HISTORY
Soho, a vibrant district in the heart of London, has a rich and diverse history. Originally, it was open farmland until the 16th century when it began to develop into an aristocratic area with grand townhouses. The name "Soho" itself is believed to come from an old hunting call used in the area during the 1500s, when it was a popular hunting ground.
In the 17th century, Soho became a refuge for immigrants, especially French Huguenots fleeing religious persecution. They brought with them skills in weaving, and the area became known for its textile industry. Over time, Soho evolved into a multicultural hub, attracting waves of immigrants from Italy, Greece, and China, contributing to the area's eclectic culture.
By the 19th century, Soho had gained a reputation for its nightlife, with theatres, music halls, and brothels flourishing. In the early 20th century, it became the center of London’s bohemian and artistic community, attracting writers, musicians, and artists. This creative energy helped transform Soho into the entertainment and cultural hub it remains today, known for its clubs, restaurants, and music venues.
Notably, in the 1950s and 60s, Soho became the birthplace of the British rock and roll scene, with iconic venues like the Marquee Club hosting early performances from bands like The Rolling Stones and The Who.
Today, Soho retains its vibrant, eclectic character, blending historical charm with modern influences. Its narrow streets and hidden alleys still tell the story of its colorful past, from its aristocratic beginnings to its bohemian, multicultural present.
