Great suggestions for how to get the most out of your vanilla beans! I make my own vanilla extract and I usually just slice the bean and put the whole thing in the jar, seeds and all, but I LOVE that you're getting multiple uses!!! I definitely will be adopting this method! Thank you so much for sharing!
Right now I have a Mother jar and 2 pint jars soaking. Some sugar and now salt thanks to you!! Still want to make paste. Love your guidance in this Vanilla bean journey, Thank you!!
That means so much to me! Thank you so much for letting me know! I should also let you know that I recorded another (third) vanilla paste video yesterday. I will make another video where I compare all three as well.
I love the idea of adding vanilla powder to a monk fruit (or mini fruit / erythritol) sweetener! So many people these days using monk fruit, just imagine how useful that could be as a gift to your friend on a low carb diet! ❤
@@Rebecca.RobbinsI am, too! I've got to tell you something. My biological mother's name was Rebecca, and she named me Robin! It floored me when I saw your name!
Thanks Lisa! ❤️ I saw that my new batch of beans shipped! I’m planning to record my most epic Vanilla video EVER once they get here!!!! I’m super excited!
When you pour out the liquid from the mother jar, you add more alcohol but how long can you leave the original vanilla beans in the mother jar. Did I miss that explanation? Thank you for sharing.❤
Love your videos! I started a couple of small containers of vanilla a couple of years ago and love using my own homemade vanilla. After watching your videos I want to try starting the mother jar. My question is can you mix the variety of beans? I have some Madagascar beans and just ordered some tahitian beans could I use both in the mother jar?
Thank you! Yes, you can absolutely mix up your vanilla beans! Even if they initially soaked in different types of alcohol. That’s the beauty of a mother jar! No two are alike!
After you add more liquid, do you have to wait a certain amount of time for the new liquid to emulsify or can you use it right away? I recently did way too many pods in too small of a container... i just ordered the big jars but not sure if i have to wait when i add more liquid.
I go by taste. My mother jar rarely gets used because I have a lot of other bottles of extract. I think typically you would leave it for a few years before using.
Good morning I've ben re rewatching your vanilla videos love them. I have a beginners question. Once i/ you powder the ooold (2x used, sitting in the bottom of mother jar old) can/should I put the powder back in to extract or mother jar to dissolve? Wil it dissolve? Ty
After topping off the mother jar, how long do you have to wait before you can use it again? How much do you decant from the mother jar at one time, like we should always leave more than half the original extract in the mother jar?
I think Mother jars become a lot less science and a lot more art. You need to use your own senses to decide when the extract is ready to use. I don’t think the resulting extract would be something I would sell, but once you have extracted vanilla a few times you should get a pretty good feel for when the extract is ready.
a o 0 seconds ago I am new to extracting as a hobby ..a few years ago I did an extraction which I’m still using .it is better than store bought but in a short time I have learned so much and hoping to bring my vanilla to a whole new level .. Thanks to what I’ve learned fromThe Indri Vanilla group co-op and your channel .. I have quite a few new extractions going and recently made the paste (which turned out amazing ) so Thank you ! This mother jar still confuses me a bit … Would you wait till the extractions are complete to start the mother jar with those beans or would use a few beans each time you start a new extraction to start the mother jar now ?
Thank you! You can do it either way. There are no rules! If I were starting from “scratch” I would start by decanting about half of an extraction that you already have on the go (once it’s finished) and add more beans and alcohol to that.
That I do not know! I don’t drink alcohol that hasn’t been turned into vanilla extract, so I’m not sure! I try different brands and haven’t found a bad one yet.
You would really need to know how much your brand weigh. You want one cup of vodka per one oz of beans. I would GUESS that your beans are maybe a couple of ounces, but that is a wild guess.
As someone who has studied, researched, and made vanilla extract for nearly 20 years, and who has a Bachelor's degree in Horticulture (yes, it's relevant here), AND is a professional pastry chef and chocolatier, I can tell you that a "mother jar" is a complete waste of time. If you are putting used vanilla beans in there, the ONLY flavor they have left is the little bit of vanilla extract that the beans have soaked up during the extraction process. Thus, you are missing out on the full potential of the beans, and anything you get from a "mother jar" is going to be inferior to a regular extract. Just throw your used vanilla beans out and buy new ones, folks. Fresh beans are superior to used beans. You're literally wasting your time using spent beans in anything. Take it from someone who really knows.
Ok so they're less superior and? Instead of throwing them away I'd rather use it to make some cookies for my kids or whatever quick dessert I want to whip up. Not everyone makes fancy 5 star desserts. Sheesh! I'm a frugal person on a budget with 3 kids. I'm pretty sure my kids won't notice the vanilla in the cookies being subpar. I'd rather get as much as I can out of everything I buy then to throw it out. I'm sure with the prices now days many would agree with me. My grandma did the same thing with her vanilla beans. Back in the day ppl knew how to get the most out of everything and worked with what they had. Shocker right? Not everything has to win a baking contest. My goodness you sounded so arrogant in your delivery smh.
If a mother jar is such a complete waste of time then why do so many people do it? I’d have to believe the quality is superior to that of anything you would find in a store. Good enough for me.
Vanilla is so expensive but worth it. I love using every single gram of the pod. Thank you!
💯
What wonderful ideas because they are not cheap.
as silly as it probably sounds, making vanilla extract etc brings me a lot of joy!

People leave them there for long long periods of time. I’ve heard of as long as 30+ years.

It will not dissolve. I would add that to a little salt and use it for when you are baking and need salt.

@@Rebecca.Robbins so just to be clear, you out your used beans into a large jar and top them off with vodka correct?
What is the best vodka?
That I do not know! I don’t drink alcohol that hasn’t been turned into vanilla extract, so I’m not sure! I try different brands and haven’t found a bad one yet.
How many cups of vodka would it take for 25 vanilla beans?
