  • After a blustery start to December, a narrow weather-window opened to allow Cheech and Jimmy to jump aboard the final headboat trip of the season, targeting the "Boston Bluefish," aka pollock, with legendary groundfish captain Jim Walsh on the American Classic out of Lynn, Massachusetts.
    Winter headboat fishing can be hit or miss, but with some top-notch breakfast sandwiches, a lively crew, and some brisk, but beautiful weather, it's always worth making the trip.

    I love your content. You have no idea how important your channel is to someone who didn’t start fishing until his mid 40s.

    Used to catch them in the surf in Montauk in the 60’s on tin. They’re good fish.

    The mate that you call Tank looks like Tommy. I fished the American Classic back when his mother drove him to the boat until Capt Walsh started picking him up. As far as I know my buddy still has the largest cod caught on the boat. He had a 79 lb and a 32 lb on at the same time. He was using a rig made of 400 lb test!. We had gone tuna fishing on another boat and the line got a kink in it so the Capt had cut it off. He saw my friend pick it up and warned him he better not see him make a rig out of it on his boat! Well he did make a double rig and that is what he caught the 2 fish on. We had fished the Saturday trip and i won the pool with a 36 lb cod. The next day my 1st fish was a 36 lb cod and everyone thought i was going to win again. Before the day was over my 36 lber was not even in the top 50 on the boat.

      The Yankee Fleet operates their special marathon deep water jigging trips where they specifically target pollock. They say on their site that they can fish as deep as 500 feet.

    Can you catch Pollock now, February, on shore in Massachusetts?

      There are always some small harbor pollock around.

    • @OnTheWaterMedia
      @OnTheWaterMedia  Год назад +1

      The harbor pollock, say 6"-10", aren't uncommon in the Canal in early winter. Bigger, keeper-sized fish are far less common from shore these days.

    You guys need to move those jigs vertically too, make those hunks of metal become alive, should be outfishing Norwegian jigs 3 to 1 on pollock and redfish, slow pitch and haddock don't mix, I have tried for the last 2 years.

      I fill the cooler with Haddock on slow pitch

    • @OnTheWaterMedia

      That was our thinking going into the trip, that the slow-pitch would clean up on the pollock. It seemed to be an off day overall for them though. A week later, Capt. Jim Walsh got back out and filled the boat with big "boston blues."
      Have had mixed results with haddock on slow pitch. We filmed it for an episode of OTW TV (Airing this weekend) and we caught plenty of haddock on the slow pitch rod, but they were all on the teaser, not the metal.

      @@OnTheWaterMedia imo, (which should mean very little) pollock ( not pollock 'coal fish') ,are mislabeled as a groundfish in new england. Theyre predators and will strike fast moving lures in any water colomn. Hammered diamonds, knife jigs, shit ive seen em blowing up bait topwater on a small handfull of occasion. Haddock are way more susceptible to slow pitch. Tiny mouth is not conducive to hunting. The haddock eat on near the bottom
      The only time ive had luck w haddock on the jjg is early spring on stellwagen when theyre 180' or less.

    Where the fuck did all the Pollock go? I used to slam em in the fall/winter on Eastman's and the last few years they've been almost non existent. I think the last good bite i remember was winter 2017.
