worked as a Unity game dev for about 7 years now and have never once seen tutorials with this much polish and great content.
So I'm super late to this, but this was so helpful to me. I have been working on a Star Fox game in Unity for the past week, and I had accomplished a lot, but in a way much different from you. I was using translate to move my ship, and had my camera following behind my arwing, with the camera only copying the forward movement of the arwing (which Unity tracked well regardless of rotation), and it was working really well. After seeing this, I didn't even KNOW about how I could use the CameraToViewPort method to do the same thing but so much easier. I didn't even know about the cinemachine dolly. My plan was to simply set triggers in a level that would change the rotation of the camera target and force the arwing to follow a different path, but these solutions are outstanding. You're so helpful, thanks!
I was researching a few days ago, that there are not many games similar to Star Fox, at least for their motion mechanics. It's great to see your work, congratulations.
Simple, and straight to the point. Doesn't get bogged down in details, and allows us to figure it out on our own, but gives us a huge jumping point so we dont' go in blind. Thank you!
Wow, perfect timing; I've literally been working on something like this for my first Unity project! It's nice to know that I was on the right track, but man my progress has been slow, lol. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I'm begining a C# Programming course using unity and i am very excited because i really want when the course finishes to Do Stuff Like This. This channel helps me a lot because you give great ideas for making very Good video Games and we all apreciate That. Greetings from Colombia. ✌🏻👍🏻
you make it looks so simple, but you really are talented! you make these tutorials awesomely comprehensive, quick, and easy to follow, and you include and link everything you use. as someone just getting into game design as a hobby, you are an inspiration and a huge help!
Wow! I saw your Reddit post and expected this video to just showcase what you've made, but I am thoroughly impressed that it was a brief tutorial instead. We definitely need more people like you in the community. Thank you for your contribution!
Just stumbled upon your channel, and wanted to let you know it's really great. Thanks to your conceptual approach I was able to implementing/porting this starfox system to Godotengine (including several adjustments/adaptations due to engine differences)
This is seriously the best unity content on youtube for how much it inspires me to actually get shit done. Maybe it is too much work in addition to the videos itself, but have you thought about either a less edited "raw footage" of the process or even a written version of your process? You might even offer this as an additional patreon tier. I would gladly pay for stuff like that from you Either way, keep it up, this is amazing stuff
wow thats probably your best video yet! as someone with no experience in game development and watching this just for fun, this was very easy to follow and understand :)
I love these videos! Thanks a ton for these! One thing that I'd like to see you do is to tackle a UI system similar to that of the Destiny games, or No Man's Sky, with a gamepad cursor that users can hold the X/A button to interact with menu items.
I was so excited for this video but, there is not enough informations given. All I can do is look at your files and hope to understand the process. A huge loss of time when I would have just needed one or two more screenshots. I got stuck setting the Gizmos. It's not beginner-friendly but I wish it was. Thank for your time and effort making this video anyway. Cheers.
Hey Emerson! Currently everything on Mix and Jam is being made by myself (André)! It's very demanding but also a super fun challenge! I love working on it! :D
I've always wanted to make an EDM on-rails shooting game. And you put it out so elegantly, I'll need to dissect your source file, as I know very little about coding :3
I'm interested in the enemy A.I, would be much more fun. It could also be cool to have different rails to choose from like quick events, if you don't react quickly enough you get the default rail. And maybe it's too much but asking never hurts, what about the two-legged version of the ship? Would be awesome to do that too Ps:I've only watched three of your videos but I think it's enough to realize how much of an underrated channel yours is, keep up the good work, you've earned a new subscriber :D
Good job as usual, I always love your videos and I always come, watch them entirely and then always go to the comment section to suggest Arkham Knight combat system XD You are amazing dude, keep it up
And I just subscribed to your channel, seriously this is brilliant stuff. Any chance your have a video on the on foot and landmaster free roam mechanics of Star Fox Assault. With that knowledge people can make the ultimate Star Fox game.
True, you would have to implement an additional system that checks which node you are currently placed and move you to another track. With the Unity release of the Splines packages this can also be a quick fix, because splines have a much better "branch" system by default!
It's pretty simple. You just trigger the right animations depending on the key(s) pressed and change the player character's velocity as needed. Though it might be time-consuming to set up a system to ensure checking for things like proper key combinations or whether the player's in the air. Maybe a state machine would make it easier.
@@demetresaghliani9048 I was more interested in wall contact (like he's shown it in 2D in his video on Celeste's movement) detection and capping/maintaining velocity.
I've wanted this for 2 years now.
Star Fox clones coming in 3...2...1...
Why not ! Do a nice one ! :)

continually in awe at how talented you are at emulating these game mechanics in unity

Agreed !!
Omg. Using the Cinemachine dolly track for this was a stroke of genius.
It was but I'm having trouble making the arwing follow the track, It moves along but it doesn't follow it perfectly and I need help.(Edit)I figured it out, I had the track too wide LOL.
I would love to see a "sequel" to this video adding in shooting and basic (even static) enemies.
Yes I would too!
Dang dude, this is awesome! =D
An honor to hear that from you! I really really appreciate your content! ✨♥️
I realllly like that you don't stop when you are done with the core game mechanic, you take the extra step to polish it and make it look really good.
Awesome! I'd love to see an additional video on maybe adding a fork to the rail system. Allowing a user to choose an alternative path if that path exists. If they don't choose then they take the default.

This is probably my favorite video from you so far, the movement just looks absolutely stellar! Great job!
the Dolly Track is definitely a godsend. Saves on extra coding while being flexible enough for most on-rail projects.
Add an enemy wave, let the player shoot, combine with your Kingdom Hearts Shotlock tutorial and you basically got the mechanics for a Panzer Dragoon game :-) Thank you very much, awesome tutorial.

There is one design flaw in this setup, there's no way to seamlessly switch tracks to allow alternative paths.
