I was on safari for the first time in August this year. Although I grew up in uganda, I was very scared of wild animals. I can tell you, it was the best experience of my adult life. No video or photo gives you the feeling of being in nature. We were so close to the animals and saw locals walking past Lions, Buffalo and other animals without being attacked. I will definitely visit other game reserves.
What an annoying comment I’ve seen on millions of videos. You must not be knowing about the mount erebus disaster or even the recent Nepal airplane crash.
We only see the videos, where at least the memory card has survived (or it was a life stream...) And for most of the videos, even the camera man and not only the memory card has survived, but that's an unproven hypothesis, that this is true for MOST of the videos.
F*ck that ! I would never ride in an open vehicle like that. It only takes one mistake one time for you to end up dead. You can enjoy wildlife just as well in a vehicle that has bars, windows and roof.
I been in those open topped vehicles many times in Southern Africa. You are generally safe like the guy in the video says, certainly from predators like lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena.. However, big animals like elephant, rhino and buffalo can and do get agitated with vehicles. Elephants are probably the biggest threat. Still though, the guides are professionals and can tell the difference between genuinely irate elephants, ones who are mildly annoyed and one's who just approach a vehicle out of curiosity.
@@4exgold: I understand, and that’s all fine for you and others who want to ride with that risk. Doesn’t matter to me if it’s a 1 in 100 risk, a 1 in 1000, a 1 in 100,000, or in a million. I see zero point in doing it when a protective vehicle would serve the same purpose without the same level of risks. I never intend to be that one in 1 million, or whatever the odds are. I don’t intend to be that person, because I will not put myself in that spot.
@blake9747 it's just not the same safari experience when yr in an enclosed vehicle. When yr in 1 of those open-topped yr a lot higher off the ground and see more of the game. I'm sure you'd change yr mind if u go on a bush trip in SA or Botswana and actually see the setup and speak to the guides.👍
Think of it this way: a small wildcat wouldn’t dare attack a bird that’s perched on top of a Cape buffalo; a large animal that is extremely dangerous when even mildly irritated. But if the bird hops off the buffalo and flies down to the ground, *then* the cat knows it can pounce on it without risk of triggering a buffalo attack.
No I think you are all wrong. Including the guy in the video. Lions view humans as a major threat. They are almost extinct because of humans so it must be true. The only lions that are left alive are the ones that view humans as dangerous. But when humans are on vehicles, they really perceive it as one giant beast. Not a bunch of humans on a magic chariot. But a curious lion can easily figure things out. And making it obvious to the lions is a bad idea. Like standing up and waving or getting out of the vehicle and other dumb ideas.
@@sagnorm1863 Animals have a sense of smell you know. They can tell an organic object from an inorganic one, plus they live long enough to know and see how humans move and operate 🚕

