But it got the Best Narrative Award when the whole game is just a basic revenge story? It has a story that says "killing is bad and won't fix anything" but forces you kill people anyway. It also got the Best Audio design for basic current generation third-person sounds and ambience, when the other nominees like Doom Eternal use their sound to increase the satisfaction of gameplay tenfold and prevents it from getting old. Furthermore, it got the best Game Direction Award even though it was just more of what we saw in TLOU1, when Ghosts of Tsushima and Hades are completely original, beautiful games. Basically, when a game wins 7 out of the 9 awards it was nominated for, especially when the other nominees did the criteria for said awards better, then it's rigged. Agreed. And Not here to hate or anything. I love Joe and the show. Been a fan since the beginning. But he can not be more wrong about TLoU2. You can see in his playthroughs. Joe went in this game with a closed mind and came out the same. Maybe, if he had not spoiled the game to himself before release or if he had gone in with a little bit of an open mind, i am sure his opinion on the game would have been different. This game is nothing like the Last Jedi or GoT. I still hate b9th of them passionately. At least you're the most honest DOOM Eternal fanboy. Eternal is honestly just another run of the mill generic action FPS with dumbass platforming from a Mario or Donkey Kong game. It's a slightly faster version of DOOM 2016 with worse graphics and more cartoony visuals and has worse multiplayer. I can't remember a single story plot or beat from Eternal other than "You go to Hell". The only character that's memorable in Eternal is that man with the glasses whose a DOOMSLAYER fan and he was funny and cool. Now The Last of Us Part 2 as much as I hate that game I can remember literally everything, both the good and bad because it was entertaining and dramatic. It sure as fuck ain't no masterpiece but it sure is a lot deeper than "Go from Point A to Point B and kill demons". The violence and blood and gore is way more graphic and realistic and makes Eternal's look like pussy shit. The Last of Us Part 2 is one of the most violent games I've ever seen. It reminds me of the realistic violent and gore from Max Payne 3. DOOM Eternal feels so run of the mill like every other power fantasy all the Halo games while The Last of Us Part 2 has you also playing as the opposing enemy. This is a concept done rarely but The Last of Us Part 2 is a much more interesting game than DOOM 2016 1.5 and well frankly you can kill dogs in the most grotesque ways possible.

Not really dude, the gaming community is just too big and most of it is not very vocal. That award only represents the opinion of the specific community that visits that site and votes on it. For example, the golden joystick award's goty is also decided with the votes of the community and tlou2 won there while it lost to Tsushima on here so it really isn't that easy. Half of the people who play video games don't even know these awards exist or just don't care so nothing really represents the whole community's voice.

And at the same time, after a hard day at work I may prefer a "simple" game with a clear goal without complex stuff, like lets say... Doom Eternal - here's some guns, shoot everything that moves, and have fun doing it. I do agree with the core idea of your comment and i'll expand upon it - I wish more AAA titles would focus on using gameplay to tell the story and advance it. The first TLOU game had some heart breaking moments but overall I think it's overrated. It didn't do anything special with gameplay and it was predictable. Story was ok. There are some games that use gameplay to tell, or advance the story. I think Silent Hill 2 does that really well, plus the story imo hits much harder than the first TLOU game ever did.

I have to agree, Last of Us didn't deserve GOTY. I didn't like its story direction, its more - less repetitive and boring combat, and the character decisions. Doom Eternal had much better gameplay, story, and all in all it was a way more fun to enjoy. Same with Ghost of Tsushima, and even Final Fantasy. My personal GOTY was Doom Eternal, but I understand why Ghost of Tsushima got player's choice. The Gaming community should be the only ones deciding who wins Game of the Year. Not game judges or journalist, no matter what game wins. I understand that these Game Awards are not to be taken seriously, however, Game of the Year awards are about honoring the greatest games of that year, specifically chosen by the gamers who have played or watched them. But it got the Best Narrative Award when the whole game is just a basic revenge story? It has a story that says "killing is bad and won't fix anything" but forces you kill people anyway. It also got the Best Audio design for basic current generation third-person sounds and ambience, when the other nominees like Doom Eternal use their sound to increase the satisfaction of gameplay tenfold and prevents it from getting old. Furthermore, it got the best Game Direction Award even though it was just more of what we saw in TLOU1, when Ghosts of Tsushima and Hades are completely original, beautiful games.
Basically, when a game wins 7 out of the 9 awards it was nominated for, especially when the other nominees did the criteria for said awards better, then it's rigged. People have been saying that the Game Awards pick one game to shill for each year and I don't think that's fair. I mean, just imagine if Doom Eternal won the Best Narrative Award, even though it hardly has one. That's the unfairness I'm talking about.
Even without the stupid plot and lousy storytelling in The Last of Us 2, Naughty Dog does not deserve to be rewarded for how they treated their employees and their fans.

