I honestly and truly enjoy your reviews. It's like a friend of mine telling me about a bike he's considering. Relaxed, friendly, informative, and fun.
The estate in which these are filmed is beautiful. Yours are among my top 3 or 4 favorite motorcycle content makers. Thank you very much.
(By the way, where's the kid been?)
PS: Nice touch putting all the facts & figures on the screen at the end. This allows me to pause and actually read through them at my pace.
    Thanks again, well done.

I managed to testdrive the BMW R18. And I have to say it was the best testride ever.
As you describe very nicely, that engine is all a fantastic experience. Starting the engine alone is already an experience, the shaking of the boxer engine is great.
I'm searching for a second bike to ride on a lazy Sunday and I have to say it sticks to my memory.
Although I certainly don't want to pass up the Harley-Davidson Classic heritage.
I hope I will be able to ride this one soon.
Your channel is the best I can find here, it is always clear and no bullshit. Congratulations and thank you for all those nice moments I can dream away in these strange times.
Also this; we have a fling of your dreadful wind and I have to say for you I hope it is almost over because it is huge. Greetings from Geoffrey (Belgium).

That fishtail exhaust has to be the best looking part of the bike. That and the exposed driveshafts. I don't understand the hate it's getting. It's almost as if people don't know that fishtail exhausts ever existed.

When I test rode this I was prepared for many things but not for the surprising and in so many ways admirable truth: BMW built a true heritage bike. Not a me-too copycat vehicle that does what others already do well or potentially better but a bike that’s true to BMWs own long standing history and heritage. This will displease some people because it makes the bike stand out. It rides rough. That engine is overwhelming on all levels. The ergonomics are odd, the mirrors don’t work, etc., etc. But, more than anything else, they took the sensation of the original R5 and other legendary models and built a heritage classic bike that breaks with tradition only to bring its personality back to life. And that’s what makes this bike special. Later versions of the bike may please more people, but the ones who buy this bike in its first edition will get the unbelievable pleasure to ride a time machine that is pure engineering excellence and fanatic attention to every detail.
Love it, hate it, you can’t ignore the BMW R18. Oh and a jolly good review, too, almost forgot!!!

Cheers Mate from across the pond in San Diego. Mr. Darcy, I had my first test ride on the R18 on Wednesday and I agree with you pretty mush 100%. I would just need a little pre-ride time adjusting the rear suspension a bit to my liking and it would be just fine. Torque for days! It just keeps on pullin' like a freight train. I'll be picking one up in a month or so, and then I have an '80 FXB freshly restored that will join the R18 in the garage. I like your style of critiquing and shooting from the hip! It's a nice change up from some of the American "reviewers". Subscribed and liked.

I had a test ride of a r18 classic today (it was mad windy!) and I loved every second of it. The torque is just permanent there. The handling is really surprising. I found it vibrates a bit when you pushing on but it soon stops as you let off a bit. I can see exactly why you got one! I’m actually seriously considering it now. I think there is some really good deals on the bike since it hasn’t had a super pick up yet.

Nice review. Test rode one on Saturday. Im tall like you so definitely would have to change the standard seat. Took a while to find the gear and brake pedals and adjust to the pull to the left when setting off from a standstill. You can feel its weight but after about half an hour started getting used to it. The power in Rock was the one. Beautiful bike and I should be getting one in October!

Ive watched this video ten times or so. Got to test ride it . It's so cool to ride. They've got the handling refined to a very high level. It makes plenty of grunt for sane riders and those interested in keeping their license. It is a practical bike for distances found in NZ. Those pipes are a love hate affair, personally I think they suit the bike really well. They are made of quite thick steel and seem quite robust. The stand out factor when riding is that it just bring a smile from ear to ear. So cool ; )

Also first watched the Classic Heritage video before finishing this vid, just to compare. And for Looks, the R18, for sound, the Harley.
Also I have a very similar looking Jacket, I got mine in Juneau, Alaska. Brought it home and use it in colder weather. And that open Helmet and Goggles I got some of those too. The Old man being about 20 years my senior, I saw a glimps of the future. (If I hit the gym)

I think it's a stunning bike and it definitely has it's own rebellious identity compared to the standard V twin cruisers, but I think it looks just a bit...naked. it doesn't seem to have a lot of details and it just mixes all together to create some kind of puddle. And the price tag is a bit much for me too so there's that.

It's got a nice old world look to it. Simple and iconic. Terry Thomas in riding goggles and leather cap would not look out of place on this bike.
The exhausts would have to go, kills the look for me. Cylinders blocking forward controls and highway pegs could be a deal breaker but would have to ride it before making a call on that. As a second bike for fun ride outs on sunny days I could see a place in the garage for either this or a Fat Boy.

Using the BMW web site configurator the bike with first edition package, headlight pro, reverse, engine guards, and a windscreen with LED lights can out to $22,000USD. I would opt for a Sergeant seat and panniers which would add another $1,500 compared to H-D's Heritage Classic without headlight pro and reverse for $20,200USD. Given the pricing, I would lean toward the BMW.

Great review. I had a look at one yesterday at Barnstormer. It's a very impressive and beautifully made motorcycle. Hopefully, I will organise a ride next week, weather permitting. Only one thing that I didn't like, and this doesn't only effect this bike, but why do manufacturers put ridiculous scales on their speedos. If the bike has a top speed of 110mph, why put a 0 to 200mph speedo on it? That means that at least 40% of the display is redundant even when maximum speed is reached, and realistically who is going to be doing that speed on a bike like this with no wind protection? Why not just make the scale 0 to 120mph? That would give you a much more accurate scale to see for normal riding, as well as riders who want to max out on the unrestricted sections of the autobahn.

