I saw him in '62 (or '63) opening for Chuck Berry!! Audience was anxious for Chuck to come out (of course) but paid Fred proper respect. He appreciated it.
Yeah I don't know how much you know about him but his son was Jimmy Lee and that is my grandfather on my mom's side. Never got to meet him but my granma has like so of his guitars and stuff.
He came to my college around 69 or 70, and I was assigned to take him around for the day. I had a very cute friend named Louise. We all had dinner together, and Fred almost went nuts, he was so interested in her!
lord only knows where you are eleven years hence but the blues is still alive and kicking in the guise of the white stripes, elbow (the older stuff at least) a lot of the sludge bands, the NOLA crowd etc are blues-based too imo though the blues is just one man and an acoustic guitar (though fred gets a pass). muddy waters, eric clapton with the big backing bands leave me cold son house for example was never particularly brilliant in terms of technical skill, even back in the thirties before the whiskey set in. but boy, when he sings theres something otherworldly emanating from deep inside this quiet and god-fearing man thats something i dont get from chicago blues. muddy waters' version of walking blues is for me, far superior to anything he came out with later
@@jackssmirkingrevenge9365 The blues as performed like this, with space and depth, is being lost. White Stripes and various rock musicians who take elements don't qualify as blues. The blues with all the richness between the notes is dying. To say it's "alive" it lives in slivers and shades in white rock musicians who don't get the whole nuance between the notes.

He was in a hop joint in Clarksdale Miss. A lot of years ago. I was young and the women that would come there to see him. I was a young man and loved women and my cousin Leroy did to. We would go there to hear good music but I must say the women that would come to see him play Hollywood model Queens they were but they lived in Clarksdale Miss. My cousin I did not see him for about two week until I went into town he had a black eye and busted lip. I asked him were he had been. The story is never miss with another man's woman.
+Alexander Köck Ill steer away from the whole 'practice more' advice. McDowell's sound is largely attributed to the semi hollow body guitar. A tube amplifier does not play a huge role in his particular sound, its the semi-hollow. He used a Gibson Trini Lopez when he went electric. I believe he also used metal thumb picks. This creates a very tin-like blues sound. You really hear the 'chuck-chuck' sound when he's thumping the bass strings.
+Alexander Köck,feeling & old valve amps its not just the tone its the FEELING.many call it the natural high.but fred is called the best blues slide guitarist for a reason.checkout going down to the river live, another great is skip james top notch original guitar skills & top notch vocal checkout hardtime killing floor & catfish & your be hooked pure blues & soul unlike no other.could name many many more.peace.
I wish this sort of Video was around when I was a kid. The sound is lacking. Oh Well, Fred is always an inspiration along with Sam aka "Lightnin'" Hopkins. Always much to be learned. Definitely

I like that one. Not only the music but the film and its atmosphere. The colors is also fantastic. Though I like McDowell my favourite version of LOUISE is done by Robert Pete Williams. I believe that's the same kind of guitar Dave Grohl uses for the Foo Fighters. It at least has the same diamond shaped f-holes and the same kind of headstock.
Hard to tell..but it does have reverb and is probably about 15 watts judging by the size of it. Any old small valve amp with reverb will get that sound.
GREAT! The mom would have called the Police on me!! I would have snatched him up in my car and took him to a Summer Blues Fest and left him there! LOL joking but thats great! Just Great!
american pop is a mile wide and an inch deep..if ya want the real deal ya gotta walk upstream where the water is sweetest.Wen ya get to AliFarke Toure's house, have a sit and look back downstream...u can just barely make out Muddys house
I agree - stuff like this is amazing - but the problem is loads of blues more easily available is boring middle aged smug fret wankery - which probably puts a lot of people off.
this man is the rosetta stone for modern music
People like this master Mississippi Fred McDowell, no longer dwell among us anymore, that is to our very great loss
Very true , we must never forget It is up to us to keep this music alive
This is my great great grandfather.
Really...😎😎😎
Abraham Lincoln it's my great great great great great grandfather
he was great
Darius Lang you should be effin proud as punch. McDowell was the best of the best. Full respect to you and family.
I hope you play guitar

wicked!
Chuck Berry should have opened for Fred
@@jadecleveland865 as much as I love Chuck -- I agree with you. Fred is the best.

