This product is indeed made in Czech Republic for the Slovak market, since "Fresh" is a Slovak grocery store chain. Although Czechs have an identical spread called "bůčková pomazánka" which is essentially the same thing. The name "bôčiková nátierka" literally means "(pork) belly spread" and it's a traditional every-day breakfast spread, popular especially in Slovakia and Czech Republic. We usually enjoy it for breakfast on a slice of sourdough bread or a toast with a side of gherkins, sliced tomatoes or sliced onions. The pronunciation is the tricky part, though. The circumflex over the letter "o" turns it into a diphthong, which combines vowels "u" and "o" in that order into a single sound and makes it sound like an inverted pronunciation of the letter "o" in English - /uo/. You're using your can opener the right way. In many places in America there are can openers that look similar to your white handled one, and they do open from the sides. Those can openers are not the same kind as you have. Those are ones built specifically to be used in both ways. Yes you CAN use the opener any way you choose. Side note, thank you for showing me you using a can opener on pull tabs, never thought to do that. I hate the back splash on ravioli in a can.
I've never had one of those mechanical can openers, just the basic ones, so I generally appreciate cans having a pull tab. Usually my biggest issue with them is that I can't just pull the thing outright without first using a knife or something to pull it out lol.
It's easy to get stuck in the rut of thinking that there is only one way of accomplishing a task such as opening a can. Keeping an open mind to alternatives is healthy and can possibly lead to finding a better way of doing something. If we could only apply this logic to so many other things, the world might be a better place. The look and your description of this particular product reminds me of German teewurst in a can.
Mike and the AtomSmashers, There's a hilarious W.C.Fields skit where he's going to open a can of tomatoes with an axe. He says before he does it, This is how we did it in the Army, after getting tomato juice everywhere he says "It must have been the Navy" (this is an adlib not a direct quote) 🤣 I was looking for more of the Czech items from the box you were sent, but the pate looked lovely and the Poles are lots of fun too. I was reminded of you the other day as I opened a ring-pull tin of "skinless and boneless sardines in chilli oil". Yes, right at the end my jumper was splashed with sardine-flavoured chilli oil!
I recently bought a can opener made by Kuhn Rikon that separates the lid from the can without leaving any sharp edges, and it works really well. They call it the "Auto SAFETY LIDLIFTER". Highly recommended.
Every one of your videos gets a like from me. When you said paprika I thought you might like to know about our paprika pepper plant. I use a stick of dynamite to open cans. It's very quick but not quite efficient. The neighborhood sometimes complains about the noise but usually it keeps them from asking about borrowing tools or other things so that's an additional bonus.
The Czech language does not even have the "Ô" symbol. But they have the "Ů", which the Slovak language misses. You can pronaunce ô as uo. Bôčik = Buotchik or Buotschik.
All these people saying "you need to use the can opener on the SIDE not the top" all saw one Facebook post saying that and without trying or checking themselves, they spread it along in utter ignorance. And yet it's still here annoying people.
Your can opener does work great once you finger out how it catches the can lid. Maybe they have a video you can watch? Funny video thanks for the laughs! Looking forward to the next one.
I watched several videos of can openers of identical design to this one (different handle only) and they seem to grab the rim of the can in a way this one simply does not. I think it's faulty (I returned it already)
Bummer I had one and really liked it mainly if the can was dusty on top. Plus you can put the lid back on. Set it in the fridge to eat the rest an other day.

The people telling you that you're using the tin opener incorrectly, are probably the sort of people who never use tinned food anyway - or if they do, they use an electric tin opener. I still use an old 'Stab and Rip' opener. They are weirdly satisfying to use.
Hey, don't worry about the Lame-Os that whine about the can opener. I don't like getting sprayed with the contents either. The other can opener should have some instructions. I couldn't really tell what orientation it needed to be for it to work. I just use a 'regular' can opener --- like the one you used to open the can. The contents actually did look pretty good. Nice healthy lunch too. Was that rye bread?