I mean what do you expect 😂 your playing with fire getting even near these beast let alone leaving your window wide open for him to hop in, sure they’re cute to an extent but they’re still a predator at the end of the day, so I’d prefer not to become his lunch in process 😅
They attack people in normal cars it is strange. The lioness that killed that lady. Or the stupid old man who got out of the car to take pictures and was eaten in front of his wife and kids.
Lions also perceive trees as part of their natural environment. They also do not hunt trees. But if you climb the tree they would climb up and get you. They could also climb up the vehicle and get you. The real reason why they don't is because the car is actually scary and does not look like natural at all - it roars, it moves but to them it's more like a rock and there usually are more than one human on it. If you were a single man sitting in that open car while not moving you would be dead as soon as they acclimate to the strange object which is a car.
Maybe but if it was such a scary creature to them they wouldn't linger around it. Also, I saw a video of a cheetah getting inside one safari car. It smelled people, stayed for a minute and left.
Lions DO respect the park ranger, which is why they don’t hang out making campfires in the dry season… or the wet season. Never mind! Do what the ranger said.
Lions are a very small minority in their habitats these days as well. Their cubs already have a low survival rate, they also likely adapted to not attacking the vehicles because they indeed know it's not worth dying for and they can't catch it at full speed 😂.
@@iShiftIn2Turbo If thats the case, then some groups of lions in captivity could evolve to become domesticated over the next 5 to 10 decades. That is how house cats became domesticated. Not attacking the hand that feeds you is already a sign of domestication.
Also, Lion: Ouch! What just hit me is the hindquarter? Ah, ah, never mind. The grass is growing so fast all around me! What amazing sounds! The sun is smiling at me. Look at the humans floating by. I’m at one with the world.
I believe they don’t see it as one single large beast, they do see multiple bodies with heads and eyes on them, meaning they see many prey on a weird roller thingy that transports them everywhere. But you are right about the detaching from the “herd” part, if it is an easy meal, they’ll go for it’s so it only takes a sucker to stand up and implicate the rest. I also like to think that in the beginning, where they first introduced safari vehicles, the first generation lions tried to attack the humans on it but failed because the driver and guide would sense or see the preying start and would drive off before they could catch them. So maybe after multiple times of trying to hunt these people on the vehicles, they gave up because they’re too fast. Once each generation of newborn cubs begin, the babies start to notice that their parents are not going after the vehicles or expressing much interest in the people in it, hence they too just treat it as a passer-by. So after the passing of many generations, they kinda accepted it as visitors to that area. I also think the vehicle looks weird in an animal’s perspective, it doesn’t gallop, trot or run but rolls away and the humans do not look like they have lower bodies or fully standing bodies so I dunno, maybe looks less like a prey to tackle? Like sort of a weird prey, so why go for the weird prey when you can just go about hunting for the ones you usually hunt? These are just some stuff I randomly think about, of course these are just guesses, please don’t take them seriously. I’m telling a story not a fact 😅
...the fact is actually very easier than what you and they may state/guess/prove: lions simply are not interested in human's meat, as they are not in Hyens' or many others' after all...of course they may kill us if feel threatened (or also for some ravange issue)...but never seen us as a prey; I don't agree with the theory of 'large beast' because they hunt elephants as well which are enormously bigger, yet lions are brave enough to give it a try....well, if they are considered as the simbol of courage it should be for a valid reason I assume...
Also, I wonder if they discover that humans taste like crap and their strange 'fur' gets stuck in your throat. I imagine a lion gaging on a guys hat, thinking "Screw this. Humans are not worth it."
"Lions consider the safari vehicles as a large beast and doesn't attack it." Also lions: Attacks rhino, hippo and elephants far bigger than the "Safari Beast"
Safari tours actually "test" the reaction of lions before driving in with tourists if they engage with a new lion group or the lions move to a new area - this also ensure the lions feel somewhat less threatened by the safari jeeps.
@@CastleMclions are absolutely threatened by loud vehicles with large groups of ppl. In the same way most wolves won't attack/avoid groups of 3 or more adults bc its too risky. You ever wonder why lions rarely attack giraffes or hippos too? Same reasons, way too risky to waste energy or die trying

