Yo this is actually my fav hip-hop project ever. EL-P’s production is godly and has an electric feeling to it. Their lyrics are so clever and they give such a huge energy that makes you wanna go to war.
RTJ2 was the album that got me not only into hip hop, but was the first album I listened to that got me appreciating music full time. I was in my 2016 maths class, bored with the substitute teacher, so decided to add the album to my iPad. From that gritty instrumental hit on Blockbuster Nights, I was under immediately. Every song is an immaculate landscape painting detailing the nightmarish capatilist hellscape of modern America. Mike and El are all conquering badasses who aren't invincible but are so ahead of all us sinners. RTJ2 is a masterpiece. Every album they release is fantastic, but that one takes the cake. Their live show had my hands stuck in fist and gun position the whole time. Thanks for making another great essay on another great band
Honestly disappointed you didn't even touch on Meow the Jewels the album where the production is 99% Cats and still managed to make some of the songs from RTJ2 even better then they were. Smh.
"Call Ticketron" is definitely a fun track about them reflecting on their success both in the highs and lows along with their prospective future together. Certainly not as tight as a song like "Close Your Eyes" and "Legend Has It" but no slump either. Other collabs of note would be their DJ Shadow cut which has a fun behind the scenes story to it describing the writing process and the verses they loaned for a remix of Miike Snow's "Heart is Full."
I usually don't idolise artist's personalities but when I grow up I hope I'm down to earth, nice and for lack of a better word badass. As Killer Mike and Elp are.
Not to mention they had their friends make "Meow" The Jewels remixes of some of their songs, and good GOD I never knew that a cat purring would be the most killer bass I've EVER had thumping through the speakers of my car lmao.
"Early" might be my favorite of theirs. I've never thought of describing a hip hop track as being 'beautiful' but this one really is. And they make the sickest beats in hip hop today, bar none.
rtj is hip hop duo with a rock and roll attitude and i loved it as rock/metal fan who rarely listened to new school hip hop it's breath of fresh air to listen to rtj on 2010's onward.
EL-P is also the co founder of Definitive Jux which is a label featuring even more underground artists, such as Aesop Rock (which you should do a video about)
The lyrical contrast between these two is incredible. Been a fan of EL-P since I heard him on on the THUG soundtrack back in like 2004. So happy him and Mike are finally blowing up with RTJ
People don't even know about that shit. I had to order a used CD off the Internet to even hear the whole album a few years ago. Funcrusher+ ain't on iTunes or Spotify or anywhere in its entirety. That's almost unbelievable considering the shit-ton of garbage you can find all over those services
The run the jewels self titled try deal dose still happen maybe not in the mainstream but fuck that theres more then that like ive been working on a collab album and im producing that shit
i love RTJ as they represent everything which is hip-hop i don't even mean because they are boom-bap and whatever but staying true to themselves, having that confident in themselves that they kill shit and with political movements, is what hip-hop is all about making a movement but stayin true to you
“a decent introduction” like he doesnt think im gonna spend the next few weeks getting myself knee deep into run the jewels. hopefully i like them as much as this guy does.
Just wanna say I believe the name run the jewels came from the Tupac song Hit em up I which he says "steady gunning while we running for your jewels" I could be wrong tho
Ok but whats with that album that I think they just took rtj 2 and made it into cats. Do I remember this correctly like meow the jewls or somethong or am I crazy
Think you could maybe check out Phil Beaudreau/AOE? I’ve been following him since 2014 and he makes sorta like dreamy/experimental music(?). He only has 2 projects out (Ether and Homecoming) but they’re pretty solid in my opinion.
I discovered Hip Hop after watching Jay-Z do Glastonbury. I was lucky as hell to find Good Kid maad City, Long Live A$ap and Rap Music all around the same time. Loved Killer Mike and then found Run The Jewels and there's no turning back. Right now I'm banging Danny Brown and JPEGMafia but I cannot f**king wait for RTJ4. Also I'm a 46 year old white guy from the UK who gets some really strange looks when I pull up at lights with the stereo hammering out Love Again.
You are awesome for loading this! Can’t wait for the new album. I would not say RTJ 3 is bloated at all. Every track is not just good, but great to excellent.. many subtle focuses including police violence, popular media and choosing the lessor of two evils.. RTJ 3’s songs were much more well written when it comes to song structure and hooks compared to the others as well
1:58 HOW IS THIS RARE AT ALL? Look at any album by Tha God Fahim, Mach-Hommy, Fly Anakin, Tuamie, AnkhleJohn - basically anybody in the underground of hip-hop today - and you'll find this.
I still love DJ Shadow x Run the Jewls Nobody Speaks
p l
And the music video is creative and hilarious
this was the first track that I know about them
Yo this is actually my fav hip-hop project ever. EL-P’s production is godly and has an electric feeling to it. Their lyrics are so clever and they give such a huge energy that makes you wanna go to war.
Oh my lord yes.
They're so good live, man
Loverboy Media dude watching close your eyes live was something else
Oh myyy...
OH MY DARLING... yes

THE DRUNKEN AMBASSADOR well said
Das cool and all but I dont remember asking
EL-P produced the underground classic, 'The Cold Vein' by Cannibal Ox.. that was my favorite album in middle school!!
One of the songs was on a Tony Hawk game I grew up with, even back then I was entranced by how spot on it sounded
@@cacomeat7385 hell yeaa! "iron Galaxy" thats my shit!!!
Funcrusher Plus from his first group Company Flow is a fucking masterpiece
@@rbleaks818 broo Company Flow was soooo doope
@@rbleaks818 damn shame how few people get down with Funcrusher Plus. Legendary
Do NOT sleep on El-P's solo stuff