My grandmother eats everything on toast or at least has it on the side. One of her favorite dishes is either baked beans or white beans and toast. I think it's a cultural phenomenon from hard times like World War and the Great Depression and it just stuck around more places than others. Without beans and toast, my gram would have had many a hungry night because she grew up in poverty. Now that symbol of hard times has become a comfort food for many people, including for her
You're just doing everything wrong. 🤣 Using the can opener wrong, opening the tin wrong, pronouncing it wrong, calling Slovak food Czech, putting it on the wrong type of bread product, not offering to help release the funds of the dead Nigerian prince... WRONG WRONG WRONG! 😜 I think I have to try some of this. Is it a typical polish shop item or one that specially had Slovak food too?
This product came from a shop that is mostly Polish, but caters a small amount for other nationalities too - including Hungary, Romania, Czech, Slovak, Russia and others. Pork pate seems to be popular in many of these cuisines - they each have slightly different ways of doing it - for example, Polish and Hungarian versions often include paprika - I really enjoy exploring it all
Alistair Brugsch LOL, I was thinking of writing something like this too and ending it with something like: See?! That's exactly why in the last 2mos or so your channel has only gained 100k¹ or so new subs, doubling in size! 😁 ¹ Per comment section on another video in which 2mos ago someone recorded sub count as just over 100k, 2wks ago someone else recorded as 215k & today I threw in my 2¢ with a date: 218k on 09/30/19...just bc I find it fun to see how fast a channel grows sometimes =) EDIT: upon re-reading "my 2¢" makes 0¢ but you know what I mean lol
You need to use the new opener from the top down and not from the side like you tried. Your turning "crank" should be parallel with the top of the can. Hope this helps.
If you just pull the tab a bit open. (Not breaking through the lid.). And then use the can opener.. The tab makes it easier to lift out the lid. ;) So it serves a good purpose. Even for people who prefer can opener.
My favorite type of can opener is the kind that looks like a bird's toe, and punches triangular holes into the top of the can; It's useless for solids and pastes, but for liquids, it turns the can into a convenient dispenser with a pour spout.
Why I prefer a can opener: 1) There is no rim around the can. 2) Sauce does not spray everywhere. 3) No RAZOR sharp edge to cut yourself on. (or that of your children) 4) Less finger strength required. (Not everybody is like you) 5) Not everybody has two hands, amputee's need a dedicated can opener machine or an affixed device. 6) I don't have to justify anything, if I want to use a can opener I'll use a fking can opener, what are you going do? Dislike my comment? Write a toxic reply?
dont even justify it - no one should care about your habits. youre a free human, do what you want, man. im planing to use openers myself more often in the future just because of atomic shrimp.
One thing you could maybe do is pop the tab (so it is perpendicular to the lid), then use the can opener. That would make it easier to grab. Not sure if that would leave any lip at the area near the tab though.
My reason for not liking can openers that cut around the outside of a can is......... Tuna. When you cut the lid on the inside perimeter of a can you can then press that lid down and squeeze out the excess water or oil from the tuna tin. It bloody annoys me when I use a can opener that cuts the exterior diameter and I can't do that same thing. It's a small bugbear that becomes annoying only when opening cans of tuna
In regards to the opener, I have one that cuts the side from Wenco, it has a scissor like design to 'catch' the can so it doesn't slip like the one you have. I also use it instead of the pull tab lol. It's like ~14 quid on amazon.
Shrimp, some people will find something to complain about, be it the way you open a can or the way you talk, that's just what they do. Don't let it annoy you, just ignore them trolls.
Something else weird I noticed you got that can opener at TK Maxx we have a store here in the States called TJ Maxx. I wonder if their own by the same people and if so why the slight difference in name?
I use those side of the rim can openers, but mine is 2 pieces you open the handle and it will bite it onto the edge. Helps you pop the top you've made off when yorue done cause its locked on.
The moment you opened that can, the color made me think it was Puerto Rican sandwich spread. Basically just lunch meat, two types of cheese and pimentos blended and spread on bread. It’s delicious, but based on the list of ingredients you shared, it’s absolutely not as bold as what you ate...