There is a extensive chapter on Alan Lomax meeting Fred McDowell in the 1959 in "The Land Where The Blues Began." Excellent book.
He came to my college around 69 or 70, and I was assigned to take him around for the day. I had a very cute friend named Louise. We all had dinner together, and Fred almost went nuts, he was so interested in her!
Do you think he based this song off of her?
@@iicjguitar0416 😀Haha! He'd been singing that song for years & years when he met my friend!
This song tears my guts apart
Its really sad the Blues is becoming a lost art form if we don't keep it alive in the next 20years it'll only be a myth! Keep BLUES alive!

Love Mississippi Fred Mcdowell
Open E tuning tuned a half-step flat (from low to high: Eflat-Bflat-Eflat-G-Bflat-Eflat).
thanks man
This is what it's all about, great, pure music.
that aches so good...
I was born in 1978 in Havana Cuba. too late and too fat from the good ol' blues. DAMN!!
sunday morning coming down? a good dose of Mississippi fred or hank Williams will be the cure........
This is some classic, down home blues! Great music.
Some good ol classic blues right here.
Don't see to many people playing a Trini Lopez model Gibson. This is so good.
True, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters and Noel Gallagher (Gem Archer plays it) spring to mind
With a Bigsby to boot!!!
This guy is magical....:-)
Another good way to keep it alive is to play it.
Ladies and gentleman: a lesson in music
Tremendous! Thanks for sharing.
The real deal!Thank's for sharing this and in colour too!
Good god! This was one of the gods walking the earth.
the greatest music put on this Earth...the blues accept no substitutes

Stunning he is wearing a short bottle on his third finger enabling him to fret notes with that digit as well. Tuned to an open F chord!
Brilliant..what a player.
amazin' haunting blues this guy is a legend, read stanley booth's article 'bout him in the 60's
@peace2thegods
I think the tuning is open E (Just tune to open D - DADF#AD, and put a capo on the second fret)
It's great....
thanx for sharing that. it's great !

totally bad ass
grazie!!!!
I can dig it. I'd have a grand old time with Louise myself.
Spiritual.
Besides the Coldplay comment, I must agree with you.
It is a Gibson Triny Lopez, (a kind of 335) In fact it is the same model that Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters currently uses albiet without the Bigsby. ATB
*Delta Blues. Wrong. Hill Country Blues. You really should fix the description. Major error.
Bull..delta blues..cos he's from Tennessee move to the sip..most hill katt play songs from the delta blues guys
Profound simplicity.
That Louise musta been something.
U KNOW SHE HAD SOME OF THAT SNAPPER!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Acually, it's a Gibson Trini Lopez Model. It's very similar apart from the headstock and the diamond shaped "f" holes
Strait to the bones
I ain't had no loving since you been gone, baby.
Sit next to Fred. Sip a little. Whittle and spit.
What the hell man..........this is IT.
Mid-to-late '60s at the University of Washington, if memory serves.
Tell me please whats better than this...wonderful....
Puts me in mind of some late nights with buddy Byrde and a water glass fulla old grandad. Sweet, slow, but with a nice bite...

Fred's Gibson Trini Lopez is interchangeable with his voice
Is this in open D tuning?
most, it's actually open E, same thing as openD but +1step (tune UP from standard)
i must assert, this is not Delta Blues, He's from the Hill Country and there is a difference
...just one of my pet peeves...
It a delta style... he was out Tennessee move to the Sip..
@serialmosher - Amen to that Bro !
what the hell, can anyone tell what the name of that gibson is, i've never seen it before
No disrespect intended but according to these comments this man apparently has everyone in this comments section just about related to him wow
Is that a Gibson Trini Lopez model?

Gibson 'Trini Lopez' 335.

Dan Auerbach owns this guitar now if i'm not mistaken...pretty sweet

any idea when this was filmed????? seems like the 50's or 60's
i'd say 68-71 cuz the trini lopez was his last guitar
Open D (or E).