Her name was Katherine Chappell editor for Game of Thrones. I was curious after reading your response and did a Google search. Poor guy did suffer a heart attack but he survived. Sad but true story.
General behavior.. lions can and will hunt ANYTHING. If groups of lions act this way around elephants, hippos, or giraffes when they are too large to hunt, it is safe to assume that when they act this way towards our safari vehicles, it is the same reasoning.
@@jordonmartin8034I strongly disagree. They know you wear clothes, they know you hunt in pact and they know you use tools. They don't have good eyes to be that dumb. If I saw a man in a truck, would I bring a knife to fight him? They are not stupid and they also study your routine.
Because in nature they always single out their prey and go for the weakest if they can. They try to separate their prey from the group during a chase. There is a method to how they hunt. They never just attack a big group because it is dangerous. So it makes sense they would view a group of humans on a vehicle the same way. Plus the don't know a vehicle is just a machine powered by humans, for all they know it's just a big creature.
It's not that lions perceive the vehicles as part of their natural habitat, it's that lions aren't sure if the humans and vehicle are somehow ONE-- making their potential attack too much of a risk
Wrong, just saw a video in which a lion jumped into it while another lion stood outside of it. The tour guide just told the people to slowly exit the vehicle which they all did, no attack.
@@sharpthingsinspace9721 I'm still correct. That an instance occurs where a lion has attacked man and vehicle only means the lion(s) in that case determined the risk to be low or none.
@@brian7333 you claim that the lions see the vehicle and people as one and that is why they didn’t attack. I said that I know of a video that showed people exiting a vehicle when a lion jumped in. Another lion was outside the vehicle and ignored the people on the ground. You’re an idiot and this conversation is done.
Should mention that elephants are not lions and they WILL attack your vehicle if they feel threatened or during breeding season. When I worked in South Africa I was charged several times by elephants, but I always had an escape strategy. As for lions, partially true. Lions who have not encountered vehicles WILL investigate and I've had a couple of close calls when we were in non-Safari areas. In each case the lions investigated the vehicle and tried leaning on the windows but to no avail (despite their weight). They also bit the tires of my Landy which apparently is quite common.
Elephants will attack *anything* because they're used to being the biggest, baddest thing around and so can get away with it. What you're describing with lions is more them being "what's this?" It's kinda like how most shark "attacks" happen. They aren't attacking, they're curious and part of how they learn about new things is through their mouths.
@@brigidtheirish Well, usually they don't. Elephants obviously need to be treated with respect at all times, however there are particular times when they get nasty. One is during breeding season and when they have young. Elephants within large herds organize to protect their young. The outer perimeter is usually guarded by younger males who, for want of a better description, are frisky and bad tempered. They also don't like to be startled. I remember on one occasion driving around a blind corner to find an elephant in the road. She was extremely flustered and bumped the vehicle several times (we were in a slow reverse). It could've been much worse. I've also seen elephant get annoyed by flash photography. They do get used to humans, however they understand men-with-guns and in areas where there is significant poaching they are much more inclined to attack. I know African elephants really well but most of the Asian elephants I've met seem more adapted to humans and those treated well are actually quite social with humans - not so much with African elephants.
@@davidgapp1457 Yeah. My point was that elephants will attack anything if they feel threatened while lions won't attack something that has a good chance of hurting them unless *desperate.*

F*ck that ! I would never ride in an open vehicle like that. It only takes one mistake one time for you to end up dead. You can enjoy wildlife just as well in a vehicle that has bars, windows and roof.
Exactly my thoughts! Why take unnecessary risks? 😂
Just make it a tank and I just might take you up on the offer. 😅

I think they know it, they are just afraid of the group of humans together
Nah man, they are stupid otherwise why they can't evolve to be smart as us?

I like your theory😂😅
...the fact is actually very easier than what you and they may state/guess/prove: lions simply are not interested in human's meat, as they are not in Hyens' or many others' after all...of course they may kill us if feel threatened (or also for some ravange issue)...but never seen us as a prey; I don't agree with the theory of 'large beast' because they hunt elephants as well which are enormously bigger, yet lions are brave enough to give it a try....well, if they are considered as the simbol of courage it should be for a valid reason I assume...
so it's just like "they don't attack until theu decided to attack" ??
Would've be the same with Orcas??
Also, I wonder if they discover that humans taste like crap and their strange 'fur' gets stuck in your throat. I imagine a lion gaging on a guys hat, thinking "Screw this. Humans are not worth it."

Safari tours actually "test" the reaction of lions before driving in with tourists if they engage with a new lion group or the lions move to a new area - this also ensure the lions feel somewhat less threatened by the safari jeeps.

Because in nature they always single out their prey and go for the weakest if they can. They try to separate their prey from the group during a chase. There is a method to how they hunt. Everybody gangsta until someone gets up and detaches themselves from the 'large' beast'.