Funnily enough, after trying many types of can openers over the years, I've settled with buying a Tesco value 50p version and replacing it every 6 months!
Can opener controversy! Anyway you have changed my view of pull tabs on cans. I use to think of them as the main way to open a can that had one. Now I view them as a secondary or emergency back up way of opening a can when a can opener is not available or the can opener you have is of poor quality. There are many can openers of poor quality. I've seen you use three that functioned either very poorly or not at all. I've know people that have bought and discarded a surprising number of broken can openers. So don't take having a good reliable can opener for granted.
Just found your channel. What an incredibly lovely voice you have. I must know, were you serious about bread in a can? Is that really a thing and if so, why??
Unbelievable how many times you have to explain the pull tab/can opener bit...haha. I have always used my can opener the same way you do...so it seems a bit odd to use it the way others suggested. To each their own...at least I hope we can maintain that.
Not sure if anybody else said this already, but the new can opener you got is a special type thats really unintuitive to use. Apparently it doesnt exactly cut through metal but instead pushes/folds the can open. I couldnt explain how exactly you use it, but all I know is that apparently most people need a guide or tutorial in order to use these correctly. You might not know them because they never exactly cought on, even if in theory they might be better than normal can openers. but the fact that these are so unintuitive to use and that most people are just happy with the ones that cut through metal was enough to have them basically just be a "specialty" type of can opener instead of the "new norm".
If your new opener is supposed to cut the sides of the can, shouldnt you use it at a 90 degree angle from the regular way? Just a thought here. The wheel still seemed to be at the regular point on the can to me.
The best can opener ever (by my lights) was the Ekco Miracle. They’re not made any more but copies of extremely variable quality are, varying from almost as good as the original to nearly useless. Some people claim that the tight grip the user needs to maintain makes them unusable, and as my arthritis gets worse I might someday agree. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one used in a RUclips video.
Also for another reason to not use the ring pull... I remember as a kid spending an entire night at A&E while my dad got stitches in his hand when a ring pull lid opened badly and gashed open the palm of his hand...
You can't use the new version of the can opener on a pull top can, not because you are not allowed to, but because the can opener isn't designed to fit on those kind of can tops.
I've butchered so many can openers over the years, in different European countries. It seems no two country has the same time of can closure at the rim or lip of the can; different depths, widths of metal, etc. My record was destroying all four can openers I possessed on a tin of white asparagus in Madrid last year. Ring pulls any day for me!
Yay, now you have a can opener and a can't opener👍👍

I just watched a 12 minute commercial to watch this video, that’s the most/least I can do to support this awesome channel.
Keep doing whatever the Gehenna you feel like. You can always take the axe to all those gadgets that didn't work. Jim OAXACA
We grow the beautiful red paprika peppers and can eat them like normal peppers or throw them in a cardboard box and forget about them for a year. Open the box and they look like perfect red peppers made of plastic. We grind them into paprika powder and use them in cooking. So easy.
@Born Again Torinos, Thank you for this! I’ve taken a screenshot of your comment so I can try this myself :)
@@rubysparkes I'm so glad. My wife also makes Spam from scratch and home made bacon as well as pastrami. I'm a blessed husband. 8^)
I am from Slovakia and this is my favourite bread spread ! . I am also really surprised that someone outside of Slovakia or Czech republic tried it :D Thank you !
i never get bored of his can opener vs. pull tab speech
Thanks for explaining, I looked through maybe 30+ can vids and you just said "you know why" or something along those lines. I had to ask in a comment a while back, but nice seeing you explain it.
Been watching you for a couple months and I can’t get enough off them! Not just weird cans but the content you bring to the channel its great work! The stuff you build your cooking videos and obviously weird stuff in a can. just watched rabbit departing the station you must of missed it by a hare shame you couldn’t *hop* on, I’m done I’ll get my cost.
I would love to sponsor you would you consider setting up a patron? You do a great service for us and for basically free but I would love to be able to help more with videos projects or cans across the world to buy or anything you might find interesting.