So this thing as TC, 3 rising modes and Reverse gear (optional)? It’s sounds to me that this thing has an edge on the M8 Softails, dollar per feature, this thing has a definite advantage over the Slim. However, it seems that the leaning angle is more on par with the pre M8 old Softails, that, for me, is a huge disadvantage. As a novice rider I’ve already scraped pegs on my 2019 Heritage and I appreciate the additional leaning angle.

As an ex BMW R1100S owner I love it. But as a current Moto Guzzi California Audace 1400 owner I know my Guzzi is a better motorcycle more power more revs less weight(Audace is 300kg wet weight) I tried a HD Fat Bob 114 and my Guzzi accelerate better turns better and brakes better then the HD. I recon this is more of a Softail Slim od Deluxe competitor then the Low Rider S or a Fat Bob. I'm happy that BMW build it and I hope it will sell well!! Definitely better then the old R1200C!! It's a Lovly looking bike!! And if you Guys gonna do a group test make sure you take the Moto Guzzi California Audace 1400(it rides and have a ground clearance similar to a XjR1300) / Eldorado!just make sure that You put it in veloce mode(Italian for sport) wich is sport mode equivalent of BMW Roll mode! • @grahamtricker4103

I had a test ride of the R18 yesterday. I rode to the garage on my 2017 Softail Deluxe (last of the Twin Cams) so I had a good reference. I couldn't fault the construction, finish and build quality. However, I felt the R18 is a "work in progress" or has been rushed to the market (similar to the first K1200S) without enough development and testing. The main areas that I thought needed addressing is the very limited suspension travel resulting in a very firm ride more akin to a sports bike. This bike is supposed to be a cruiser. The ride quality was massively better on my Deluxe. I also felt the handling wasn't as good either, e.g. tipping it in a corner I had to make several adjustments during the corner to get it round, which I don't have to do on my Deluxe. The brakes weren't that good either. Although dual discs at the front, I had to really squeeze the front lever to get the bike to pull up. My Deluxe has a single disc at the front but with Brembo brakes and can be stopped much easier with one or two finger use. I noticed a 2cm movement of the lever before anything happened, so when I got back I suggested to the dealer they might want to check the brakes to make sure there wasn't any air in the system. The engine is sublime but I am not sure if it is two wide for the bike which may have contributed to me having to make changes mid corner to get it around. Two last things which I really can't get my head around: There is no fuel gauge. OK I thought, no problem I'll check the mode switch to see what range is left in the tank. There is no range setting either, so apart from the yellow reserve light coming on that is the only indication you know you have to start planning for a fuel stop. This is unforgivable on a £20K+ bike, especially when they have been offering a range setting on their other cheaper bikes for years. Secondly, a 200mph speedo on a bike that has a maximum speed of 110mph! The US version has a 0 to 130mph scale so why not use this instead of using the EU 0 to 200Km scale and just changing the font from Km/hr to MPH. I could live with the silly ROCK and ROLL modes. Considering the age of the riders that this bike is going to appeal to they could have just used Tour and Sport! I rode my Deluxe home and felt it was a much better bike in every way than the R18, which left me feeling rather disappointed as I was expecting more, so much more from BMW.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan The Deluxe is definitely a keeper. 👍 Maybe the R18 needs to be hustled into a corner which might explain the handling thing. It hides its weight very well and is very good at slow speed manoeuvring in traffic. A softer seat might help also. I hit a small pothole in the road and it shook the bike so violently it knocked my foot which changed it into another gear! Lots of vibes everywhere especially coming up through the seat at around 4000 rpm. Not the sort of thing you expect from a BMW.

Sounds like a well-engineered, well-finished bike -- not surprising for BMW -- although the rear suspension travel is barely adequate. Cruiser-style bikes have been offered with almost every configuration of engine, and each configuration of engine has its pluses. But for me, the essence of a cruiser is a narrow-angle, single-crankpin V-twin. The loping, staccato sound; the deep burble at cruising speed; and the brrrraaap as you crack the throttle and short-shift through the gears are what make the V-twin such a pleasure to ride. Harley, Indian, and the Japanese and Italian bike makers have offered wonderful V-twin cruisers. For me, a cruiser without a V-twin is like a Duesenberg SJ or a Jaguar XK with a Chevy crate engine. Just my 2 cents.

I would pay through the nose to get longer suspention on it and a taller traditional spring seat ..As a note to BMW I would love to see this styling on a simple R80 with real world suspention under used motor 55 Hp and 55 torque a mordern Earles fork single sport rear spring 200 mile tank of regular gas ..the /2 and /5 s were so beautiful and with modern brakes could take on the heritage market in a way that the R9T family have missed .... There are or have been a lot of Japanese bikes trying to copy a Harley Davidson cruisers. ANsd some of them good looking. This one is not a very good try. They know. So they refer to their own heritage. But even then the HD's looked better.

@@HooMeye I think this looks fabulous! I have a Harley but remain neutral with my objectivity

    Great neutral review, thanx.
I would also put the big block 1400 Guzzis in this category, my personal favourite.
