I played DayZ like 10 years ago on cracked servers with a couple of friends every day after school and most of our time would be spent on running from town to town (Electro and Cherno if I remember correctly) to loot absolutely NOTHING and then we got into a fight with another group once a day if we were lucky. That is if climbing a ladder didn't randomly kill one of us. It was truly an amazing experience
If I ever shot you climbing up a ladder.... I am not sorry I waited 3 hours and you were the only guy to climb up in that time I needed more human meat.

Honestly, the Workshop is the only reason this game is still going. But the creator of the excellent Namalsk map, Sumrak, has been doing his damndest to get the game to a good point with the extremely limited budget and manpower he has of whats left of the DayZ skeleton crew. It's not there yet, not by a long shot, but he's certainly steering it in the right direction.

Right up until they shut down BI Slovakia down, which was the full-time studio working on DayZ and so we're left with Sumrak's janitorial closet crew in some dark boiler room in the Czech Republic So to say that it's suffered from some AWFUL mismanagement is an understatement, once Dean left back in early 2014 it was pretty much every man for themselves
Bought this game for PC as soon as it was available because I enjoyed the mod so much. Zombies clipped through all objects including the terrain, there were no vehicles, servers had terrible lag. And it felt like this went on for months but I don't know because I quit and never played it again.
Exact same boat here. I recently saw it now has a good player population and was curious why so I tried it again. It's in a good state now. Found a server that plays very similar to OG Epoch and I'm back to spending countless hours on this damn game. Also deerisle is really freaking good.
Everyone knows the tired out concept of humans being way more dangerous than the zombies in a zombie apocalypse. But this game breaks that tradition by allowing the zombies to take 15 headshots, phase through six walls, slap you once and kill you, and *then* die.

I feel like interesting player encounters were much more frequent in the mod. Like encountering clans, squads, psychos and of course friendlies. (Possibly because more people played it.) I was hunted down out of revenge for killing a squad member, forced to be a servant, had a longstanding friendship until I was betrayed, some of these examples happend multiple times and the list goes on.
I think the largest issue with day z is that there are so many things that are not explained at all. Where do I go for better loot? How to I make a hook for a fishing rod? It’s all there but none of it is explained
My friends and I were playing on a really popular server, had built up a base, had gotten pretty well stocked, discovered another small settlement and then almost immediately got into a back and forth war of raiding each other’s bases and stealing from each other. It was really fun
It would be interesting to have AI zones. Bandits that attack on sight. Or rob you of gear. Friendly zones with AI guards in full gears and kill on sight if weapons are fired in the vicinity. Traders. And fetch quests. With a reputation system. It would be great having to get a certain weapon for a merchsnt or merc for ammo, or food, or such. Reputation with groups so you choose your alliances. With either PvE servers with PvP zones And Full PvP servers. It would be great to kill time. But the game mainly in my experiance is Spawn Loot Survive Die to some pansy with a sniper 2000 meters away Repeat
The well still working is the most realistic part of this game so long as the water table is deep enough it should be safe from any viral contamination and as for the unending thing yeah it run out but not from one single persons use
I have chronic Dayz disorder. I walk, eat, drink then perish by some drunken Slav holding a badly damaged ceremonial rifle with only a single bullet in the mag and a broken scope…
I have about 600 hours, and I have had one single good week-long life as a solo. And it made me love the game despite all of its flaws. I got to find, repair, and drive a car for the first time, using it as my mobile base. I got to 1v3 a group. I got to raid a base for the first time (found out after using all my ammo on the gate that you could just roll through one of the windows). And I got to betray a group…for like the 50th time…because I’m that guy lol
I will forever remember the timee where I was wandering with some rando Trying to find food, as we both where almost dead he told me he will kill himself and I should eat him He did, I ate him and survived Then me and friends lured some other guy to us, and we shot him, and ate him too Good times

hardcore server , we where in a shoot out everybody on the server dies at the same time, only to be respawned naked in the same place by an hacker who was standing in the air with is arms up and spamming hand granades in to the crowd . Feel free to belive me or not but this was the first thing i remember in 633 hours on this piece of art . Also the swimming in the ground glicth which from my quick search is still replicable to this day .

Its got its downsides, like youve said, but its the only game ive ever been so sucked into and lost so much time on. Also, ive met lots of friendlies. Definitely is less common but not that rare. Idk. Its the game i waited my whole life for amd i started at NES. I love the review though. Great energy and humor!
The thing that makes DayZ is the interactions with other players, but the new playerbase of fortnite, cookie-clicker brainlets think it's about loot. Next time don't just KOS, break his legs, tie him up, make him drink gasoline, sell him as a slave to a clan and have an experience!