Hope you see this and would love a response.
Never stop always entertained and interesting even when you said type to getting it open not a chance you talking is one of the favourite parts.
I'm resisting setting up Patreon (and turning away sponsorship) at the moment - I just want to make content without cashing in too much on the audience. I appreciate the idea though
Atomic Shrimp I really appreciate the response and how honest it is, I wish you the brightest future and I’ll always be watching and looking forward to the next upload. I do hope to be able to contribute to the work you put into theses videos.
I love those types of paté. I have bought a few similar to that. In fact, I have a few polish ones in my truck with some biscuits for a snack.
I'm with you on using a can opener ...the amount of splattered t shirts over the years ...also you're making me hungy...I have the bloomin norovirus and haven't eaten for 3 days ......hungy.....also just noticed the sign "I can if I want to" ...lol
Having watched enough of your videos to know your choice in shirts I can imagine a few spots of sauce sprayed from the lid just merging into the colour scheme to add to the splendour 😆🤣😁👍
Bôčiková nátierka...I believe that product is a sandwich spread, looks absolutely divine.
I have never used a can opener and the whole prospect is very interesting to me. It much more fun too I'd say!
I’ve always thought using a can opener on the pull tab cans was a really good idea once you explained it!!
Just say OK to people telling you you're opening cans wrong
This episode: Weird stuff in a can opener.
If I recall correctly, that new can opener IS supposed to be used on the side of the can. They still suck, though.
Set it in the fridge to eat the rest an other day.
whenever i ask myself why there is war in this world, i remember that people already get angered by the way others open a can. (ب_ب)
When aliens come to Earth...they'll take one look at us, shake their heads, say "Nope", and drive their flying saucers right back to their home planet!
Don't you love haters!? 😛
I love your channel, it's so eclectic and interesting. I started watching due to your scam baiting vids, and this video has got me hooked. *Subscribed* keep 'em coming!
You said it is from Czech Republic, but phrase "bôčiková nátierka" is Slovak.
That can said it was made in the Czech Republic though
Mate, I love your content.
Tips from a freelance film maker (creative opinion)
Just open your cans the way you do, don't waste time being upset about the ring pull/can opener.
Try a wider shot (you can fit more in) add a few close ups do what you can with what you have) be dramatic with it I guess
Get more foods from over seas, it can be something to look for, it's weird but good right?
And
Everyday once a day, give yourself a present, don't plan it, just don't wait for it, just let it happen.
All the best big man

I don't like pull tabs, either. They're actually harder for me to open than just using an old-fashioned can opener.
Now that symbol of hard times has become a comfort food for many people, including for her
Hell yeah NEW CAN OPENER HYPE!
Damn it
That looks delicious, I’m going to pop in to my local polish store tomorrow. I hope they have it. X
I think I have to try some of this.

LOL, I was thinking of writing something like this too and ending it with something like: See?! That's exactly why in the last 2mos or so your channel has only gained 100k¹ or so new subs, doubling in size! 😁
¹ Per comment section on another video in which 2mos ago someone recorded sub count as just over 100k, 2wks ago someone else recorded as 215k & today I threw in my 2¢ with a date: 218k on 09/30/19...just bc I find it fun to see how fast a channel grows sometimes =)
EDIT: upon re-reading "my 2¢" makes 0¢ but you know what I mean lol
@@AtomicShrimp I believe it's mandated by law that all Hungarian food products must contain at least some amount of paprika 😁
Not complaining.
You need to use the new opener from the top down and not from the side like you tried. Your turning "crank" should be parallel with the top of the can. Hope this helps.
Can't tell if serious
If you just pull the tab a bit open. (Not breaking through the lid.). And then use the can opener.. The tab makes it easier to lift out the lid. ;)
So it serves a good purpose. Even for people who prefer can opener.
I wonder if the failed can opener was upside down 🤔 there seemed to be a bit that sticks out that maybe was causing the misalignment?
