- A horse died during a chuckwagon race at the Calgary Stampede on Thursday evening after a driver cut another off, forcing a third wagon into a guard rail. It is the third horse death at this year's Stampede. Warning: You may find video of the crash difficult to watch.

$10,000 for the life of a horse that made much more in their lifetime for their handlers? Shame.
The $10K was for embarrassing the stampede. His punishment for killing the horse was to take it home in his pickup. In other words, free dog food for the next couple months.
@@PJMontoya What the heck are you talking about? The driver who was fined was not the owner of the horse that died. So you're suggesting that the driver who caused the accident was randomly given the remains of a horse belonging to someone else. That's absurd.

Why? The yellow jacket knows where the wagon is behind him and how close they are to the rail, but decides to cut off the red. Trying to pull back a team of four thoroughbred race horses isn't at all easy especially in a split second reaction. All could have been avoided if yellow kept with his original line.

if i recall last night was a race that did have two or three first timers and two did cause the crash, lack of experienced racing from the driver, is the issue; one way to solve it: make it more difficult to attain that race level. Change the rules governing the chuck-wagon races and the driver's qualifications to be attained more demanding.
NO ONE WANTS TO SEE HORSES DYING!!! a sentiment shared by many horse owners involved in the Stampede. When you see Jason Glass and others famous drivers you see that they drive prudently and keep their distances from each others, they demonstrate careful driving and it is a pleasure to watch them perform with their magnificent horses.
Never been to a stampede or know anyone who works it. The people should be wearing saddles and hauling. Or people should be running out of a chute to be roped so hard they break a leg or an arm on landing as happens with the calves

Probably the left leader. It went down (probable broken leg) and got trampled by the horse behind. Thoroughbreds are bred for speed, not durability. Their legs break if they try to stop or change direction fast.

Yellow shirt hardly moved, red shirt drove his horses into a hole that was never there and should not have tried to make it 3 wide. Red shirt then pulls on the reigns hard left and runs the guy into the fence. He should have moved out left and let his horse hit yellows shirts wagon...

Horse deaths in the chuck wagon races happen too often. Something needs to change.
If you must have a race. Do it in a staggered fashion like they do in many car races where they dont want car on car accidents. They are just as fun to watch you just dont get the unnecessary violence of drivers pushing their horses into other horses.

An internal medical condition IS NOT a racing related injury, it can happen if the horse is doing nothing in a pasture

Fritz R If only you know these drivers save all these horses from regular racetracks when they aren’t good racehorses and give them a second career. Some drivers have horses race well into their twenties, and they’re only allowed to run horses for either two nights and then give a one night break or three nights and give a two night break

If you watch the video you can clearly see him pulling on right lead away from inside wagon then front wheels turn into inside wagon its not like driving a car and wheels on a chuck wagon are free steering and from what i can see in video he caught a rut , they just don't turn that way, and by the way nice choice of words , you can blame what ever you want , video says different
I totally agree. Chads wagon was bouncing like there were ruts on that corner. My dad drove wagons for years and the way the front wheels move in the video is not normal. The wagons are heavy they don't bounce like that.

Not one of the people that have negatively talked about chuck wagon races realize that most of the horses would have been dead as they come of the race track.
Putting them into the chuck wagon circuit gives them a second chance at life, doing something they love to do : run.

I vote to band the Stampede altogether. They are not doing that event for the horses. I am absolutely convinced the horses would prefer being in the field instead of being used for entertainment and putting their lives in danger. Enough animal cruelty please.

Someday in the future when science figures out how to talk to animals I'd like to hear what the horses have to say about us.
Horses have gone through so much. They should be allowed to relax. Having to carry riders into battles throughout mans history and forced to work in mines pulls extremely heavy wagons during the beginning of the industrial age. That cowboy like most other humans had a choice these horses don't get to choose; that is why people are more concerned.

I work in the horse racing industry, my income is reliant on horse racing.
But I also recognize that the animals are not given the choice and can't be given the choice to race because most would not. Without a human on them or behind them horses or many other animals would not participate in what we find useful or entertaining.
