We wrote Might As Well Be Gold as a reminder of what we have in the midst of what we have lost... there is so much to be thankful for even in the darkest hour, finding gratitude every day keeps the depression at bay and gives us a sense of hope and purpose. It's part of our mental health improvement program over Covid. It's one of those things that we will carry forward as we exit this space and continually adjust to new situations.
Sav: We have some incredible sponsors and core supporters that have carried us through several crazy tours, kept us fed, and put gas in the tank. The lengths people will go to help us survive never ceases to amaze us. Deciding to build a studio in the attic and finish the Vessel album on our own was in no little part due to that support. Later the creation of the TIME OUT EP in the middle of pandemic crisis was nothing short of a life-saver for us. It's the relationships that keep us grounded and moving forward.
Katie: While we were debating the possibilities over dinner our first week home, we started designing the studio on paper. Our sponsors at Shure and Roland Boss sent us everything we needed to make it happen, and our patrons paid the rent and kept the electric on. We started to see the gift of time...time to get the album we had always wanted. Studio time was not something we had much of. It’s expensive, and with every day off the road, we were losing income - so prior to Covid, we recorded most of our music at the pace of a day and a half per song. Coming off of the road and having more time made us wonder: What if we had a whole week to work on a tune?
Sav: We started to realize that this time might be a blessing. If you step back and look at almost any situation, you can usually find something to be thankful for. We had each other, and we had time. That was the catalyst to recording the song we had written with Maia Sharp before COVID, called Might As Well Be Gold. Maia is one of the easiest people to write with, she has great hooks for days. Might As Well Be Gold was the song that really kept us grounded. It’s about finding gratitude when things aren’t ideal. We recorded this one several times, several ways. Eventually Michael said, let’s try something completely different. We all loved the direction he took the song in, so he produced this one.

It is indeed an electric cello that Katie is playing, Sam. And Sav also plays an electric violin. They play about 12 different instruments between the two of them. They are truly a remarkable band. I have been a fan for years, and I am still a bit dumbfounded as to why they are not more widely appreciated....But this newest EP release (Time out Vol. 1) is really, really strong and it just might be the recording that brings them more well-deserved popularity. A lot of indie music journals and radio stations getting hip to this EP, and the first single (Wildfire) has been getting a lot of spins. Solid recording top to bottom!!! Also check out Odyssey, and the soon to be released Vessel (Oct 2021). Brilliant musicians/songwriters, and super beautiful human beings!!
