first of all i know the truth with the canned food in fact the food wasn't rotten and filled with maggots the food was ok it was never even opened all sealed no bacteria or maggots could of gotten in the cans and why they saw it was maggots is because the guy who was a part of the backstory of the ship made in their minds seeing that their were maggots in it
