    In this quick lesson I explain what a 9th is and how it can be used. The 9th is just the 9th degree of the scale, with is also the same as the 2nd.
    It can be added to chords to give a warm, rich texture. It can also be used when improvising - the 9th gives such a lovely sound and can really take your playing to the next level.
    If you have any questions, just leave them in the comment box below and I will get straight back to you!

    Great lesson but the only thing I don't understand is why there's no major or minor 9ths? When I play a major 7th + a 9th it sounds different to a minor 7th + a 9th

    • @Roeban445
      @Roeban445 2 года назад +3

      I think because the 9th doesn't make it major or minor, the 7th can be a B (major) or a Bb (Minor) the 9th is always just the D blending in with the major or minor chord, but the 9th itself isn't major or minor.

      If it doesnt have the 7th in it it cant be a 13th just like how it cant be a 9th 11th etc. If it only has A without the seventh along with it yes it is a 6th Chord

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  6 лет назад +12

      I started off playing classical music doing all the grades. I think it's great! I much prefer jazz though, I find classical music can be limited in terms of creativity since you're usually just copying what someone else has written, whereas jazz is improvised and forces you to be much more in the moment. Though I do think learning classical music is great for a technical exercise and a good workout.

    i liked it but is it possible to hold the chord with one hand

    • @daniels7593
      @daniels7593 3 года назад +6

      Most commonly it’s voiced either with two hands (root on the bass, the rest with the other hand on a higher register) or with two instruments (in jazz, an acoustic bass playing the root and a piano playing the rest of the chord or an inversion for extra spice).
      Hope that helps put it into perspective!

    In guitar world the 9th chord has a flattened 7th.

    • @mjazzguitar
      @mjazzguitar 2 года назад +2

      I'm surprised he didn't mention that because it is the more common use of the ninth. If you see D9 it's automatically assumed that it's a dominant chord.

      @@Piano_Pig thank you! so what does it mean to have a maj7 + a minor 3rd versus a minor 7 + Major 3rd? I watched another video saying the first would be a major 9th, while the latter would be a minor 9th?

  • @richardslater677
    @richardslater677 4 месяца назад

    The chord you are playing is not a 9th. A 9th is a dominant 7th with a ninth added ie a flat 7th. So C9 would be C E G Bb and D, not B as you are playing. The chord you are playing is Cmaj9.

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  3 года назад

      The 9th implies that the 7th is in the chord as well. You can't really have a 9th chord without the 7th, otherwise it would be called "add 2"

    • @laurant4282
      @laurant4282 3 года назад

      @@Piano_Pig I see, so their is a difference between a Cmaj9 chord and a CmajAdd9 chord. The first is telling us to play like any other chords. While the second is telling us a play a Cmaj - but only add the 9th and nothing else!
