$20 Toshiba T1910 Laptop Repair

So I picked up this Toshiba laptop for $20. It doesn't turn on, but I reckon I can fix it...
It's a Toshiba T1910, with a 486 SX processor running at 33Mhz. It also has a 200Mb hard drive and 4Mb of RAM.
There is a common problem with these series of laptops where the capacitors fail. They need to removed and replaced to repair the issue.

Those power bricks would need a recap soon. Had to repair two recently, both of them stopped working or just worked for some time. It can be disassembled without much effort, there is a screw underneath the label, and with some prying, the two halves pop out.
The caps were starting to leak, so even if it works, it is a good idea to replace them

@@TheBasementChannel sure thing! Btw, those toshibas also need new belt in the floppy drive. I tried to replace it once, but didn't have the exact belt, so it didn't work. Do you have any experience with this? There are two different types of floppy drives, one of them is Citizen and one (I think?) is Panasonic
Recover the toshiba bios tool, i dont think its archived anywhere. Youll need it if the hdd goes bad.
I’m not sure what the bios tool is? Isn’t bios built into the machines rom?
I just just bought a t1910 from the trift shop! Everything seems to be working except the floppy drive. It makes a loud spining noise while trying to read a disket. Wondering if it's fixable. Anyway I can't wait to mess around with win 3.11 on it! Thanks for the video.

I have a very similar model with a missing floppy drive. Are you able to check what kind of floppy drive is in yours? Possibly the Citizen W1D?
Great video. I have one of these and after decades of reliability it seems to have the same issue. Not sure I'll be repairing it though.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Mine had the exact same problem. I only had a 1000uf cap at hand so I only replaced the short brown one. Figured I'd try to power it on anyway and it worked! It's time for some SimCity to celebrate :)

I know it’s pricey… but can I send my childhood T1950CT from California to wherever you are? Same issues… but… disabled and can’t really repair it on my own!

NetBSD for a lightweight BSD?! (Or OpenBSD).
And then… games?! And external monitor?! For all of the above?!
Sorry mate, I don’t offer a repair service. Best to find an electronics technician in your local area and ask them to replace the caps in the power supply board.

Great work! I wonder how many of these machines were tossed in the trash when this happened. I wonder what would happen if you were to connect an external display to it? I assume it would show in colour? Give it a go and post some pics on Twitter/Insta and let us know! Also - I think you should look at replacing that hard drive with a compact flash adapter solution - you'd loose the noises of the hard drive but it would be a much better solution. You didn't tell us the specs! How much RAM has it got? Does it have onboard audio?
Yes it’s vga colour on external monitor but can’t do dual screen. It’s a 486SX 33Mhz machine with 4Mb RAM. These take some weird RAM add in card, goes in the side flap. Only beeper audio. It’s a pretty basic machine really.
I just picked up the same laptop. Had the very same problem now repaired. Need to sort out backing up the hard drive to preserve the system.

@@TheBasementChannel I believe it is very common. Next task is the floppy drive.
I had the proprietary mouseball that connected to the side. I still have a very tactile memory of using it. The underside curled up if I recall correctly? So if you rested too much of your hand on the mouseball it would pop out of the port. Kind of annoying, but I remember it fondly.
I think those trackballs must be pretty rare nowadays. I’ve heard a lot of stories of them falling off and breaking as they hit the floor
I have one of those. It belonged to my husband from the days when he taught Electronic Communications in a College, and retired 2 years later in 1996. After that he mostly used it for Journaling. It worked last time I used it. No battery, though it plugs in. What should I do with it. I didn't think it would be of much use to anyone, except for parts.

I've picked up on of these a couple of days ago. It's a neat mashine that is in really good shape. I even have the Microsoft Ballpoint Mouse V2 that originally came with it. However, the floppy drive seems broken. You can hear a subtle whirring noise when it's trying to ready floppies, but nothing else happens. Based on this my first assumption is that the drive belt has come lose or has ripped and needs to be replaced. So I'll definitely need to disassemble the unit to have a closer look at the floppy drive and which type it is. I'm not sure whether I really want to venture on after that and try a belt replacement, or whether I want to find a working floppy drive. We'll see ;) Anyways, this video showing disassembly definitely comes in handy. Thanks!

Yes that’s the construction company. Looks like they did big civil projects. And had a hand in the Anzac frigates as well according to some of the word docs 😬😆
Years ago one of these machines showed up for "tender" at my school, as they were getting rid of it. It had the trackball with it, but so disappointed I didn't get it.

Loverly video, nice to see you got it working. I used to use a very similar model of this type of Toshiba laptop in work a long time ago now. It was a great laptop for the time. With quiet a few models you could select the screen type, I was luck to get a colour screen that did not smear too much, so you could play doom on it, not overly well, but it played OK.
Yes the passive greyscale screen on this one lets it down a bit. An active colour model would be great.
@@TheBasementChannel I seam to remember the colour verison costing exponentially more. They had some increadible docking stations for a number of models too, that had a few pci and isa slots in them, and 2 drive bays. We had a few of those a work, with a madge token ring card, normally a cd-drive, sound card, and sometimes a svga card connected to an external monitor. It did mean messing around with a wrapper script that altered windows 3.11s config so the correct graphics driver was loaded.

You had more luck than I did! I've got two of the CS variants (fancy colour screen!), and both exhibit the same issue. But I think I bought cheapy caps, and that's bitten me as it started the blink of death again as I was assembling it!!! The originals were leaky though, they had the tell-tale smell when desoldering. Also worthy of note, the floppy drive one at least one of mine has died - it's a belt driven unit, and the belt perished. Couldn't find any replacements, and the replacement drive I put in has yet to perform. Still plenty to do, but I agree they are utterly lovely machines. Nightmare to disassemble though!

I really hope you left that green battery out while reassembling it, those kind of batteries leak all the time!
Yes! Good comment, I did remove it, and it was quite swollen. I cut that bit out of the video though.

Nice to see another NZ RUclipsr! Interesting issue, I've seen that flash code before on slightly newer Toshiba laptops. I might have to try a re capping of a power supply to see if that fixes it. Good to see another old one saved!
Thanks! Yes it’s apparently a fairly common issue across a range of Toshiba machines. Getting to the caps is the hardest part!

Yes it seemed to be in very good condition overall. Other than the capacitor issues Toshiba seemed to really make things to last.
