    • @RankupAviation

      I personally think it could be to do with safety and keeping in mind the amount of fuel left and how many flights are in the holding pattern. Although there is no specific figure like 1 or 2 tries but on Sunday most flights that did 2 attempts were sent to other nearby airports like Birmingham and London Stansted. Heathrow sky is really busy in general and if just few had to go around just imagine the strain in the Atc

    I'm enjoying this edit version - but I'm not familiar with the planes - I'm not really much of a plane spotter, ( though even I recognise the A380). If possible, could you name the planes? I realise that the skill of the pilot is all important, but I'm curious which plane lands more smoothly - the Boeing or the Airbus.

      Good catch! The ATR likely had one set of spoilers out because of the strong crosswinds. Pilots use this technique to help control the plane during windy landings, especially when the wind is pushing from one side.

    Why, oh why do people think the pilots are pulling off these landings by some extraordinary luck?
    Pilots train endlessly for ALL weather conditions, and these are NOT any surprise conditions….it’s just a fully expected part of their job.
    They don’t (and wouldn’t) make these landings by chance, or as a result of any special ‘skill’.
    I’m not for one minute saying it’s easy, or that I could do it, but I do wish people would stop back-patting something that is quite normal.

    • @RankupAviation
      @RankupAviation  Месяц назад

      while you’re right that pilots train extensively for these situations, calling crosswind landings ‘quite normal’ overlooks the complexity involved.
      Crosswind landings require precise control inputs to counteract the wind-pilots use techniques like the crab method or a sideslip to maintain runway alignment. This is further complicated when wind gusts are unpredictable, as they often are during storms like Storm Bert.
      Yes, pilots are trained for this, but training doesn’t make it easy-it makes it possible. The fact that they land safely, often under extreme conditions, deserves recognition.
