I cry every time I listen to George's music. There was just something about it that made you feel that everything was gonna be okay. I was introduced to him when I was a music student at Howard University in the mid-70s, and I haven't stopped listening 'til this day. That was such a beautiful era of musical geniuses. We'll probably never witness anything like that again in our lifetime. Rest In Peace Sir Duke.
I had an incredible experience jamming on stage with George at Chastain Park in Atlanta. He called me up from the audience after asking for volunteers in his "audience participation" part of his show. My friend stood up behind me and pointed down at me and then George called out to me. I went up he introduced me and I played on Reach for It. On the stage at the same time were Jonathan Butler, Rachelle Farelle and Gerald Albright along with the finest rhythm section I have ever played with. It was really the highlight of my career, as I looked up from the grand piano, during my solo and seeing George nodding, Rachelle nodding, Jonathan laughing, Gerald smiling…….at me, and my playing………how could I have been so fortunate to bask in their aura as Dianne says above, to shared a few minutes of joy. Incredible joy and fun. And the highlight of all, we finished the tune and I got up to leave. And George said "no, you stay, you're GOOD!" And so I stayed and played a bit more with some other volunteers as they made their way up on other tunes, and then I left. What an honor. that will likely never happen again and so I am thankful for George, and do miss him and the energy and joy he brought to this world.
... damn, so lucky you are!! I wish I could have a jam with him too. But on the other hand I had the privilege to interview him twice. He took his time and we've talked about nearly everything. A great experience !!