I don't like the majority of the remixes on that but Paw Due Respect goes hard.
shake your head and be dissapointed - it´s your own choice

Which song has the cat purring bass? I need it
I believe it's close your eyes and meow to fluff
Thank you!
Meow the Jewels was hard to listen to. Not gonna lie.
I love that it was made though.
"Early" might be my favorite of theirs. I've never thought of describing a hip hop track as being 'beautiful' but this one really is. And they make the sickest beats in hip hop today, bar none.
You verbalized every single one of my thoughts on this highly underrated duo!
They are national treasures.
rtj is hip hop duo with a rock and roll attitude and i loved it as rock/metal fan who rarely listened to new school hip hop it's breath of fresh air to listen to rtj on 2010's onward.
RTJ 3 > RTJ 2 > RTJ 1, excited for RTJ 4
RTJ2>RTJ3>RTJ1, But still hella hype for RTJ4
RTJ2>RTJ3>RTJ1, hella excited for RTJ4

RTJ2>RTJ3>RTJ1, hecking jazzed for RTJ4

Heard a lot about them, but never gave myself a chance to dive in their music. Time to change that.
EL-P is also the co founder of Definitive Jux which is a label featuring even more underground artists, such as Aesop Rock (which you should do a video about)
I can not wait for RTJ4
Their song with Zack De La Rocha of RATM is definitely my favorite.
Which one, they made two: Close Your Eyes and Count to Fuck and Kill Your Masters
George Thomas just
Always forward, just like your content, always moving in a great direction!
A Report to Shareholders is my jam.
one of the best hip hop duos to ever form. I'm happy they're finally getting the recognition they truly deserve.
Saw them for the first time at All Points East a couple weeks ago, crazy
Theyre soooo amazing
I love your videos! Another great break down :)
The lyrical contrast between these two is incredible. Been a fan of EL-P since I heard him on on the THUG soundtrack back in like 2004. So happy him and Mike are finally blowing up with RTJ
he had a track on it? That's my favorite in the series but can't remember one of his own tracks
I have fun listening to these guys have fun. Their delivery is ooof
Dope short breakdown!
I don’t agree that RTJ3 is a little bloated, personally I think it’s perfect. But, I get what you’re saying
Hunter Marsh the record for me is also perfect, other than Stay Gold. That song is honestly awful. Takes it from a10 to a light 9 for me
I think RTJ3 is actually better overall than RTJ2 but I like a couple individual songs from RTJ2 better than any of there other songs
@@iamyouarei9497 I agree with this take
They are perfect.
Company flow(El-p's old group) has one of the best debut hip hop albums
People don't even know about that shit. I had to order a used CD off the Internet to even hear the whole album a few years ago. Funcrusher+ ain't on iTunes or Spotify or anywhere in its entirety. That's almost unbelievable considering the shit-ton of garbage you can find all over those services
I tried listening to their first album a bit ago and fell asleep, but now after watching this video I think I’ll try to get into their music again!
Sunverzé hdyk?
my favorite group currently.
You got to mention Company Flow when talking about El-P....Fun Crusher Plus is a classic 90's underground Hip Hop album.
Can't wait for RTJ 4.
This channel jumped from a rap fan to pop fan back to back like parkour
El-P was part of Company Flow. Their only album “Funcrusher Plus” is considered by many as one of the greatest underground hip-hop albums of all time
I need another RTJ products man.
RTJ4 is coming out this summer
Angel duster is one of my favourite songs ever
How’s watching because their new album is so good you want to hear the rest of their music.
I'm in the "Superfan who will watch anything related to them" category. 👉🏾🤛🏾
2 of my favorite current MCs. I'd love to see them drop solo albums thou. not break up just do solo stuff for a lil while
The run the jewels self titled try deal dose still happen maybe not in the mainstream but fuck that theres more then that like ive been working on a collab album and im producing that shit
So hyped for RTJ4

Thursday in the Danger Room is such an underappreciated song.
When he calls it an into to RTJ without mentioning Meow The Jewels smh my head

The best imo

Loved them on gears of war lol
Ooh la la!
and also they have Rick and Morty in one of their music videos (which is amazing BTW)

Dude your missing the whole Adult Swim origin story that is so cool
A guide to Vampire weekend?
RTJ = rap's unicorns
No mention of Co. Flow, huh?🤔 Ok. Hmmm.
I just left the same comment. Company Flow was a huge group they created the NYC underground scene of 94-07
Can anyone tell me which one of rtj is the best 1,2,3,4???
BANJO KAZOOIE IN SMASH
Just wait until this guy hears ab RTJ4
No hay alguien que lo subtitule al español?
4 !
What about meow the jewels
Hmmmm. ..... I'm pretty sure Tyler just set a record for one of the first things you said about them then doing it all by themselves. Igor done
U can’t forget meow the jewels
Imagine going over El-Ps history and not mentioning Company Flow. 🤷🏽♂️
31st.
Here’s hoping Joyner Lucas and RTJ Collab in these pressing times. XD
love again is the only bad rtj song
🤜🔫
You really know how to downplay the legendary unique production that this group has huh
there's definitely some amazing stuff production-wise across the trilogy, but I've personally always been more impressed by the rapping
Alfo Media I respect that. I feel like that just reflects what we both listen for in hip hop

I love RTJ. I'm so pissed that the new Beat Saber music pack is all Imagine Dragons... I'll forgive the creators if they release an RTJ pack..

EL-P is better
Killer Mike ain't shit without El-p's production...wish EL went back to his solo stuff bc he has do dumb down his lyrics with RTJ