Both games were the most impressive looking games for the consoles they were released on and possibly for each generation.

You can see in his playthroughs. Joe went in this game with a closed mind and came out the same. At least you're the most honest DOOM Eternal fanboy. Eternal is honestly just another run of the mill generic action FPS with dumbass platforming from a Mario or Donkey Kong game. It's a slightly faster version of DOOM 2016 with worse graphics and more cartoony visuals and has worse multiplayer. I can't remember a single story plot or beat from Eternal other than "You go to Hell". The only character that's memorable in Eternal is that man with the glasses whose a DOOMSLAYER fan and he was funny and cool. Now The Last of Us Part 2 as much as I hate that game I can remember literally everything, both the good and bad because it was entertaining and dramatic. It sure as fuck ain't no masterpiece but it sure is a lot deeper than "Go from Point A to Point B and kill demons". The violence and blood and gore is way more graphic and realistic and makes Eternal's look like pussy shit. The Last of Us Part 2 is one of the most violent games I've ever seen. It reminds me of the realistic violent and gore from Max Payne 3. DOOM Eternal feels so run of the mill like every other power fantasy all the Halo games while The Last of Us Part 2 has you also playing as the opposing enemy. This is a concept done rarely but The Last of Us Part 2 is a much more interesting game than DOOM 2016 1.5 and well frankly you can kill dogs in the most grotesque ways possible.

I just can't this was so sad. TLOUS 2 beats DOOM Eternal in audio, Abby beat Jin from Ghost of Tsushima, and then they got GOTY. Yea, one of the most divisive games of the last generation beat beloved games with near-universal praise.

The saddest part of this story is Nolan's speech before the award.. he praises the fact games are becoming a "storytelling" medium.. you know something? Games were always a great medium on their own before all this wave of casual oriented, press 'circle' to jump, 'give me a story', pretentious journalism, 'games are art' crap that is ruining our industry with a lot of low self steem snobs that need some movie director to praise their hobby just to feel good with theirselves. I say no, games dont need to focus on story, on quick time events, on 'mature' content, etc. To be great.. the main focus of videogames is gameplay, and this industry filled with remakes needs innovation in gameplay.. games will never become art if their focus is 'story'.. they need to focus on gameplay, just like music focus on notes and silence, just like dance focus on body movement, just like painting focus on shape and color.. what do games should focus on? Take your damn controller and start to appreciate the challenge in every single step, the balance in difficulty..i mean, come on Sony, stop doing the same third person generic shooter with seudo rpg looting crap.. do something innovative in gameplay.. thats the saddest part of this story.. there is a market and they know how to approach you.. telling your hobby is a 'mature' art and delivering the same gameplay from 10 years ago.. its like they put Nolan there to make you feel good like he was legitimazing gaming because they are now 'more story driven'.. give me a break Nolan.. games dont need that pretentious crap.. games were always cool and we dont need this snobbery to appreciate them or enjoy them..

And at the same time, after a hard day at work I may prefer a "simple" game with a clear goal without complex stuff, like lets say... Doom Eternal - here's some guns, shoot everything that moves, and have fun doing it.
I do agree with the core idea of your comment and i'll expand upon it - I wish more AAA titles would focus on using gameplay to tell the story and advance it.
The first TLOU game had some heart breaking moments but overall I think it's overrated. It didn't do anything special with gameplay and it was predictable. Story was ok.
There are some games that use gameplay to tell, or advance the story. I think Silent Hill 2 does that really well, plus the story imo hits much harder than the first TLOU game ever did.

I have to agree, Last of Us didn't deserve GOTY. I didn't like its story direction, its more - less repetitive and boring combat, and the character decisions. Doom Eternal had much better gameplay, story, and all in all it was a way more fun to enjoy. Same with Ghost of Tsushima, and even Final Fantasy. My personal GOTY was Doom Eternal, but I understand why Ghost of Tsushima got player's choice. The Gaming community should be the only ones deciding who wins Game of the Year. Not game judges or journalist, no matter what game wins. I understand that these Game Awards are not to be taken seriously, however, Game of the Year awards are about honoring the greatest games of that year, specifically chosen by the gamers who have played or watched them. I think its sad and pathetic that we have even gotten to this point in award shows... They have lost all my respect.
The only real competition TLOU2 had for GOTY was Hades. All the other games you mentioned don't come close, especially not in terms of story.
