Example of songs that use these 4 chords: • Axis of Awesome - 4 Fo...
In this beginner lesson, we look at a very common chord progression which uses four chords. These 4 chords are used in hundreds of songs!
In the key of C the chords are as follows: C, G, Am, F
Practice playing around with these chords to get them under your fingers. You should use different inversions and voicings around the piano.
Once you are comfortable with the chords, you can add some timing and rhythm. Start by playing each chord and count 4 beats for each one. Then you can begin adding in different patterns such as split chords and arpeggios.
Once you can do all of this, you can either sing the melody of songs over the top or work the melody out by ear, and play it in your right hand whilst playing the chords in your left.

Finally a piano teacher who doesn't have verbal diarrhoea.. I mean to say, someone who teaches at a sensible pace so the information actually has time to sink in! I learned more from this than most other hour long lessons.

I find that most piano teachers on RUclips are excellent in their own way. Haven't yet come across one that I didn't learn from. It is possible to praise one without needing to put down all others. Your base language reveals more about you than about them.
EDIT: Glad to see you deleted the part of your comment that insulted all other piano teachers on RUclips. If your own work is good enough it will sell on its own merits and there really is no need to discredit the work of others.

I like how he teaches on a pace where beginners are given the chance to absorb his teachings! Sometimes a pupil feels that there's so much info to take in and it can become discouraging indeed! Ofcourse people can learn plenty from various/different teachings, and it depends on each pupil how much they're willing to practice & spend time on their own! All teachers are valuable indeed!

Ashlin Scalco it will to begin with, but the wonderful thing about the human body is that it adapts (well in most people it does), so you get hard patches on your fingers and then it stops hurting so much.
At the beginning it hurts a lot - I empathize because when I was learning the bass I would have blisters on the end of my fingers until they hardened :)

I am at your site . Thank you so much.. I chose the most popular. Then I noticed this has a lot of songs. As a church pianist. .third generation musician..I have to play by ear a lot. In every key.. So with forty plus years playing you develop a fairly good ear.. I am working on perfect pitch, not to say" I have perfect pitch", but to
be a better musician. Normally I would have passed this up for the above reasons.. But as I mature, I realize that we can learn something from others.. I can learn songs that I don't know.. play in styles that push me..and many other reasons I probably will do some of these..I will make sure that your link to this main channel will be in the video subscription.
I can tell you are indeed ,what a teacher (pedagogue) what a big word..should be. I will encourage them to play the videos over and over again.. I only have 20 subscribers , but I think you will get some more subscribers. Wish you the best. Paul

This video provides an excellent description of four common chords to play songs in the key of C and how to play these four chords in different and interesting ways. Once you learn how to this, you still have to know when to use these chords for any given song (given that the chord progressions can differ between songs) and how to figure out how to play any given song in the key of C or in whatever key you choose (a step that is often glossed over and/or rarely explained in explicit terms).
The “general” rule of thumb for finding the basic chords to play with most any song is to play the basic chords that carry the melodic notes played on the down beats. Or, explained in a different way that is much easier to translate into practice and in real-time as you are playing the piano - Play the melodic note on the next down beat as note 1, 3, or 5 of the basic chord.
To figure out which note on the keyboard to play the first melodic note of the song so that you play the song in the key of C, sing the song aloud (or play it on the piano in whatever key) and identify the number of note intervals X separating the first note of the melody from the last and final note of the song. Start the song on the note that is X intervals from the note C on the keyboard.

very common progressions maybe in tons of songs, It's how the chords are used is the real magic, inversions for example, relative minor's, borrowed chords from a different key, have a look at the circle of fifth's. so many ways to be creative, song writers these days are just too lazy, It doesn't have to be a 1 4 5 progression. ths is busshit. a bit of music theory wouldn't do these fellas any harm.

Going to work out a version of Pacheibel's Cannon on finger style
Guitar. Listened to it on you tube and even did some research on it. It appears to be a song common to all of Europe for a longing of peace/ joy. I've been having fun working on my steering slash suspension system on my 99 Ford Expedition. In my off time I'm making a router jig as a wood working project. I'm completely self taught on this. I never had music in school but have spent thousands for private lessons and styles.. on about 10 different instruments. I love math too.. used to be passable in calculus but really enjoyed the basics like geometry. Many musicians have lots of hobbies, skills and interests.
but like me, they gravitate back to music. If I don't spend at least twenty hours a week.. I can tell it. The best PP

This was great! I'm a beginner and can't read sheet music. I play around on my keyboards but it gets redundant. This was very, very helpful. Thank you!

I watched 10 or more videos on 4 chords and didn't understand anything until this one. I always wanted to make my own background music for my videos but didn't know anything until now. Made my first really basic piece 10 minutes ago. Thank you!

I must compliment and thank you on what you just taught in this lesson, there are so many piano lessons on RUclips but your lesson is head and shoulders above the rest, continue on this trend and you will be bountifully rewarded, may God continue to bless you with wisdom beyond your years, thanks.

It just seems so easy when I watch and hear you do it. A big part is muscle memory with the fingers. My ring fingers are so weak. Pinky fingers too. Thanks for your help. It is a good little tutorial.

Thanks so much for this. It's 5 years later and I don't know if your site is still active but I'm subscribing anyway. I'm a beginner, 3 months in, learning on FlowKey, which I really like. I'm busy learning scales now with chords next but your video gives me a look just down the road at some practical principles that seem easy to learn and will give me some instant gratification and motivation early on.