My favorite type of can opener is the kind that looks like a bird's toe, and punches triangular holes into the top of the can; It's useless for solids and pastes, but for liquids, it turns the can into a convenient dispenser with a pour spout.
I’m a convert. Have ordered a rimcutting can opener from amazon this morning! Halleluja! No more splatter... 😎😎🥇🥇
Why I prefer a can opener:
1) There is no rim around the can.
2) Sauce does not spray everywhere.
3) No RAZOR sharp edge to cut yourself on. (or that of your children)
4) Less finger strength required. (Not everybody is like you)
5) Not everybody has two hands, amputee's need a dedicated can opener machine or an affixed device.
*toxic reply*
I'm going to start using can openers to open cans of drink.
One thing you could maybe do is pop the tab (so it is perpendicular to the lid), then use the can opener. That would make it easier to grab. Not sure if that would leave any lip at the area near the tab though.
I'm addicted to these can videos. Love em ty atomic shrimp.
Maybe you should host a Pull-tab survivor support group. PTSD ( pull tab stress disorder ) is a serious issue.
That's fking brilliant, have a like.
Intro is always so soothing.
In regards to the opener, I have one that cuts the side from Wenco, it has a scissor like design to 'catch' the can so it doesn't slip like the one you have. I also use it instead of the pull tab lol. It's like ~14 quid on amazon.
The lunch looked lovely. I could feel your disappointment in that fraud of a can opener .
Yeah, same parent company (TJX), but different trading name here, to avoid confusion with an existing store chain named T J Hughes
I always eat pate on bread with butter and optional mustard and hot sweet coco (made with milk) yum! (mniam!) greetings from Poland :)
It’s delicious, but based on the list of ingredients you shared, it’s absolutely not as bold as what you ate...
tbh it looks like its pretty satisfying opening cans with that first can opener, I would have opened all my food with it, even if its not in a can.
We need an atomic shrimp T-shirt that just has a pull tab with one of those [NO] marks over it.
Funnily enough, after trying many types of can openers over the years, I've settled with buying a Tesco value 50p version and replacing it every 6 months!
Every can opener you slam through will outlive your grandchildren.
@@broshmosh Luckily steel is recyclable
I have one of those 5 pound can openers but it works and I love it.
"What a disappoint"
Look you dont need to describe us like that

Can opener controversy!
Anyway you have changed my view of pull tabs on cans. I use to think of them as the main way to open a can that had one. Now I view them as a secondary or emergency back up way of opening a can when a can opener is not available or the can opener you have is of poor quality. There are many can openers of poor quality. I've seen you use three that functioned either very poorly or not at all. I've know people that have bought and discarded a surprising number of broken can openers. So don't take having a good reliable can opener for granted.
Over 4 min just on the opening, thank goodness video turned good near the end.
I don't see it subsiding any time soon - I guess it's going to be the running joke for this series
Ahhh back to my favourite internet series
Too right having everything on toast...curry on toast and vinegar on toast being 2 of my favourites 😊😊😊
No, that's the correct orientation - it just didn't work
The best can opener ever (by my lights) was the Ekco Miracle.
I don't know about Czech but usually on slavic languages the č is pronounced a bit like "tsh" (t plus the "sh" in fish)
Also for another reason to not use the ring pull... I remember as a kid spending an entire night at A&E while my dad got stitches in his hand when a ring pull lid opened badly and gashed open the palm of his hand...
Actually,it would have been a great can-didate for WSIAC... It was marinaded octopus! 🐙
I've got a can opener like that. Works flawlessly. It is a more expensive Zwilling one though.
You can't use the new version of the can opener on a pull top can, not because you are not allowed to, but because the can opener isn't designed to fit on those kind of can tops.
Thanks for linking to the manufacturer's video, I had no idea such things existed
So anyway, why aren't you using the can opener with a magnet?
I have this one that lacks the magnet (it was a wedding present, 27 years ago). I might make a magnet accessory for it one day...
Were there instructions on the cardboard that the opener was attached to?
Yes - there's also a photo of the thing being used (visible in this video)
